Or in the evening drive to Nontron and eat a superb but inexpensive meal in a hotel which has been run by the same family and in the Michelin guide since 1896. This is la France profonde! Or you can walk in the unspoilt terrain of the national park of the Perigord. Or you could visit the Chateau on the hill at Rochechouart - a breathtaking spectacle in a beautiful town which houses a surprisingly avant garde international art gallery. Or play badminton in the garden and then go for an early evening swim in one of the lakes at St Mathieu (5 mins) , at St Estephe (15 mins) or at Videix (20 mins).
Come and enjoy the authentic experience of being deep in the French countryside in a lovely, tranquil and unspoilt location, with excellent local produce and delightful mediaeval market towns.
Charming medieval hamlet on the borders of Dordogne/Limousin, quiet and unspoilt in the heart of this wooded, hilly area of chestnut forests and pasture land. This la France profonde. Lush and green with few signs of tourism. The beautiful lake of St. Mathieu has excellent swimming facilities with a little beach and restaurant. Local cuisine is famous and includes such specialties as pate de foie, truffles, cepes, and confit. Famous sights such as the prehistoric caves at les Eyzies and towns like Bergerac and Montbazillac are all within reasonable travelling distance for a visit to their chateaus for wine tasting. In the heart of the Perigord Parc Nationale this is ideal walking country for nature lovers with a great variety of wild life including birds, butterflies and wild boar. At nearby Rochechouart is a magnificent 16th Century château and art gallery, antique and brocante shops. The area was known for its Resistance during the Second World War and the preserved village of Oradour sur Glanes (30 mins) is a profound monument to their bravery.
