Pescaglia House Rental Photos and Description

1 hour Pisa airport. -1 mile to village with restaurant and shops. 20 mins Lucca

San Giuseppe is semi-detached, (it was originally a farmhouse) the other half is also a private holiday home, not let. We have separate drives, gardens and entrances. The house walls are stone and very thick: keeps cool even on hottest days. There are two terraces and a large flat garden, private pool, privacy-fenced and gated - very secure for children. Parents can relax because of the above-ground swimming pool, out of bounds when you want it to be. The views are across and along the wooded valley, adjoining the Garfagnana National Park. The property is not over-looked by any others and is completely private: peaceful and romantic. Because it is not near a city the night sky is amazing. Watch the fire-flies dance across the garden!

The key feature of the property is the outstanding natural beauty surrounding it and the large, private gardens to relax and play. It is secluded but not too remote, there are houses dotted all around the hillside, and a blacksmith further along the lane

Famous blacksmith: Just 100 meters along the lane beyond our house is a famous blacksmith.

Carlo Galgani, last member of a long line of blacksmiths of Lucca, forges steel by hand with the help of the mighty 'hammer', moved by the cascading water, properly channeled from the nearby stream Pedogna. Water also powers the generator for lighting and other machinery. The rush of air caused by cascading water is used as bellows for the furnace.

He is one of only two traditional blacksmiths using water power remaining in Italy.

He normally works on week day mornings and welcomes visitors. He sells his high quality knives, kitchen and garden tools, etc. (He is more interested in demonstrating than selling things).

Type his name into Google to see videos on You Tube.

Fun way to see Lucca: Bicycles are for hire at the Porta S. Maria gate in Lucca. You can safely ride around the walls, no cars allowed, and get great views of the town. They also have family 'bikes' for 3 or 4 and adult bikes with attached kiddy-bike behind.

It takes around 35 minutes at a leisurely pace. Cost for a family 'bike' and adult bike with trailor 18 euros (1 hour).

Guestbook comments from the owner

The property offers tranquility for those seeking rest and relaxation. There is a large garden and a lovely fresh spring water pool which our children enjoyed immensely. The villa provides a combination of rustic charm with excellent facilities including a modern kitchen and bathrooms.

The location of the property is ideal for exploring the mountains and is within easy reach of the Italian coastline and the wonderful cities of Lucca, Pisa and Florence. There are excellent, good value restaurants very close by.

Tranquil retreat in the hills

  • 5 of 5

We stayed here with 4 children and a grandparent. We had no problems following the directions sent by the owner Christine. We have visited once before, but drove from the airport in the dark this time. It really is a beautiful place with beautiful wooded hillsides and a stream at the bottom of the road. It was very hot whilst we were there and even when we couldn't face a sightseeing day, there was somewhere cool in the garden to read and relax after a dip in the pool. The butterflies flitting in and out of the lavender bushes are mesmerising. The children enjoyed the pool and having plenty of space to run around.

The house itself is very well maintained and appointed. It was absolutely spotless when we arrived. The kitchen has everything you could need, and we really valued the extra shower room downstairs especially after a swim. We had a couple of goes with the pizza oven which was fun.

The location is ideal for sightseeing, there is a railway station in a nearby village with a route along the Garfagna Valley and to the cities, and we drove to Lucca and Pisa for days out. The local towns and villages are well worth a look too, there are some great little shops for local cheeses, bread and salami etc as well as supermarkets.

The blacksmith who lives next door is very friendly and welcomes visitors. He is the last remaining craftsman in the area of his kind and uses a water wheel to drive his tools. He sells fantastic kitchen knives, coal shovels, mezzalunas etc. We also visited the local restaurant in the village, La Fonte. We went twice and had wonderful and fairly priced meals both times, much better than in the tourist traps in the cities. We think their pizzas are the best we have had in Tuscany and the the local trout they served was divine. We walked back from the restaurant which took about half an hour under a fantastic clear and starry sky.

Look out for the local wildlife too, my children saw a porcupine crossing the road, fireflies and a family of wild boar.

I can't think of anything bad to say about this property, we had a lovely holiday.

