Overview

Richmond Chateau / Country House Rental Photos and Description

Beautiful, spacious house with 4 bedrooms, gorgeous gardens + luxury barn

Luxurious living, steeped in history: Dating from 1820 and fully renovated in 2000 and 2012, the Coach House and the Dairy Cottage were originally part of Stanwick Hall, the home of the Duchess of Northumberland. The Coach House and Dairy Cottage both enjoy great privacy and their own gardens, but can also be combined to form elegant and spacious accommodation for up to 13 guests in great comfort.

Details for the Coach House

This luxurious Yorkshire Dales country house has 4 comfortable bedrooms, a large, well-equipped kitchen with Aga, spacious lounge with log burner leading into a beautiful conservatory overlooking south-facing, private gardens. Please click on the link below for more details.

Details for the Dairy Cottage

Converted in 2012, this architect-designed delightful hideaway is all on one level and has its own large garden. The large living area (8m x 5m) is open-plan, with a dining area at one end and a well equipped kitchen leading off. There is a lovely log burner, a large roof atrium and wide arched glass doors leading into the gardens. Leading off the lounge is a spacious bedroom, again with hand-made double arched glass doors opening onto private south-facing gardens.Dairy Cottage is flooded with light whatever the weather and the use high quality natural materials throughout - oak floors and hand-made doors, Jerusalem stone in the shower room and a solid wood kitchen - create a calm and peaceful environment for relaxation.

Environmental sustainability was important to us when we designed this conversion, as was the need to stay true to the original building and re-use as much of the original stone and other materials as possible, so the Dairy Cottage has underfloor heating supplied by a wood-pellet boiler to keep it cozy and warm in the winter months.

Further details about the Coach House

Approached through the tall sandstone gate piers and into a spacious driveway the stunning architecture of the Coach House will make your stay a special one, whether you are entertaining in the cozy dining room, cooking on the Aga with friends in the roomy kitchen, sitting by the fire in the spacious lounge or simply relaxing with a good read in the light and airy conservatory or mezzanine. Children love this place - they can explore and play safely to their hearts' content whilst parents can relax and enjoy this rather special Grade II listed home with all the modern conveniences. The house has a wing with 2 double bedrooms, a triple room and a bathroom with a walk-in shower which means that 2 families can enjoy complete privacy. The spacious master suite is the only bedroom on the first floor. It has French doors opening onto a Juliet balcony with private, uninterrupted south-facing views over beautiful parkland , a Super King bed and ensuite shower room. Also on the first floor is a large mezzanine for lounging and browsing through the house library of books and games.

In the East wing of the Coach House there is a very large kitchen, with a breakfast table that seats 8 people, all the modern appliances you might need, and a French door opening onto a sun-trap with outdoor seating overlooking the south-facing gardens and parkland beyond. There is a beautiful dining room that seats 8 in comfort and this has a lovely wood-burning stove to provide a cozy ambiance for your entertaining. The spacious lounge has bi-fold glass doors that open into the large conservatory, providing a 34’x18’ living area. There is also a very large utility room for all your outdoor gear, an additional fridge-freezer and washing and drying facilities. In all there are over 3000 sq ft of living area, so there is plenty of room for everyone to find a quiet corner as well as 4 spacious reception rooms to socialise in. There is everything you need at the Coach House – it’s a real home from home.

Decorated to a high standard, with hardwood flooring and 300 year old stone pillars in the impressive entrance hall, the Coach House is stylishly furnished and very well equipped. You will enjoy fast broadband Internet access; high quality Hi-Fi in the lounge for music lovers; very well equipped kitchen with a 5 burner gas hob in addition to the Aga, NEFF combination microwave and electric fan oven, juicer, bread maker, ice cream maker, 2 fridges, dishwasher, quality stereo and beautiful garden views. There is a range of garden furniture and large barbecue. Parking for up to 5 cars. Walled gardens and electric gates give total privacy.

Things to see and do: The Coach House is situated in peaceful, rolling countryside between the River Swale and the Tees, on the ancient site of the 2000 year old Brigantes settlement. Children love exploring the Coach House and its gardens, playing table tennis or playing on their bikes on the private roads. There is an abundance of historical monuments within 20 minutes' drive - castles, abbeys, earthworks, villages and towns to name but a few. Walkers will love the Yorkshire Dales, England's largest and most impressive National Park is just 15 minutes' drive away and the Lake District is just over an hour's drive with sailing, hiking, wind surfing and much more. Enjoy horse riding from the nearby stables (you can walk there!) on the perfect network of bridleways or play a round of golf at the nearby course at Richmond in the middle of beautiful countryside. Going slightly further afield, explore the stunning North Yorkshire coastline and enjoy the delights of Whitby, just over an hour's drive away.

