The LUBERON and Alpes de Haute Provence: The Luberon region of Provence lies between the Alps to the north and the plains of Vaucluse to the south. Brought to life for many in the books of Peter Mayle, the 'Petit Luberon' , to the west is separated from the 'Grand Luberon' to the east by the beautiful Combe de Loumarin, between Bonnieux and Loumarin. The village of Saint Saturnin d'Apt is very close to the picturesque Luberon 'coup de coeur' villages of Menerbes and Lacoste, the spectacular village of Gordes and the 'ochre' village of Roussillon. The attractions of the Alpes de Haute Provence department to the north including Banon, Manosque, Forcalquier, the Gorges de Verdon and the 'sub-alpes' offer a more rugged contrast to the Luberon. Whether your perfect holiday is relaxing by the pool, dining out in amazing restaurants, exploring the excellent wines of the Luberon or Cotes du Rhone regions, walking, hiking, or a host of other activities, villa La Musardiere and Saint Saturnin les Apt will not disappoint.

WIDER PROVENCE: For the more restless holidaymaker, the cities of AVIGNON (Palais des Papes, Pont St, Benezet, great restuarants), and AIX EN PROVENCE (historical city of art and culture) and ORANGE (Roman amphitheatre) are all charming historical gems well worthy of discovery, as are other towns including VAISON LA ROMAINE (Dentelles of Montmirail), SAULT (lavender) and St. REMY de PROVENCE (the Alpilles). More strenuous trips can be planned to visit MARSEILLES, the famous and ever popular Mediterranean coast including ST. TROPEZ , CANNES, ANTIBES and NICE.

About Anne and Duncan Macrae

La Musardiere is our family home. Anne and I work in London U.K. but spend most of our free time at the Saint Saturnin house, which our family also visit regularly too. We rent out the house for relatively few weeks per year, interspersing rentals with family visits giving the house a genuine 'loved and lived in' feel.

Anne and Duncan Macrae purchased this villa in 2010

Well equipped property with lovely views

  • 5 of 5

Well equipped property with lovely pool which had steps down into it so suited both our young grandchildren and less mobile members of the family.

Lovely local walks and the village of St. Saturnin has all the facilities you need without having to drive anywhere.

The Pont du Gard is easy to get to and the river is lovely to swim in as is the lake at Monmoiron and as it is close to Mont Ventoux those wanting a drive to the top for a great view should do it.

We like the village of Goult and Sault is a lovely small town.

The hoopoes that visited the trees in the garden made bird watching exciting.

We would certainly recommend this property.

2nd visit - superb house, lovely location.

  • 5 of 5

2 weeks is never enough at La Musardiere. The house is comfortable and furnished with everything one could wish for and the garden and pool well maintained and with the most marvellous views across to the Luberon hills.

If that is possible we enjoyed our stay even more this second year. A beautiful new wooden terrace set of table, chairs and parasol has appeared, plus an electric barbecue - a useful addition in an area where a charcoal barbecue would be a serious fire risk. Down at the pool was a chest for the nice new set of recliner cushions to go with the sun-loungers. All household supplies, particularly kitchen and linens were plentiful and in good order. We lacked for nothing - except perhaps for a washing up brush - not something so easily come-by in a French supermarket, it seems! Will bring our own next year.

St Saturnin (les-Apt,) is a delightful village on the southern slopes of the Vaucluse plateau. With 2 boulangeries, a boucherie/charcuterie, a good greengrocer/health food shop, a small super-market, 2 cafe/bars and at least 4 restaurants all within walking distance of the house, there is no need to stir further if one doesn't wish to do so. For eating out we were particularly taken with the restaurant, L'Estrade, where we had excellent food and found a great ambience based on local presence. Trying La Restanque for the first time this year, we also had one of the best pizzas I've ever tasted. One goes to the Hotel St Hubert for the panoramic view of the Luberon Hills from their balcony in the evening. The pleasant, family-run Hotel Les Voyageurs also has its charms and, if one wants a change from St Saturnin, there are good meals to be had in neighbouring Villars, a delightful and un-touristy village, also within walking distance for the young and/or fit.

Beyond St Saturnin, but not too far, are all the other charming villages and small towns of the region. This year we particularly enjoyed visiting Simiane la Rotonde and Sault to the north and re-visiting Rustrel, Lourmarin and Roussillon. There really is something for everyone here.

We have now holidayed in St Saturnin les Apt 4 times and found nowhere nicer to stay than La Musardiere. I doubt it will be our last visit. Many thanks to the Macraes for making it such a great place to stay.

Fantastic holiday house!

  • 5 of 5

We stayed at La Musardiere for a week and could not have asked for a better place to spend our holiday. The view over the Luberon from the terrace and pool is stunning, you immediately feel a part of the landscape. It is so peaceful that you can enjoy the sound of the breeze while you look out at the countryside. The pool is fantastic - our kids loved it. We spent many an evening on the terrace making use of the BBQ and enjoying the alfresco dining.

