El Tinao is a new townhouse in the heart of the unspoiled village of Canar. The house is unique in the village, being the only property that retains a 'tinao' - a feature unique to Berber architecture which connects buildings on both sides of narrow village streets. Built in the traditional Alpujarran style, El Tinao is light and spacious, with high ceilings, chestnut beams and slate stone floors throughout. There are two terraces, one for outdoor dining and a BBQ, the other with sun loungers and a heated spa. Both, of course, have those wonderful soaring views over the village, high above Orgiva and across to the Sierra Lugar. On a clear day, you can see the Rif Mountains of Morocco. It's easy to lose track of time in Canar, but don't worry - you can also see the village clock tower from the terraces. It won't help you with the day of the week, but at least you'll know when to nip out to catch the bread van for croissants in the morning!
Additional facilities: El Tinao has a TV for playing DVD/CDs, and a selection of DVDs, books and games is provided. Canar has 3 bars serving tapas and traditional Alpujarran meals. There is a pharmacy and a well-stocked grocers which even opens on Sundays! Swimming is available in Orgiva for a small charge.
Further afield: Golf - there are 2 courses within 40 minutes of Canar; one on the coast in Salobrena, the other on the near side of Granada city. Skiing - the World Championship resort of Pradollano in the Sierra Nevada is 1 hour 15 minutes from Canar, while paragliding, windsurfing and diving are available in Salobrena and Almunecar on the Costa Tropical. The historic cities of Sevilla and Cordoba are both within reach for day trips, each at approximately 3 hours' drive. Not forgetting, of course, The Alhambra Palace and Generalife gardens in Granada, and we will happily book advance tickets for guests.
Canar is a great base from which to explore La Alpujarra either on foot or by car. The famous GR7 walking route goes right through the village, with the famous spa town of Lanjaron a 2 hour walk to the west, and a glorious 200 foot waterfall (El Dique) marking the half way point to Soportujar in the east (an easy 1.5 hour walk). We provide copies of The Rough Guide to Andalucia, Jeremy Rabjohn's excellent 'Holiday Walks in The Alpujarra' and a detailed walking map which you're free to take with you whenever you're heading out.
'Great house in an excellent location. A peaceful and quite unique experience.' Paul and Debbie Smith, Bishops Wood, Staffs, UK
'A glorious two weeks enjoying the fantastic countryside. Accommodation 1st class!' Steve and Agnes Simpson.
'A majestic palette of sun, stars and scenery from which to paint a masterpiece of a holiday! Thank you. PS Loved the hot tub!' Alan and Alison Taylor.
El Tinao is tucked away off the village square and is the perfect retreat for a quiet relaxing holiday as well as having fantastic views across the valley and towards the coast. We loved opening the shutters in the morning to watch the sun rise over the hills and in the evening relax on the balcony by candlelight with the lovely village of Canar gently lit up against the night sky. We'll miss the double chiming church bell, the bird song and the friendly villagers. The apartment itself was ideal. Very comfortable, well equipped and lovely and cool after a hot day in the mountains. Robin was always to hand to answer questions and nothing was too much trouble. We'll definitely be back!
Wow,I absolutely adored this place.
Robin was the most helpful of hosts, indeed the holiday started with Robin picking me up from the bus from Malaga - I texted him from the bus saying I was about to arrive and he texted me back saying he was in 'the black van following the bus'!
Arriving at the house in Canar, Robin had provided a nice set of provisions for a late arrival as well as the lovely touch of a bottle of Rioja (much needed after a long bus journey from Malaga).
The house is very clean and well organised and has all the amenities you could wish for including a well provisioned kitchen, washing machine and lashings of hot water on tap. The roof terraces have absolutely stunning mountain views, all to be enjoyed with the aid of food and drink from the one terrace or a jacuzzi soak from the other.
Robin makes him self available at all times should you require any information or assistance and there are also various reference books and guides for guest use.
Canar is a very nice village, with friendly people, a decent shop and a lovely languid feel to the whole place. It feels as though you have stepped out of time when you are there and indeed the village clock chimes the hour twice at five minute intervals as if to remind itself that it's part of the real world.
The house is right next to the GR7 trail path, and is well placed for superb mountain walks, a good example being the 90 minute not-to-taxing stroll to the village of Soportujar via an impressive waterfall.
All in all a terrific place and location, in fact I liked it so much I am going back next week to repeat the whole experience!
