The Dairy is a pretty cosy two bedroom upstairs apartment adjacent to Sandbrook House, a handsome period country house set in 25 acres of parkland, close to the Carlow/Wicklow border. Surrounded by lush green lands and gardens, and accessed through a small courtyard, The Dairy is a comfortable and private place to stay, warm and with plenty of character. The perfect base camp from which to explore the beautiful gardens and countryside of Carlow, the wonderful walks of Wicklow, the fascinating culture and history of the medieval city of Kilkenny and the coastal town of Wexford with its famous Opera Festival, The Dairy is tucked away in the heart of the countryside.There is also a stable yard with some friendly horses close by. The house manager at Sandbrook House, can provide goodies to purchase from the house, including a home-made selection of breads, jams, chutneys, and delicious olive oil from Sandbrooks sister properties in Tuscany ! With notice, she will prepare pies, etc.
Bright and welcoming, The Dairy has a large living room, with pine and wicker furniture, pretty floral fabrics and cushions, TV & DVD, an open fire, and a modern, well - equipped kitchen, shared laundry room and freezer. There are two bedrooms, one pleasant twin with two comfortable beds, a chest and hanging for clothes, one bright double, with an antique chest of drawers, bedside lockers and wardrobe. There are also electric blankets, as an extra bedtime treat for cooler evenings ! There is oil fired central heating and an open cast-iron fire, so The Dairy is always snug and cosy in winter or on chilly days The local village Ballon is a brisk 2.7 km walk along country roads, which has a variety of amenities including some characterful pubs, two garages, one 24 hour, a lovely greengrocers/mini market, butchers, as well as the Forge, a great spot for some lunch or home-made treats. Sha-Roe Bistro in Clonegal village, is just a 10 minutes drive from The Dairy, is well worth a visit
The closest large supermarkets are in Tullow, less than 7 km away, where there are chemists, newsagents, garages, beauty salons, hairdressers and gift shops. There are some good restaurants and bars here too, including Mount Wolseley, the hotel and golf resort just outside the town, which has good food in the restaurant and bar. Rathwood home & award-winning garden centre, is just a short drive away, and has something for everyone, from interiors, garden, cafe, fashion, falconery, train ride and forest walks. The famous Altamont gardens are just 2 km from the Dairy, with beautiful walks by the river, picnic area and plant sales. The Dairy is 20 minutes from Carlow town, which has a fantastic contemporary art centre, Visual, and the George Benard Shaw theatre, with a fine restaurant, Lennons, all under the same roof and with a splendid views of Carlow Cathedral from huge windows. Carlow has plenty of choices for eating out, from bars to bistros, Italian to Indian.
Less than 15 minutes drive from the Dairy is Bunclody, a charming village with an excellent golf course, and plenty of shops, bars and restaurants. For fishing enthusiasts the river Slaney, Barrow and Suir are within easy distance with guides readily available. Horse riding on The Munny Trail is close by, for those bringing their own horses. Mount Leinster, Lugnaquilla, the south Way and the Wicklow Mountain National Park are on the doorstep for hill-walkers, while gardeners will love Altamont House and Gardens, one of Ireland's finest gardens and parkland, just five minutes away.
