STUNNING, TRANQUIL LAKESIDE VILLA 10 MINUTES FROM BEACH, GALLE

Galle Villa Rental Photos and Description

Architect designed villa, every bedroom with amazing views, five double bedrooms

Siyambala House is a luxury villa overlooking the serene 43-acre Koggala Lake on two sides, just 15 minutes' walk to one of the World's Most Beautiful Beaches, Koggala Beach, and 20 minutes' drive to Galle Fort. It can accommodate 10 adults in great comfort.

With its high-vaulted ceilings, traditional freezes over the windows and doors and inlaid floors, Siyambala House can best be described as a modern take on the Sri Lankan vernacular. It is light, airy and, at more than 4,000 sq ft, very spacious. The covered terrace benefits from a wonderfully calming breeze from the water, providing the perfect place to eat, take in the views, socialise, or doze. There are five large air-conditioned bedrooms: four doubles and one twin; two on the second floor and three downstairs. Three bedrooms have en suite bathrooms.

Add to this the spectacular 15-metre infinity pool and the comfort of the huge atrium, and you have all the ingredients in place for a tropical holiday to remember.

Tours: Why not visit Sri Lanka’s myriad delights (such as Colombo, the ancient capitals, religious sites, the tea country, Kandy, a Yala safari, etc) before or after you relax at Siyambala? Our manager, Nalaka, who is a government-registered tour guide, can provide you with the perfect tour, regardless of your time or budget.

Events: Please contact us if you would like Siyambala House to host a special event for you: a reunion, wedding, anniversary celebration, etc.. We'd be delighted to take care of all arrangements!

Perfect location and staff

  • 5 of 5
We are a family of five (including 3 kids, 7, 11 and 13 years old) who have spent three weeks in Siyambala House during July 2012, where we had a wonderful time. First of all, before getting there, we really appreciated the contacts we had with the owners, especially with Alison who has been very patient providing us with all the details we needed about the location. Once in Siyambala house, you will still be in touch with friendly and helpful people. Indeed, all the staff, and especially Nalaka, the manager, is very thoughtful, always willing to do the best to offer you a memorable stay and make you feel at home. For instance, they set up a wonderful birthday party for our youngest daughter with everything you would expect when you are a little girl celebrating your 7th birthday : a big birthday cake, with your name on it and of course seven candles, a birthday card, a bunch of flowers and things you would not expect such as…a wonderful fireworks, which I believe she will always remember !It was a real pleasure to start the day with a copious breakfast, served on the large terrace with exotic fresh fruits (exotic for french people !) such as papaya, mangoustan, passion fruits…and to savour here the meals of the cook, who according to our girls, did the best french fries they have ever tasted (and, about french fries, I believe we can trust them!), but who would also prepare curries and other Sri Lankan specialties and sea fruits that all of us appreciated. The house is very large, well maintained with comfortable furniture, with a nice and also large garden well kept by the gardener, and pleasantly illuminated in the evening. From the house, and from all the rooms, we could enjoy everyday the fantastic view on the lake, especially sunsets in the evening from the large infinite pool and the terrace, where we could relax with the gentle breeze of the trade winds. The surroundings are very quiet, without anything that could trouble this peaceful location.Whenever you want, the driver will get you to very nice and close beaches, as well as other locations such as Galle. Our favourite beach was Mirissa. We aslo had the opportunity to have a journey around Sri Lanka, many thank’s to Nalaka who organized it perfectly well, and we came back home with wonderful memories of a safari, of the perahera of Kandy, of the elephant orphanage, of a train trip in the mountains, surrounded by tea plantations…

A perfect tamarind hideaway

  • 5 of 5
The journey to Siyambala House does little to prepare you for what awaits. Driving down from Galle, with the lapping Indian Ocean by your side, it is clear you're in a special part of the world. But turn off the main road, over the railway track, down winding lanes and onto gravel tracks, and it’s not a matter of being far from the madding crowd anymore, but after a while you wonder if it still exists at all. Soon after that, you realise that you really don’t care either way…

Entering the house is, literally, an eye-opening experience. To the right, the dining area and veranda, ahead of you, the living room atrium; all around you, the lake. That we arrived just in time for sundowners and a magical sunset (they’re all magical) was just icing. The water at dusk is enchanting, the way it catches the fading light. Someone else mentioned the squadrons of bats (is that a better collective noun than “flock”?) and they truly are a sight to behold; don't be alarmed though, they fly their missions at high altitude…

None of the rooms would really be out of place in a high-end resort, while you’ll find the twin upstairs is great for kids. If there are any tiny quibbles – such as the water pressure being a little low on (rare) occasion, or the presence of lightning-fast geckos in your room, these simply reflect where you are and are hardly the fault of the house or the staff. Because the staff were great too. Always happy to help, unobtrusive yet always easily to hand, friendly and happy to talk (cricket being the cross-cultural ice-breaker), and happy to meet your every need. The manager of the property is a man who has more connections than the London Underground and can get things done far more effectively than Boris Johnson.