The house itself is very clean and spacious enough for our family of five, with cosy couches and a separate tv area allowing for everyone to be comfortable. The kitchen is extremely well equipped. The gorgeous village of Saint-Saturnin-les-Apt is an easy 5-10 min(depending on how old your kids are!) walk from the house. I highly recommend the weekly market! Many beautiful villages of the Luberon are only a short drive away.

Correspondence with the owners was always easy and prompt, and they were very available for any questions we had.

Lovely Experience

  • 5 of 5

We were impressed with the facilities of the house. The kitchen was very well equipped and made the experience of eating at home most enjoyable. The pool was brilliant and thoroughly enjoyed by the kids! The property was well maintained and clean throughout. Duncan was extremely helpful and readily available if needed.

Everything promised - lovely house and location

  • 5 of 5

The reviews were spot on. La Musardiere is a pleasant, cleverly designed house set in a beautiful, mature planted garden. Though most rooms are not particularly large they are perfectly adequate in size and the quality of furnishing throughout: living areas, bedrooms, bathrooms and kitchen makes this a very comfortable holiday home. It lacks for nothing.

The pool is the best we've ever encountered, deep enough to dive, long enough to swim lengths and with easy access steps for young and old - essential for our mixed-age party of family and friends. The terraces and garden provide lots of different areas for relaxing/eating/ drinking in sun or shade and taking in the fine views of the Luberon Hills to the south. It must be said that some quite steep steps and fairly rough ground don't make for the most young-child-friendly terrain, (something almost impossible to achieve in a mediterranean garden after a long, hot summer.) However, with a bit of care, plus the secure gate and hedging, we managed to keep a 2 year-old and a 5 year-old safe and happy.

A great asset is being able to walk into St Saturnin, itself, a charming small town with weekly market and such a useful selection of shops, cafes, restaurants that one rarely has to set foot in the car to cater for one's basic needs. And then there are the local walks; choices to suit all directly out of the house or up from behind the town.

Further afield, yet all within about half an hour's drive, are the many beautiful villages of the Luberon: Goult, Gordes, Roussillon, Saignon, Lacoste, Menerbes, Bonnieux, Lourmarin, to name a few. A short sortie north into the plateau of Vaucluse and one can visit the magnificent Abbey of Senanque or the smaller Abbey of Valsaintes with its fascinating history, sculptures and still developing gardens - a new discovery for us this year.

It is hard to imagine a holiday home and location that offers more comforts and variety of local choices than La Musardiere. The property is very well maintained and the owners extremely helpful and keen to ensure that their guests have a great time. This year was our 3rd visit to St Saturnin and La Musardiere the best house we've stayed in. I'm sure we will return.

Owner's Response: Thanks for taking the time to submit such a comprehensive review. You are absolutely right to comment that the changes of level in the garden, the required terracing and steps to the lower level, and of course the swimming pool, are challenges for families with young children. We are delighted you enjoyed your stay at La Musardiere and we would be delighted to welcome you again in the future.

Gorgeous villa set within stunning scenery!

  • 5 of 5

A beautiful setting and a comfortable well equipped house. We felt at home and relaxed in this villa which is full of French charm. The owners were very helpful in providing advice on places to visit. The villa is located on the edge of the village so amenities are within walking distance. We found the villagers really welcoming and helpful. The village itself is a quiet pretty village off the tourist track. The house has amazing views of the surrounding landscape, particularly beautiful from the terrace overlooking the valley to the Luberon mountains. The pool is a very good size and was a star attraction with our children. Places we particularly enjoyed were; Gordes, Moustiers-Ste-Marie, Gorges du Verdon, Lavender fields outside Sault (slightly past its best by the time we arrived but stunning scenery, must come back to see in full bloom). We had a fantastic week here with our four children and would thoroughly recommend this villa to anyone.

The medieval village of Saint Saturnin lès Apt nestles in the shelter of a low cliff, with the ruins of a castle high above. The village has a ‘lived in’ feel, and although visited by tourists, its character remains ‘local’ with all necessary amenities. You can stroll through the narrow streets lined by ancient houses, many with plaques noting their history and wander up to the 11th century castle to enjoy a magnificent view of the sunset over the village and the Luberon hills beyond. Saint Saturnin les Apt, situated in the Parc National de Luberon, is very close to the famous villages of Roussillon, Gordes and the 'coup de coeur' villages of the Luberon including Bonnieux, Menerbes and Lacoste. The full range of outdoor summer activities can be accessed locally. The local town of Apt (8 km) has a range of services. Avignon (40 minutes drive) and Aix en Provence (1 hour) are easily accessible.