A perfect base to explore the Sierra Nevadas. The drive from Malaga is straightforward with stunning views as you head up from Orgiva to Canar. We had a warm welcome from Robyn and he left us some wine, beer and supplies. The apartment is lovely and has all mod cons. The hot tub was a real bonus to ease our tired legs after wandering around the beautiful villages. The local shop is superbly well stocked and we had freshly baked bread every morning. Granda and the coast are within an easy drive, for perfect day trips. We had good weather and Robyn's recommendations for restaurants and scenic road trips really made our holiday. My seven year old godson loved the freedom and I would recommend families to stay here. Walkers and gastronomes will find this a perfect base to explore and indulge from. The price was perfect. We will have wonderful memories of our 5 days and I will be looking forward to the summer holidays when I can return again. Thank you Robyn. Karrie , Ailsa and Murray
We had a fantastic week at El Tinao. The accommodation was great - lovely having two balconies, especially the one with the hot tub where you could relax after walking or sightseeing, just sit back and look at the mountains. It was lovely to stay in the heart of the village, with the clock chiming, the dogs barking and life going on around you. Although we cannot speak Spanish we managed to get by with sign language. All the villagers were friendly, especially in the local shop. We had a day in Granada which was fascinating. Robin could not have been more helpful, advising on restaurants, shops, etc., but a special thank you to him for meeting us in the village at 1:00am after our flight was delayed. A wonderful holiday. We will be back. Alice and Andy Mills
I can only reiterate previous reviews and say that this house was a real gem in the sleepiest, but most stunning location imaginable. Robin was such a help in the booking process and whilst we only met him once, on arrival, we knew he was there should we have needed anything or had any problems (which we didn't).
The house has the most glorious views over the mountains from all terraces and windows. We ventured out on four days and spent the other three on the terrace reading and relaxing. There is a good selection of books (which we used) and DVDs, although we didn't use these as we were trying to escape 20th Century technology! It is a nice touch though, especially if the weather isn't good and you want some entertainment.
For the end of March the temps were fine to sit out in the sun by day in just a T-shirt but at night it did get cold. However, there were ample heaters available and a fabulous wood burner which we lit every night. There's a choice of supermarkets in the valley at Orgiva where we found everything we needed to BBQ most evenings.
We found the village delightful (apart from dog mess but this seems to be how it is in Spain) but would not recommend it if you have mobility problems as it is a steep walk from the car park on the edge of the village to the house which is in the most charming narrow street in the middle of the village. The road up to Canar from Orgiva is tortuous (which we loved) with at least 30 switchbacks! Don't let this put you off though as the road itself is good.
We visited Granada, booking a guided 3 hour tour of the Alhambra in advance. It was worth every penny to appreciate it's complex history. We also visited Salobrena on the coast, about an hour away, which was a charming town with castle and a lovely promenade area by the sea. We took the walk to the waterfall at Dique one afternoon which was just fantastic, but again, it was quite steep with rough terrain in places - just to warn you if you think it will be an easy stroll.
I would most certainly recommend this house to anyone who wants a taste of the real Spain. A lovely house, in a beautiful location with an owner who obviously loves the area and wants his guests to do the same. Thank you Robin for a wonderful week, and a special thanks for telling us that the clocks went forward in Spain too - we could have cut it very close at the airport had it not been for your text!
If I could give this property six stars, I would!
We chose this house and area for a more relaxing second week of a two week stay in Spain. From the moment we booked Robin explained about the village, the house and the local area. He met us as agreed and helped with our luggage, showed us around the house and explained how everything worked. He gave us a pack that included, details on the weather during our stay, areas of interest and recommeded places to eat. He texted us on our second day to make sure everything was ok and offered to bring provisions if we needed the. A perfect host.
The house is on three levels, a bedroom/bathroom on the ground, bedroom/bathroom, lounge/dinning room, kitchen on the middle and washing area and two terraces on the top. It is well equipped and has plenty of towels and even bathrobes for use with the hot tub. The terrace areas have amazing views and have plentyfof space to eat/barbaque, sit/lounge or make full use of the wonderful hot tub/jaccuzi.
The village is wonderful and although it is not on the flat it is very easy to walk around and experience the real spain. The locals are so friendly and are eager to chat and while away the time with you. There are 3 bars, one of which is a restaurant and they offer free tapas with every alcoholic drink ordered.
The local town of Orgiva a short drive away has everything you will need to experience the real spain, Cafe bars, restraunts and supermarkets. Again this town is a lovely size for just wandering around and sightseeing.
Within an hours drive are some lovely villages that still retain the magical charm of whitewashed spanish villages clinging to the side of the mountains. There are beaches close by and the city of Granada only an hours drive away.
The area is just breathtaking and has some of the most stunning scenery I have seen in spain. If you like to walk and explore the natural environment this is definately the place for you.
I will forever remember sitting in the hot tub at midnight, watching the stars while drinking champagne and listening to the church clock chime TWICE?.
Truly magical Adele and Steve
Canar is the first village of the High Alpujarra, overlooking the local market town of Orgiva. Just below the Sierra Nevada Natural Park, and on the famous GR7 walking route, Canar is only an hour from The Alhambra Palace and Generalife Gardens in Granada.