Owner's Response: It's rewarding to hear that returning guests enjoy our property so much and feel 'at home'. We have had quite a few returning guests: there is so much to do and see in this area, you really never run out of new places to visit.

Stunning villa for a family holiday

  • 5 of 5

Upon arrival myself and my family were blown away by the stunning surroundings the villa is set in. The privacy and quiet location makes for the perfect relaxing family holiday.

The information given to us by the owner was great and well explained and as a result we had no problems with anything during our stay.

The garden is very spacious and well kept as was the pool. The top patio has plenty of space for lovely family meals as well as offering shade for the little ones. We had lots of fun making pizzas and cooking them in the amazing outdoor pizza oven.

Inside the villa there is lots of space and everything you could possibly need. The bedrooms are a good size and even on the hottest days they stay cool with the help of the shutters.

We found a lovely restaurant in the village and the supermarket and other shops in the area were all easy enough to get to.

All in all we had a fantastic holiday and will defiantly be revisiting villa San Giuseppe again.

Owner's Response: Another happy family - great to know that people enjoy the house and area as much as we do.

Absolutely Bliss. Gorgeous Villa and surroundings.

  • 5 of 5

Upon arriving at San Giuseppe, we were immediately taken aback at how beautiful the villa is and its surroundings. It's private, quiet, a natural suntrap and the villa itself is just beautiful, with all the amenities we needed. We had just one week there but wished we had booked two! One of the highlights for me was being able to use the outside stone oven for making pizzas and then enjoying them whilst sitting on the patio in the sun. We had 4 adults and 2 kids in our party and because of the size of the villa, we had no problems fitting everybody in. The pool is ideal for dipping into when you get too hot (temperatures were a fantastic 30C+) or alternatively you can sit in the shade under the tree, ideal for reading because it’s so quiet.

We also tried a couple of the local restaurants, both reasonably priced and the food was fantastic. We had a car so we were also able to pop to the supermarkets nearby and we also took trips to Pisa and Lucca.

All in all, it was one of the best holidays I’ve had and I put it down to being able to relax at this beautiful villa. We’ve stayed in a few villas over the years, but I have to say that San Giuseppe is right up there for price, privacy, amenities and that ‘Home from Home’ feel. We’ve already decided we’ll be going back.

Idyllic retreat - lots to do if you want to

  • 5 of 5

We chose Tuscany as a destination as we chose to get married in Lucca's Palazzo Orsetti. My now wife and I had never been to Tuscany before so it was a risk as to whether it was the place for us. We needn't have worried it was just what we had hoped for.

The location of the villa is set in a woodland valley with the city of Lucca 30 minutes drive to the south. Peace and quiet are served in large portions at the villa. As soon as we arrived we felt the laid back and relaxed nature of the setting. In fact, the whole region had the same feel. We had laid out plans to visit Pisa and Florence during our stay, neither came to fruition as we were far too busy doing nothing much at all.

The few times we did leave the villa, were for groceries at the nearby supermarket, meals out in the evening and of course our wedding in Lucca.

On our first night we tried the recommended La Fonte restaurant. Neither of us had a great experience, I actually had 2 hairs in my meal, but being British I displayed our stereotypical stiff upper lip. Instead we drove another mile down the road to Molino de la Volpe, where the food was most excellent and the service was outstanding enough for me to tip, and I rarely tip hehe.

Renting a car is essential, as it is way off the beaten track but not too far that it is a chore to travel to. I thoroughly enjoyed the winding road up and over the mountain on our return journey to Pisa airport although the wife was less keen :)

The villa itself was imbued with rustic charm. There was way more space than 2 people needed. The kitchen was well equipped and everywhere was very clean and safe.

The grounds were laid out as 3 terraces. The upper terrace was paved with a wooden table and chairs with parasol. The main entrance, barbecue and pizza oven were also on this level.

The middle terrace had a paved area with a plastic table and chairs with parasol. At dusk, most evenings we spent our time here as there seemed to be less bugs flying into you than the upper terrace. Also on this level was the utility room with adjoining wet room.

The lower terrace was where the garden and pool area was. The pool was a lot larger than we perceived from the photos and was a welcome retreat from the hot sun, even in early Sept we hit over 30 degrees.

