Lovely Villa, delightful owners

We have just returned from a second visit to Villa Maria. We liked the area and villa so much last year that when we planned a second visit to Rome, our first choice was this property. Anzio is an excellent base for Rome if you like to be at the coast and want a few rest days from sightseeing. The train is cheap, runs regularly and takes just over an hour. Villa Maria is perfect for this purpose as it is a five minute walk from the rail station.
The villa is lovely, clean large and airy with high ceilings, the shutters ensure it is cool on the hottest day, with the french doors open a nice cool breeze blows through. It has central heating, which we very much appreciated on the one bad (very wet) day we had. The outside space is wonderful, a large garden with fruit trees and a little fish pond, and a large paved area for eating and sunbathing. There are places to be either in the sun or the shade. It is tastefully furnished and decorated and has a huge bathroom with bath and shower over, as well as a smaller one with shower cubicle. Lovely to have two bathrooms with a party of 5. The kitchen is small, although perfectly functional. There is no space for a dishwasher but has the most innovative way of draining crockery so that the sink area is kept uncluttered. The double cupboard over the sink has racks in the bottom so that the water drains off onto the sink, cleverly making the best use of the space available. There is an expresso coffee machine which unfortunately we never got to grips with.
The villa is set in a very attractive area, just alongside the Piazza St Theresa, we grew very fond of the church bells and they will be an abiding memory.
The owners of this villa are delightful. We met Claudia and Leandro last year, just Leandro this year. We had let him know we were arriving by train and expected to meet him at the villa for keys etc as we knew how to find it. After a very long journey involving three trains, we were surprised and very pleased to see him waiting at the station to take our bags, and three of the party to the villa. When we left (early in the morning) he drove from Rome and took our bags, and three of us back to the station. We really appreciated the kind gesture, this kind of personal service is something you don't get when booking through an agency.
If we ever find ourselves in Anzio again, we will surely make Villa Maria our first choice and have no hesitation in recommending it to others.
