SELF CATERING VILLA IN VENDEE, OASIS OF CALM, NEAR BEACH AND ISLE DE RE

Fontenay-le-Comte Barn Rental Photos and Description

Stylish, 3 bedroom renovated 19th century Barn in the Heart of Venise Vert

This detached property has been completely rebuilt by its owner to provide a lovely modern house yet in keeping with its origins. The lounge features a modern wood-burner as well as exposed beams, original stonework and a wood floor. There is a modern fitted kitchen and both floors have a shower room with basin and separate toilet. Outside is a large enclosed garden, perfect for sitting quietly in the shade of the hot summer sun. In the heart of the Marais Poitevin canal network you can hire canoes and there are several pretty local villages and markets and the beaches of the Vendée and Charente are within an hour’s drive.

Climate:

Our region is blessed with an exceptional number of sunshine hours per year ( 2250). It is the sunniest region in Western France. Winter is mild and the mimosas flower as early as January; Spring comes early (and is beautiful) and, whilst Summer naturally sees most tourist activity, Autumn is still warm enough for the calmer main holiday.

The Coast:

The coast of the Poitou Charentes is one of the most popular with French holidaymakers, known for its long stretches of fine sand and good weather. The famous coastal town of La Rochelle is located in the Charente Maritime department. The old harbour and three medieval towers symbolise the port's rich history; there are lively quayside markets, trendy bars and excellent restaurants a-plenty Take a guided tour in a horse-drawn carriage, a boat trip to Fort Boyard or visit the fascinating aquarium The idyllic beaches of the Ile de Re (some 30km worth) are also within easy reach and the island is well worth a day's visit in its own right.

The Countryside:

The area is perfect for walking, riding and cycling The countryside is made up of rolling hills divided up into a patchwork quilt of sunflower and corn fields interspersed with fields containing cows and goats. The marais poitevin (or Green Venice) is a fascinating maze of rivers, dykes and tree-shaded canals which thread between meadows and fields. They cover an area of 230,000 acres from Niort and Fontenay-Le-Compte to the Atlantic ocean. The best way to explore is by boat, either with or without a guide. Visit, also, the Poitou donkey park at Dampierre-sur-Boutonne and marvel at this special breed of dreadlocked donkey!

Theme Parks:

Futuroscope, in Poitiers, is a collection of simulated visual spectacles, ranging from a white knuckle ride to journeys of dicovery in 3D to a magic carpet to a ride in a Formula 1 car. Puy du Fou is a huge medieval theme park with fascinating displays during both the day and the night. Marvel at the beautiful birds of prey, gasp at the stunt riders and take a step back in time in the vast roman stadium.

History:

The region's history could have been lifted from an adventure story book: visit medieval fortresses, roman churches, Renaissance chateaux, protestant temples, grand abbeys, ramparts, fortifications and dungeons. Across the region stand some 600 beautiful examples of the Romanesque sanctuary, a heritage which began around the 10th century with techniques born of the Christian Roman Empire

Food & Drink:

The food of the region is simple and rustic, the food of peasants, but created from the wonderful local vegeatbles, fruits, dairy produce and fish. Seafood has pride of place with mussels in white wine and oysters wrapped in bacon and grilled with garlic butter as two of the more famous examples. Eels flourish in the marshes of the Poitou and are eaten grilled on coals or stewed with onions, muhrooms, butter and white wine. Other favourites from the marshes are fricassed frogs legs or garlic-stuffed snails. The markets of the region are colourful and extremely interesting, there is no better place to buy your provisions; lamb, beef or seafood, melons from Haut-Poitou or vegetables from the coast. There are 50 or so goat's cheeses or how about a torteau fromager, a delicate cake made from goat's cheese with a crispy blackened top. Those with a sweet tooth can buy some candied angelica in Niort or taste a multitude of flavoured honeys in Coulonges market.

A HOME AWAY FROM HOME

  • 5 of 5
My family and I stayed in this beautifully converted barn for a week in the early summer of this year. The accommodation is stylish, comfortable, spacious and extremely good value for money.
The owner Mariusz was always available and most helpful with suggestions on nearby visitor attractions, local restaurants and activities.
We spent a wonderful day out at the nearest beach, sampled local cuisine at a nearby village and took a lazy, scenic boat trip along the nearby canal. There are plenty of beautiful walks around the area too.
During our stay my daughter had the opportunity to feed the chickens with Mariusz, harvest honey from his very own bee hives and even go fishing to catch her own fish for dinner while my husband and I dined on local fresh oysters, wine and champagne.
We had an unforgettable holiday in France and hope to return very soon.
Thank you Mariusz for everything!

Owner's Response: It was my pleasure to have you as my guests! My bees were't too happy about the honey, but few months later I did the same... This year I had more than 70Kg of honey.
Again....thank you for choosing my place, more feaures added for the 2012 season!

CHARMY AND COSY ACCOMODATION

  • 5 of 5
Really nice refurnished cottage in the middle of "la Venice verte", in Marais Poitevin.
Brand new furniture, baths and kitchen. The house is nicely decorated, and clean. Lovely garden to enjoy meals outside the house. Quiet and really peaceful village.
The owner, Mariusz, a great guy who was really kind to us, making sure we had everything we needed to enjoy our stay.
Plenty of activities are waiting for you in the surrounding villages (cycling, romantic boat promenades through the channels, etc.)
We would strongly recommend this house for 2 couples with or without children.

EXCELLENT LOCATION - EVEN BETTER VALUE!!!

  • 5 of 5
My girlfriend and I stayed at this property in Aug 2011 and it was easily the best value break we have had. The accomodation is very clean and tidy and the friendly owner Mariusz was on hand to help with any of our requests and also to offer friendly tourism information for the area.
We spent our time drinking local champagne and eating oysters straight from the sea.... this was a luxury break on a shoestring.

We will definately be visiting again in the near future....

EXCELLENT

  • 5 of 5
My family and I have stayed at numerous self catering properties in France over the years. This is by far the best well presented, spacious property we have stayed in. It is a coverted barn completed to a very high specification.
The owner Mariusz is one of the most genuine people I have had the pleasure to meet. Everything from booking the property, to arrival and throughout the holiday was no trouble to him. He was always available if required and allowed us to share in a little glimpse of the wonderful life in france. This consisted of allowing my son to feed the chickens, be involved in harvesting honey from the hives, offering us fish and fresh water languistines from the local rivers / canals.
We enjoyed the property and surrounding area so much that we have already re booked to go back.
I would describe 'La Coudreau' has a small Hamlet within the countryside approximately 50 minutes east of La Rochelle. The location is rural, the local people are very friendly.
This area is known as the Venice of france. If you enjoy cycling then there is everything from cycling through the small villages to cycling on the vast net work of canals stopping off at the local small cafes / restaurants or taking a picnic.
you can also take canoes on the canals, which can be rented nearby.
Fontenay le-comte is nearby where there is a large forest for excellent cycling.
La Rochelle is an historic port and very good to visit. as well as having an interesting history, there are museums, restaurants / street entertainers / shops.
There are numerous beaches approx 50 minutes away, for you to body board / surf / windsurfing / just relax.