To close, I'd like to commend the owner Christine, the information pack she emailed us before the trip was very comprehensive and helped us out a lot.

We are already talking of coming back here!

Owner's Response: It's rewarding when guests make the effort to write a review, we appreciate it, thank you. We get lots of good feed-back but so few bother to do this. September is a lovely time of the year in our area, not too hot normally. I must point out that there is a good, gently rising main road to the house as well as the scenic mountain road. Good to hear that we and our agent are still keeping guests happy.

A lovely, secluded property

  • 5 of 5

We stayed here in June 2010 and were delighted with the property. It combines rustic character with all mod cons.

The location is secluded and private, but is easily accessible along a country lane 3km from the nearest village. Although the road is surfaced, there's very little passing traffic making it a quiet getaway.

The house was lovely and cool, even when the temperature outside was in the mid-thirties, thanks to its thick stone walls. The lounge and bedrooms are comfortable and homely and the kitchen has everything you need to cook for yourself. There's a small shower room with everything you need upstairs and a wet room in the cellar at garden-level - handy for the pool. Everything was immaculately clean for our arrival. There was just two of us, but the house would have had plenty of space for more.

We enjoyed the outdoor space - the decking overlooking the pool is a real sun-spot, but there was always plenty of shade as well when it got too hot. Like the house, the pool was clean and was surprisingly big - it was lovely to soak in fresh spring water without the smell of chlorine.

We loved sitting out on the top patio in the evenings after the sun had gone dark watching the dozens of fireflies in the garden.

The nearest village - Trebbio - has a fantastic restaurant and a small shop, though we tended to pick up groceries at one of the larger supermarkets within a 10-15 minute drive.

Lucca is easily reached by car, and the small towns of Barga and Bagni di Lucca are a short drive up the valley and well worth a visit. We also visited and enjoyed Pisa (1 hr away by car) and Florence (90 mins by train from Lucca station).

All in all, a lovely place to get away from it all. We wouldn't hesitate to recommend it to friends. Your only dilemma will be whether to go off sightseeing, or to spend the day in the pool!

Owner's Response: The pool is maintained and cleaned by the company who built it. It really is a delight not to have chlorinated water (they use oxygen for cleaning). Their professionalism shows, it is always crystal clear. Our domestic cleaners are great: we never question the hours they take to perpare the house to the highest standard. It's good to hear that guests appreciate their efforts.

Wonderful family visit

  • 5 of 5

The six of us (Grandma, daughter, son, daughter and her husband, and grandson - all adults) had a wonderful stay at your villa this fall. It was our first trip to Italy, and we thoroughly enjoyed our adventure.

Your home is very charming, comfortable, and easy to reach, thanks to your excellent directions. The location is ideal for those who want to get away from it all, yet be close enough to the cities to do some sightseeing if desired.

Thank you for being so flexible and accommodating our schedule. You are wonderful to work with and made our first visit to Tuscany very memorable. Thank you for sharing your lovely home with us. (November 2009)

In the hills about 20 minutes drive north-west of Lucca, between Diecimo (near Borgo a Mozzano) and Pescaglia. A good, gently rising road, NOT a mountain road to this point. The property is off the main road along a virtually level tarmac woodland road, very quiet, a mile from the village of PIEGAIO where there is a very good restaurant (torch needed if walking, no street lights) basic grocery shop, pharmacy and post office.

Railway station in Diecimo (10 minutes) with good links to Lucca and Pisa; a bank, petrol station, restaurants and shops. Borgo a Mozzano is the nearest town, 15 minutes drive, with all amenities and the historic Devil’s Bridge. The coast is a scenic 45 minute drive. The Garfagnana Park is very close.

Getting to the house is easy: from Pisa airport you join the motorway directly from the airport and exit at Lucca, follow the main route through Lucca and along the valley to Diecimo, then 10 minutes into the hills. It takes 60 - 90 minutes, depending on traffic

Other Activities: Skiing at Abetone, a 1 hour drive

Golf: The nearest 18-hole golf course is about 45 minutes drive:

Versilia Golf Club -

Via della Sipe, Pietrasanta -