As for the food, well we ate like kings. The curries (the fish!), the vegetables (the eggplants, the beans, the onions and greens!), the salads, the chilies, the coconut sambal… Be sure to savour the local specialties; life has not been the same without my morning string hoppers since…

If you're new to Sri Lanka, I recommend you take a copy of Ondaatje’s Running in the Family… it will transport you back to a time and place, and the cinnamon oil factory at the end of Siyambala’s driveway will take on an even more pleasurable significance… Embrace Sri Lanka, embrace its beauty, embrace the people – and I promise it will all embrace you back, with interest.

And what an exquisite house to do it all from…

The perfect idyllic Sri Lanka getaway

  • 5 of 5
There's a moment you realise that this is the perfect place. Imagine a lake shaped like a vase. You're in a beautiful - and I mean beautiful - new house near the base of the vase. The sun sets down the lake, from top to bottom. And this is the moment. At 6pm every evening, the sun sets and the orange light plays out over the water, filling up the vase shape from top to bottom. Just at that moment, a flock (not sure if flock is the right word) of bats fly across the lake from the other side to above where you are, flying through the air, across the by-now red golden lake. It is the most magical sight and it's entirely befitting this gorgeous place. If you're looking here you'll already know Sri Lanka is lovely - but if you don't know that, take my word: it's lovely. The people are as warm as the air, it's picturesque and still reasonably cheap. This part of Sri Lanka is beautiful too - but you can look all that up. The house is completely gorgeous - lovely, calm and peaceful. If any of those last three words tick your box, then you're in for a treat. And I haven't even mentioned the infinity pool...

Perfect spot

  • 5 of 5
We went for a family holiday to relax, recharge and explore the area around Galle. It's always a bit uncertain when you're going to a villa you don't know or haven't had a personal recommendation from but when we finally turned up after the long drive from Colombo we were beyond relieved. The villa itself is beautifully designed in a simple but stylish way. Luxurious but not too fancy that you were forever worrying about what the kids might do. The beds were excellent - very comfortable so no fears there.

It seemed pretty new to me as the garden was young but as it's nestled in amongst lots of mature coconut palms you barely notice (spot the keen gardener). The staff were very friendly, keen and efficient (and kept it clean despite the kids). My only gripe being that some laundry took longer than expected but that was solved after talking with the manager. One of the small rooms had a slightly noisy fan but we hardly used it as the rooms had air conditioning so it wasn't a problem. The villa food was great - simple kids stuff (great chips!) and delicious local food, which was what we had most of the time.

The setting, however, is a gem. It's on a salt water lagoon with lots of mangroves that leads directly to the sea. It's always peaceful and you get some killer sunsets that hover over the infinity pool and merge with the lagoon so plenty of good photo opps - not to mention perfect cocktail opps.
Another bonus of being on Koggala lake is that this is where the prawns and crabs come from. Fishermen paddle over it at various times of the night and day depending on what they're catching. If you ask the chef or manager ahead of time they will call out and get you the freshest seafood possible - and cook it!
We actually discovered the joys of paddling around the lake a little late as we spent most of the time relaxing or sightseeing. I would urge you to get out there sooner. We went in late afternoon and paddled back as the sun was starting to set which was magic.

The villa manager was great and doubled up as our guide too - taking us to some great places. He seemed to know everyone in the area which made life very easy.
There's so much to see and do in the area but I'll leave that to the guidebooks but if you're looking for somewhere lovely to relax and use as a base then this is a perfect place from which to do it.

Looking forward to coming back....

  • 5 of 5
A wonderful two weeks which exceeded all our expectations. The house and its setting is beautiful and Nalaka and his team could not have been kinder or more helpful. Every meal we had was fantastic too. We especially loved having our own firework display (and seeing them being made); taking a boat trip on the lake and visiting Mirissa Beach. We would love to come back.