Guestbook comments from the owner

This countryside property was exactly as described, if not better. As we arrived, we were greeted by a lovely man who showed us around and gave us some background information on the property and the surrounding area. The house was spotless and furnished immaculately, which to us, was extremely impressive. A lovely, bright, spacious living room for the group to relax in (could have done with one more sofa), adjoined to a sweet conservatory, which when the doors are opened is breezy, warm and snug. The grounds are lovely, we enjoyed a bbq and table tennis, and just lounging outside looking at the beautiful plants and flowers the garden held. The kitchen was the highlight - all the equipment and utensils one could ask for, with a large window overlooking the garden, making the washing up seem a much less arduous task. The owner was particularly friendly, helping us with walks and tips for the surrounding area.

Overall, I would recommend this property wholeheartedly and I would go back in a heartbeat, especially as it is EXCELLENT value for money. A wonderful holiday, made even more enjoyable by the smooth running of business, no problems whatsoever.

Wonderful House and Cottage

  • 5 of 5
Enjoyed a family birthday weekend for 10 of us in this beautiful house and cottage in a wonderful location - very quiet but relaxing. Its in an area steeped in history and the house is very much part of that. Lovely size and the beds were very comfortable. We enjoyed cooking for 10 as it had all the facilities we needed. Garden was a treat and peaceful to sit in and enjoy the views across the fields - feeding the horses with the spare carrots! We would love to return and didn't want to leave.

A week of idyllic living!

  • 5 of 5
It is extremely rare in our experience as world travellers that we stumble upon the perfect holiday house, such as we discovered at the Coach House. Simon was the perfect host: gracious, helpful yet unintrusive, quick to make sure our needs were being met and to offer suggestions for places to visit or eat. We were certainly not the perfect guests: stressed out from the drive from Aberdeen with a baby who had suddenly decided she did not like road trips, and a grieving, recently divorced relative in tow. The Coach House supplied us with rest, room to relax and unwind in the late June sunshine, and provided the perfect launching point for exploring the beautiful Yorkshire countryside.

The Coach House has four bedrooms: three close together on the main floor with a large bathroom, and an enormous master bedroom with ensuite and balcony on the first floor. Our family of four spread out amongst the three bedrooms, allowing the baby to catch up on her naps in peace, our elder daughter to play in her own room, and exhausted parents to read/nap/rest in their own room. The visiting relative took the master bedroom, allowing each family a great deal of privacy, peace and quiet. The kitchen was very well appointed (even with glass pitchers for Pimm's to be carried out and consumed al fresco in the garden, and common kitchen herbs - mint! - just outside the door). There was also laundry, a full dining room, very large living room with plush couches and entertainment system, sunroom, large entryway and first-floor landing complete with bins of children's books and toys. Despite these amenities, we probably spent the majority of our time in the garden, soaking up the sunshine, napping on picnic blankets and chasing small children who adored the incredible flowers, humming bees, and the horses and farm dogs that made the occasional appearance at the back gate. Walks into the surrounding countryside were met with bucolic scenery, friendly neighbours who waved as you passed, and the sort of fresh air that restores a city-dwelling soul.

Recommended things to do/visit in the area: Richmond and its medieval castle, Whitby and adjacent abbey, the chapel of St. John within walking distance of the Coach House, the Stanwick Arms pub in the charming village of Aldbrough St. John overlooking the large village green, and eating five star food at The Oak Tree Inn at Hutton Magna.

Thanks to Simon for an idyllic week. We hope to return!

Beautiful property in lovely surroundings

  • 5 of 5
Great place to stay with family and friends. The coach house is very spacious and has everything you need for a holiday with children. The ice cream maker and outdoor ping pong were a hit with our youngsters. The log burner and large dining area were great to enjoy a lovely winter evening meal together. The beds were comfortable and the furniture and equipment was of good quality. We went on a nice walk down by the stream and had a trip in to Darlington and then over to York on another day we did not venture out much in the area as we didn't want to walk long distances as it was too cold and we had a couple of very young children. We will definitely rent this house out again if we plan to have a break away with friends again. Thank you for great communications and a pleasant welcome when we arrived, we loved hearing about the history of the building.
For other guests....
We ordered a food order from Asda to arrive on our first night which was a great convenience to us however the driver got lost so best to put down a few directions should you wish to do this as our order very nearly got returned as although I had put the landline number down the driver was trying to contact my mobile and there is no signal in the house.

lovely place to stay

  • 5 of 5
I can highly recommend a stay at the Coach House. We had a family break there to celebrate my mother's 80th. It is simlpy a lovely place for a gathering. We enjoyed a trip to Richmond and a great walk on the Sunday in the surrounding countryside. The kitchen is well kitted out and we ordered in from Tescos as the instructions suggest. All in all a very successful long weekend and the family is talking about going back in the summer.
