Local beaches and towns: Salgado, a very natural and beautiful 6km long beach is just 2 min drive/20 min walk and offers peace and quiet, ideal for beach walks with a beach bar in the Summer.
Nazare, 10 min by car, is a traditional fishing and seaside town with long promenade and tiny winding streets. Popular with families, it has a golden beach, patrolled by a lifeguard in the Summer. A funicular railway takes you up to Sitio, where the views are stunning. Nazare also has a marina ( boats for hire) a fun water park and lots of restaurants.
Sao Martinho do Porto (also 10 min away) is another old seaside town but more modern in comparison to Nazare. A large horse shoe shaped natural bay offers safe bathing and a nature walk.
Both towns have daily markets selling local produce and good supermarkets. They also have a wide selection of small local shops and restaurants offering fish, meat and local dishes e.g. Bacalhao, ChickenPiri Piri and Leitao often at bargain prices. Local wine is also a bargain.
So many places of interest: There are no less than three world heritage sites in local towns in this area i.e. a Cistercian monastery at Alcobaca (also a wine museum here), Manueline monastery at Batalha and the Knights Templar Convento do Cristo at Tomar (one of our favourite days out). The town of Fatima is one of the most important centres of pilgramage for the Roman Catholic world.
Obidos is an impressive medieval walled town, 20 min by car, where time seems to have stood still for several hundred years.
Caldas da Rainha, is a local thermal spa town with a good local daily market in the central Praca da Republica.
There are so many places which are a little further away but fine for a day trip by car, e.g. Peniche - a thriving fishing port and embarkation point for Ilha Berlenga, Santarem - one of the most historic cities in Portugal, Mafra with it's vast Palace Convent, the fascinating old town of Sintra and, of course, Lisbon.
Area of natural beauty and tradition: Accessible from the house are several walking trails which offer so many different and breathtaking views at each twist and turn. It is possible to walk down to the beach but there are also paths around the surrounding hills overlooking the beach.
There is a very long and superb stretch of coastline north of Nazare which has some very pleasant coastal towns (our favourite is Sao Pedro de Moel) with unspoilt beaches. This whole coastline is backed by Pinhal de Leiria, a vast 700 year old pine forest and an area of great natural beauty, ideal for picnics and walking.
The Serras de Aire e Candeeiros is a scenic national park, 40 min by car, a mix of rugged hills and upland farmland. Ideal for walking and picnics.
The whole area is steeped in tradition and many local towns and villages hold their own fairs and festivals which are delightful and include traditional dress, dancing, games and competitions. The local people are so very welcoming and happy for you to join in.
