The description did not do this place justice; it was nicer than we could have imagined. The owners, Maggie and Mark were warm and welcoming and very helpful to us in planning our day trips. What a wonderful way to experience Ireland! The Coach House was quaint, very clean and very comfortable. When we left at the end of the week, we felt as if we were leaving home. If given the opportunity, would love to stay there again. Plenty to do in the nearby towns and villages, and easy driving to further distances. The cold and damp weather didn't dampen our experience at all. Marty Brennan, Dearborn, Michigan

We (2 adults and a 4 year old) spent 2 wonderful nights here. Our host Mark and Margaret were wonderful. They were so welcoming. Our daughter had so much fun feeding the ducks and hens!

The cottage had all the facilities that we needed. The location was perfect to visit Kilkenny. Loved the fire place and we had excess to endless supply of wood. Mark even recommended and loaned us some amazing DVDs. What more could we ask for!

This is a cottage that we would love to visit again in the near future and we would recommend anyone visiting Kilkenny.

Thank you Mark and Margaret for your lovely hospitality and letting have a chance to stay in your charming and cozy cottage!

St Columb's Coach House: Our dream...

St Columb's Coach House: Our dream...

Our family occupied the Coach House for 15 amazing nights from 3 to 18 October 2011. The house and the location could not have been more perfect (not to mention…the neighbors) for what we were after on this holiday. We wanted the coziness of a rustic cottage (with all of the basic amenities, of course) and the tranquility of a rural environment yet within a very reasonable driving distance to Kilkenny.
The house itself offered 2 huge bedrooms and 2 bathrooms (1 each per level). My wife and I found the bed’s to be extremely comfortable and slept oh so well. Was it the beds, or were we were just that relaxed? Who knows? It’s advertised as being capable of sleeping 5, but could easily sleep many more (I’m sure the owner’s (Margaret and Mark) daughters’ friends could vouch for that…hahaha). The wood stove was a fantastic feature with an endless supply of wood provided in a shed out back. The house was well equipped with all of the kitchen essentials (everything you need to cook up a full Irish breakfast, a big vat of lamb stew, or a shepherd’s pie….all of which we did). An endless supply of maps, books, and even toys for the wee ones were provided. Our daughter, 2 years old at the time, loved it! By the way, Mark….Margaret….I’m sorry to tell you, but I believe we (I won’t mention any names specifically) have smuggled a little toy dog of yours back to the states. Many o’ nights were enjoyed out front from a gazebo out in the garden. Neighboring that was a grass tennis court for those looking to work off a few pints or maybe just get a little exercise.
For those who enjoy a good run (especially on a brisk autumn morning), there is a wonderful 3-4 mile loop that finishes off descending into the nearby village of Inistioge. The view is absolutely breath taking, as is the preceding climb through some pasture lands. If you’re a photographer, you want to be there…trust me. The village itself is quite lovely. It has a small market (great for the staples), a few restaurants (which close early…so be thankful for the well equipped kitchen of the Coach House), and, of course, a selection of very hospitable pubs. On the walk from the village back to the Coach House (app. ½ mile), you will pass by a pitch where, if timed right, you may catch the local lads playing Gaelic football, or the Kilkenny favorite…hurling.
As there are not enough characters to praise this place, or our experience, I’ll end with this… the Belchers were fantastic hosts!!!!!

The Coach House

We (2 adults) had a wonderful stay in the coach house from 24dec - 31dec 2011.
The location is what we were looking for, quiet and rural, with decent road connections to make day trips, and plenty of hiking possibilities. The coach house is 30 meters away from the main house where the owners Margaret and Mark live. They are like magic, when you don't "need" them, you don't see or hear them, but when you do need them they are very welcoming, kind and helpful.
The house is big and nicely re-done, it has the needed facilities (e.g. bath and shower, 2 toilets, 3 bedrooms) and an equipped kitchen which we really needed as many restaurants and hotels were closed during the holidays. The wood stove in the living area was very nice to have on the chilly December evenings, sorry for burning all your wood Mark :-)
The nearby village has a convenience store and a couple of pubs, for restaurants Thomastown and Kilkenny are in good driving distance. There are tons of books and maps in the house to get familiar with the things to do and see in the area. The only points that needs attention in our opinion are the old mattresses, for the rest the house was spot on. Being cat-lovers we much enjoyed the 2 cats, who live on the premises, dropping by every day for a petting and purring session :-)

Thank you for your hospitality!
M and R
Owner's Response: Thanks M & R for the lovely comments and thanks for drawing our attention to the mattresses.
We checked them out and you are quite right. We will be replacing them next week so a good nights rest will be available to all! Margaret & Mark

Inistioge's St Columb's Coach House = Perfect

Inistioge's St Columb's Coach House = Perfect

My family and I spent 11 wonderful nights at the Coach House in late autumn. Originally we were to spend 5 nights, and after taking my husband to the airport, my brother and I were to continue our journey north. But the Coach House had become our 'home away from home' so much that we couldn't drag ourselves away from the cozy lounge with wood fire (my favourite room and also popular with the visiting kittens!) and gorgeous views across the valley. Instead we stayed put and made longer day trips!

We chose the Coach House because we were looking for a taste of the Irish countryside but with a village nearby and easy access to the major sights in the 'sunny' south-east. We also wanted somewhere that would be spacious enough for three adults, and the Coach House definitely met these requirements: a short walk into pretty 'Circle of Friends' village Inistioge but only 30 minutes to Waterford and Kilkenny; and two large bedrooms, both with en-suites. There was also a well-equipped kitchen which meant that we could make hearty Irish breakfasts or dinners when we felt like it. If we needed anything, from another pot to condiments to inside local knowledge, the owners Margaret and Mark were always helpful. This extended to recommended DVDs from Mark's impressive collection.

Depending on the weather and our mood, some days we did local things with short drives/walks; other days we did the longer day trips. We particularly enjoyed close-to-home sights many of which we had to ourselves. Walks along the river at Inistioge and through the magnificent Woodstock are a must, as is Jerpoint Abbey outside Thomastown. Nearby Graiguenamanagh (Duiske Abbey & Cushendale Woollen Mills) which we finally managed to pronounce, and stopping in at Nicholas Moss Pottery at Bennetsbridge (the cafe has the best scones in Ireland) on our way to Kilkenny were other local highlights. Despite incurring a hailstorm, we loved tucked away St. Mullins with its fascinating mini museum and Norman motte. And on a wet day take a book (or ipad) to Mount Juliet and relax in the clubhouse with more scones.

Longer trips but highly recommended are the Copper Coast to Waterford (Waterford Crystal is back), Vinegar Hill, Wexford (Greenacres shop/bistro is worth the trip alone), Curracloe Beach (Saving Private Ryan), Rock of Cashel and a little gem, Lismore. We even got to the English market at Cork.

Staying at the Coach House was like staying with family - in a good way! We'll be back.
