About Zoe Cawthorn

We have lived in Spain in the Alpjurras since 2003. We spent 3 years doing up the property in Orgiva and subsequently rented it out for holidays. We spent any spare time that we had, searching for another property but this time near to the sea. We were delighted when we found this old town house in the little Spanish village of Maro. We love the Spanish way of life and enjoy renovating properties. Although we both grew up in the UK (me in Surrey and Nigel in Manchester) I had spent 6 years living in Spain in the 1980's and wanted to come back here to live. Nigel was looking for a new adventure so was more than happy to try Spain.

Zoe Cawthorn purchased this house in 2010

Why Zoe Cawthorn chose Maro

This old town house is in the quiet Spanish village of Maro. within walking distance of bars, restaurants and a couple of shops. It is 5 minutes drive into Nerja or 30 minutes walk. The property has been done up to a high standard and is very comfortable.

What makes this house unique

It is an authentic Spanish village. The bourganvilla in the courtyard, the views of Nerja and the sea from the upstairs patio and the way it lent itself to be modernised whilst being able to keep the character of the house, are what made us choose this property over the many others that we looked at over the 8 years it took us to find it.

Relaxing stay in Maro

  • 5 of 5
Enjoyed staying in your beautiful home! We loved Maro, a lovely taste of rural Spain. Sampled lots of restaurants, found them all to be good. Little Italy in Nerja was particularly good, delicious pizzas and very reasonably priced. Granada is well worth the visit as well as the Alhambra. Best beaches are Maro and Alberguilla if you fancy somewhere a bit quieter. Felt very comfortable in your home, thank you for a lovely 12 days here.

Owner's Response: We are so pleased that you enjoyed your stay in our house in Maro. From what you told us it seems that you made the most of exploring the area. You obviously enjoy exactly what we do about the area. Maro is a quiet sleepy village and you feel like you are in rural Spain but you are only 5 minutes drive from all the facilities and a buzzing town if you feel like a change.

Thank you for taking the time to write a review for us, it really helps other people to decide whether it is what they are looking for as a holiday destination.

All the best Zoe

Wonderful experience

  • 5 of 5
We very much enjoyed our 2nd visit to Zoe and Nigel properties in Spain.

Firstly we once again spent a week in their beautiful house in the quiet little Spanish village of Maro, which we enjoyed enormously. We were then lucky enough to spend a week in their new house in the countryside between Nerja and Frigiliana. Spectacular views of Nerja and the sea with the bonus of superb panoramic mountain views as well. As the house is their family home and only rarely rented out we were lucky enough to be the first people to stay there. We then spent our third week, just 50 minutes drive away, in their house in Orgiva. Again another family home, beautifully decorated and so peaceful with stunning views.

Well done Nigel and Zoe, you have created 3 places all completely different but with the same quality and ambience. You have managed to create something for everyone.

Great stay for the holidays

  • 5 of 5
We really enjoyed this lovely, newly renovated home for our 4 day visit to the area. The town of Maro was very sweet and felt quite authentic. We had a fabulous New Year's Eve on the balcon in Nerja where we dined outside and danced until well after midnight. We would love to come back and repeat the experience. The kitchen was well equipped and if you looked closely you would fine rosemary in the garden, braided garlic in the kitchen and lemons on the table to help make a great meal. Nigel and Zoe were quite helpful and patient with our questions. The only thing I would have liked is more reading light. It was a dark time of year and the house seemed dimly lit.

Owner's Response: Thank you so much for your review. There is also Thyme growing in the courtyard and we grow many more herbs from spring time through to about December. I agree that it does start to get dark around 6.30 in the evening and we do prefer the subtle lighting rather than the harsh lighting that you find in most rental properties. We stay there and sit on the sofas under the brighter light, but we will get a reading lamp in there straight away in case others struggle to read. Thank you for your suggestion and so pleased that you enjoyed yourselves.

