A Perfect Retreat

  • 5 of 5

Marlowe Cottage in my opinion can only be described as perfect in every respect. It was immaculately clean, superbly furnished and very comfortable.

The attention to detail is incredible; ranging from fresh flowers around the house, a bowl of fresh fruits and a very nice 'welcome hamper'.

We ordered a meal from the 'drop-off' menu for our arrival which was excellent and very welcome after a long journey. We would highly recommend the food which we believe is home cooked by the owners.

The village of Calbeck is quiet and away from the 'commercialisation' of some of the Lakeland towns and villages but very pretty and friendly. There is good food and beer at the village pub, just short walk away. We didn't see much of the surrounding area, we were so comfortable where we were!

The owners are very helpful and accommodating and despite being 2 hours later than expected arriving they were there to greet us, with logs burning on the stove.

We would highly recommend this property to anyone looking for a quiet, relaxing break in luxurious surroundings. We have just booked another stay!

Charming cottage

  • 5 of 5

We had a lovely stay in Marlowe cottage. The cottage was a real delight with its jugs of daffodils and homely old world charm! The beds were really comfortable and the linens were sumptuous! And the beautiful tasty baking left out for us was a real treat for all of us. The attention to detail was second to none. Caldbeck is very quaint. We got out and explored the Lake District which is very beautiful. Overall a lovely holiday was had by all and we hope to go back at some stage.

Beautiful, Quiet, Inspiring

  • 5 of 5

A charming and beautiful cottage in the Lakes. About 15 miles from Keswick, away from the traffic and the hustle and bustle of the town centres. Absolutely perfect for families and couples. The homemade cakes and cream tea on arrival were absolutely delicious. Shame about the weather as the garden and barbecue area were brilliant for sitting outside! We will definitely be returning again!

Myself and three friends stayed for a long weekend. Cottage was fab and to a very high standard. Also nice touch of cream scones and fruit loaf on arrival. Ideal location with local pub, shop and restaurants and not far from Keswick and Carlisle

Excellent Lakeland hide-away.

  • 5 of 5

We had a very comfortable and enjoyable week staying at Marlowe Cottage, even the weather was good!

The cottage is very well equiped with everything we required for a week away. We were made to feel at home staright away with cakes and a hamper on arrival. The WiFi was very useful as there, especially with 3 teenage boys!

The village of Caldbeck is attractive, with several small cafes and craft shops. It also has a village pub that serves good pub grub and Jennings beer.

Within walking distance (1.5miles) is the neighbouring village of Hesket Newmarket that has an excellent pub "The Crown" where we sample good beer and pub grub again, we found that we had to book a table for food at the Crown.

Caldbeck is on the edge of the Lake District, but there were excellent walks from the doorstep, or a short car journey away. Keswick, Carlisle and Penrith are in easy reach.

We had a very enjoyable family holiday here.

Lovely Cottage

  • 5 of 5

A really comfortable cottage in a pretty village with convenient shops and walks from the door. Cottage was the most well equiped we have ever stayed in. Really tastefully decorated, loads of hot water, tons of towels and totally comfortable beds. When we arrived the fire had been lite and home baked scones and cakes had been left out for us. Fantastic.

Caldbeck is a charming village nestling in the fells of the Northern Lake District, almost equidistant from Keswick, Penrith, Cockermouth, and Carlisle. The area has outstanding scenery and excellent walking, with Skiddaw, Blencathra and many other fine fells readily accessible. Sheep and ducks roam freely, whilst the 12th century St Kentigern's Church is the resting place of the famous local huntsman, John Peel. Marlowe Cottage is the birthplace of Julia Marlowe, an acclaimed American Shakespearian actress. The welcoming village pub, the Oddfellows Arms, is a traditional Lakeland inn serving good food and Jennings real ales, whilst in the neighbouring village of Hesket Newmarket The Old Crown is famous for its unique real ales from the Hesket Newmarket Brewery. The Priests Mill, an old watermill built by a former Rector of Caldbeck houses the Watermill Cafe overlooking the river, together with interesting shops and workshops.
