Town and Area: The Franschhoek valley, originally called Olifantshoek ('Elephants' corner'), was first settled in 1688 by 176 French Hugenot refugees (the name was later changed to le Coin Français - 'the French Corner' and then Franschhoek - Afrikaans for 'French Corner'). Many of the French settlers named their new farms after the areas in France from which they came (e.g. La Motte, La Cotte, Cabrière, Provence, Chamonix and Dieu Donné). Today these farms are renowned wimeries. Once a sleepy country retreat, the village began experiencing a boom since the 1990s. The ideal summer weather, snowy peaks in winter and proximity to Cape Town have turned Franschhoek into one of South Africa's most sought after tourist destinations. In the village you will find wonderful crafts, art and antique shops and galleries. The main street is lined with coffee shops and restaurants. Only 45 minutes from Cape Town, Franschhoek is the ideal base to explore the entire Cape wine lands.
Attraction Highlights: Franschhoek is one of the most beautiful wine valleys in the world.
It is considered to be the food capital of South Africa (the highest concentration of award-winning restaurants in South Africa).
It is part of the best wine region (Cape wine lands) in South Africa (with a French heritage of more than 300 years and more than 40 extraordinary wine cellars).
Franschhoek is a town for all budgets with many outdoor activities to enjoy (horse-riding, cycling, hiking, golf, para-gliding and trout fishing to name a few)