Renovated casita in charming seaside village

  • 4 of 5
We were looking to experience the daily rhythm of Spanish living during our two week visit to Costa del Sol. This renovated home on a hilly, narrow street in Maro certainly met that criteria, as we watched parents tuck children into car seats to deliver them to school, and passed elderly residents enjoying their daily strolls. The paths of the dog walkers became familiar. The upstairs master bedroom was so dark and quiet we slept late, and woke to enjoy the sunny, beautiful sea views from the adjacent terrace.

Maro was a good base for venturing to different sites and towns in Andalusia: Granada (Alhambra); Marbella (esp Picasso Museum); and Ronda (our favorite among many.)

The Maro beach in November was nearly deserted but a few brave souls endured the chilly waters, including our visiting relatives for 4 days, who stayed in the bedroom accessed through the courtyard. With an adjacent bathroom, it provided a measure of privacy to our guests. Dining in the sunny courtyard surrounded by bougainvillea blossoms was a delight.

We used and appreciated having the dishwasher and washing machine. Other than the pesky ants, we found the kitchen clean and well equipped to prepare meals for a family.
We needed WiFi to connect with our office daily and Zoe and Nigel were most helpful getting the connection restored. The soccer fans were a bit disappointed in not seeing more European games available on the TV, but PBS fans in the US will recognize many of their favorites on the BBC channels.

Along with the beach and coastal views, Maro has a few hotels and restaurants (we found the daily noon special La Entrada a great bargain, and the staff very helpful) but if you need gas, banking services, grocery or pharmacy supplies, a short drive to Nerja is required. While it's true you don't absolutely need a car - taxis and buses are available - having one certainly provides additional options. Hikers with backpacks, alone and in groups, trekked the route from Nerja to Maro daily, many on their way to the fascinating Nerja caves (or hills beyond), an easy uphill jaunt from the townhouse. We also rented bikes and toured the coastal areas, but windy weather limited our cycling.

If you are looking for a less touristy, quiet town with access to the beach, lovely views of the sea, and helpful hosts who have modernized an authentic pueblo, this property should meet your needs for a relaxing holiday!

Owner's Response: Thank you very much for your very informative review. We are so pleased that you enjoyed yourselves.

We managed to get rid of the ants in the kitchen very easily. Unfortunately this can happen in Spain if food is left out which is what the guests before you did.

Just to confirm to people from the UK, we supply gas for the house. The gas you mention in your review is what us Brits call petrol, which you need for your car.

Thanks again for taking the time to write a review. It really helps guests to get a feel for the house before they book.

Hope to see you both again sometime.

Regards

Zoe and Nigel

Beautiful property, great location, great owners!

  • 5 of 5
My friend and I spent a week at this property in April and had a wonderful time. It was a beautiful and very comfortable property in an excellent and quiet location. The owners were great, waiting patiently for us to arrive (we weren't so skilled with our rental car). They were super friendly and helpful. Beautiful inner courtyard, lovely views and sunsets, really everything here was just so comfortable and so perfect! Also perfectly located for walking tours in the mountains behind the house, which is what my friend and I spent our week doing. Highly recommended!!

Car: not necessary

In the heart of the historic, coastal village of Maro and just a 45 minute drive from Malaga airport. This beautiful unspoilt village is one of the very few in such original condition along the entire coast. The village is still mostly inhabited by Spanish people. Just a few kilometres from the hustle and bustle of the busy coastal town of Nerja this tranquil little village is a peaceful retreat. There are a handful of restaurants and bars within a few minutes walk and Maro beach is only a 15 minute walk away through farm land. Nerja is half an hours walk along a very popular walking/jogging pathway and only a few minutes by car. The famous caves of Nerja are nearby and the picturesque mountain village of Frigiliana only a few minutes drive away. Maro is a superb location for basing yourself as it has excellent access to many popular places that are of interest to holiday-makers, such as The Alhambra Palace and the city of Granada, Sevilla, Ronda, Malaga, Cordoba and many more.

Other Activities: Famous Nerja Caves, sight-seeing, water park, aquarium
