About Elaine and Martin Phizacklea

We are retired business people from the Lake District in England who like the good things in life. We found Puglia offered a relaxed lifestyle with excellent fresh, local produce and wine (Rick Stein thinks so too!). Finding Villa Maria just completed the picture and we fell in love straight away. We want our guests to feel the same way we do when they come here and welcome them personally. We are available to offer any advice or assistance necessary.

Elaine and Martin Phizacklea purchased this villa in 2007

Why Elaine and Martin Phizacklea chose Ostuni

We are very proud of Villa Maria. It was built with much thought and love and is very comfortable and welcoming with a huge, well established garden and large swimming pool. It is very spacious but also welcoming and extremely well equipped, especially for foodies! It is set amongst ancient olive and almond groves way into the horizon which you can admire whilst relaxing on the private veranda enjoying the local wines.

What makes this villa unique

Whilst the villa is set amongst olive groves it is only 5 minutes from the famous Ostuni (Citta Bianca) and Ceglie Messapica (older then Rome). The local towns are all within easy driving distances, as are the Adriatic and Ionian coastline (10 & 20 mins respectively) The airports of Brindisi and Bari are both easily accessible (25mins & 1 hr away). There also golf courses within driving distance too.

Guestbook comments from the owner

I would like to say a big thank you for a wonderful holiday. You must be so proud of your villa. I would also like to apologise, but I realised on our return to the airport that we didn't complete your comments book for guests. If I had remembered I would have put in about the lovely meal that you put on for Phil's birthday. The food and service you gave us was excellent, very good value for money considering the amount of food and dishes that you had done.

I know some people may be put off about being in a remote area, but I think this is a bonus and it is still only 5 minutes from Ostuni and Ceglie. The peace, quiet and tranquility of your villa is 5*, as is the hospitality and furnishings. We have stayed in many villas and your villa is ranking top in Europe. I have told many people about it on my return. We have discussed it and we will return, maybe not next year but definitely the year after. We have a lot more to see and do in the area and take advantage of your villa. Again a big thank you for your hospitality and privilege of renting your villa. 5*

Beautiful villa, in a great area of Italy

  • 5 of 5

Elaine and Martin were great hosts during our stay, very kind with our boys and especially helpful with last minute olive oil and wine deliveries for adults as well (home-made olive oil too!). The villa is beautiful, well set-up for our young family with lots of outdoor space, big living areas and a lovely pool. The villa is also in a great area of Puglia for exploring all the key towns and sites and Elaine has plenty of recommendations.

Owner's Response: Thank you for your lovely review. It was a real pleasure having you stay and your two gorgeous little boys. It's always nice to be able to offer good local wines and home made olive oil to our guests to add to the enjoyment of staying at the villa and Puglia. It is a great property for a young family as you say with all the space. Glad you found the folder and our recommendations useful too. Would love to see you all again should you be in this part of the world. Best wishes to you all. Elaine and Martin.

We've just spent a week at Villa Maria and it was absolutely perfect. A beautiful building, immaculately fitted out, large swimming pool, numerous areas to relax and all set in a lovely gardens.

If it's relaxation you want Villa Maria feels away from it all, but if you want to get out and about to see the delights of Puglia then there are many choices within 10 - 15 minutes.

Elaine and Martin are an absolute delight and cannot do enough for you.... taxi rides to great restaurants, suggestions of the best places to visit and a supply of the best red wine we've ever tasted.

If you like Italy, you'll love Puglia and if you like the luxury of your own villa, than you'll love Villa Maria.

The only downside..........we didn't stay long enough!

Owner's Response: Thank you for such a great review. It was a real pleasure to meet your family and have you stay. We are proud of the villa and it is always gratifying to hear our guests have enjoyed its comforts, large pool and well kept gardens as much as we do. We really hope you do come again and sample a few more Puglian delights, such as the old towns, excellent restaurants, not to mention the local wines! Look forward to seeing you. Cin cin!

Look no further!

After a lot of searching on the internet and many discussions with the rest of the family we decided to go for this villa. This was a very special occasion for us as it was my dad's 60th birthday celebrations. I'm always dubious when booking things like this as sometimes photos can look so much better than the actual villa. But I can safely say the villa looks much better than the photos. As soon as we arrived, the electric gates opened onto a huge swimming pool and vast grounds including grapevines. I was taken aback by the shear size of the property. The condition is fantastic; brilliantly decorated and very clean. I stayed in the Truli which was an experience in itself, very cool and authentic.

Elaine and Martin were great, always on hand for anything from local information to some of their homemade olive oil and wine.

Location-wise it's perfect too as it doesn't suffer from any noise from the main road but is only about 10mins drive from Ostuni or Cegile Messapica. We only managed to get to Ostuni in the week we were there but it has to have some of the best food we've ever tasted and we've been coming to Italy for over 20yrs. Amazing Anti-pasti (which isn't actually just meats and cheeses!), pastas and pizzas. Although, as my mum is a very fine Italian chef herself, we certainly made use of the huge kitchen at the villa which contained every pot, pan and utensil under the sun.

Please don't think twice about booking this villa. We can't wait to start organising another trip. A Truli fantastic experience (had to get a Truli joke in there somewhere.)

We were 7 persons visit wonderful Puglia and Villa Maria in June 2012. It was a fantastic place with the beautiful pool, the fantastic garden to walk around and enjoy life! The villa inside had everything we needed, a big modern kitchen, nice bedrooms and the lovely little “trulliroom” and a lot of space. And the nice place were we could make our own barbequeeveenings in the sunset, wow. We also liked the security arond the villa, it felt very safe.

The Villa is extremely well equipped and comfortable. We will certainly try to return to this wonderful villa. Elaine and Martins hospitality was outstanding. We really hope to see you again x .

The area around the villa is fantastic with a lot of things to se and do. In the village Ceglie nearby we visit very nice restaurants.

Fantastic 5 star villa

  • 5 of 5

Firstly, I'd just like to thank Martin and Elaine for letting out your fabulous villa. We have had one of our most memorable holidays yet! The villa is beautiful, the setting is peaceful and the grounds are well kept. The amenities in the villa are more then you could ask for, you actually only need to unpack your suitcase and you feel like your in your own home, kitchen well stocked with all appliances etc, the decoration is fresh and extremely clean. The choice of DVDs is great! Actually nearly better than our local blockbusters!! The space and layout of the villa is a plus, if you have two families sharing there is amply space to spread out. The owners are fabulous, we feel like we've gained two great friends. Always there to help and offer good guidance on restaurants, places to see etc.

The location is great, only a short car journey to the local towns and beaches. Train station 10 minutes away where you go travel around the coast, both Bari and brindisi are a must to visit.

We had our two young boys with us (3 and 5), they loved the villa, it's a real treasure for all looking for a holiday in south Italy. We'll be booking again!

Our stay in Italy

  • 5 of 5

My wife and I visited Italy with our two grown up children and their partners

We stayed at Villa Maria for a week and thoroughly enjoyed it. The description and photographs on the site were very good but didn't do justice to the property and the siteing. The Villa was immacultely clean , well maintained and comfortable in every aspect .

We work very hard as a family and the stay at the villa was just what the doctor ordered, the weather was great , the accomodation first class, we especially enjoyed the peace and quite, and the owners Martin and Elaine could not have been more friendly and helpful. Since arriving home we have recomended to all our friends that hey should use the proprty if they are in the area , we have already booked for next year .

Thank you for everything Martin/Elaine we will keep in touch and see you next year
