The new links between Knock and Girona (Barcelona), Hahn (Frankfurt), Bergamo (Milan) and Beauvais (Paris) will bring to 14 the number of Ryanair routes flying to and from Ireland West Airport.

Ryanair adding to their extensive services into Ireland from March 2012.

It will now be possible to fly from the above departure points directly in to Knock Airport. Knock is approx 60 mins drive to Cuach Cottage.

Interesting 'Cuach Cottage': Constructed from local stone using local skills and dry bedding technique. Some internal walls are 3 ft. wide whilst others are 2 ft.

It has a conventional pitched slated roof which is now highly insulated.

To the rear, their remains the shell of a stone constructed sheep's pen. Livestock would have been housed close to the dwelling in bygone days.

The fireplace is 'inglenook' type, however, this has been converted to suit a woodburning stove. In days gone by all family meals were cooked over this fireplace.

Local harvested turf was the only source of fuel . The turf fire would sit directly on the floor in traditional manner using all the skills necessary to maintain it lighting 24 hours per day. Most homesteads had their own plot of bogland. Plots till exist to this day.

We have installed a hand crafted entrance door, 1/2 by 1/2 last year made by a local craftsman, thanks Pat.

Interior fixtures, some from Count De Vesci's estate are present in 'Cuach Cottage'

About Liam or Marian Young

Pic. taken March 2014 Gurteen Beach, near Roundstone. Liam & Marian from Dublin and now residing in Co. Wexford, on the East Coast of Ireland purchased this beautiful vernacular cottage in 2009. We have holidayed in Connemara since we were little children, many moons ago! Marian actually did the Donkey Derby, year on year in Roundstone, a nearby village of great natural beauty. This is our away from home piece of heaven, which we cherish and now love to share with visitors.

We operate a retail business in Gorey, Co. Wexford. See f. thestoreroomgorey. Visiting this site will reveal a lot about our ethos. Marian's eye for detail is everywhere to be seen. Enjoy !

Liam or Marian Young purchased this cottage in 2009

Why Liam or Marian Young chose Connemara

'Les Lacs du Connemara' Michel Sardou !! Cuach cottage has loads of history and was originally thatched. It stands on 4 acres of Connemara terrain, has a beautiful fresh water river running alongside, which is full of trout / salmon in season. From our rustic garden seat you can view the Otter, Mink, Badger, Cuckoo, [ April - June ] and all the while the majestic 12 Ben Mountain Range forming the backdrop. We are in an idealic location, beside some of the most beautiful beaches in the world, yet right in the heart of Connemara.

If you want to get away from it all this is positively it !

Paul Henry and sister Grace Henry painted many of their most famous works literally from our front garden !!!

Its been our pleasure to hosted many dignitaries, Lords & Ladies, and family guests in recent years, literally travelling from all corners of the world, They have found 'Cuach Cottage' to be an absolute delight, simple yet all embracing !

What makes this cottage unique

We have our own fresh water well, essential in Connemara !! Our cottage stands on 4 acres of Connemara Terrain which has been designated an area of special beauty and is therefore protected and preserved under Irish Government Warrant IE SPA. The garden areas are fenced off into many paddocks. Connemara ponies and sheep graze closeby.

Turning left out of our cottage gate you will find some of the most beautiful scenery in the world. Nothing but beautiful Connemara terrain for 13 Kilometers, just amazing mooreland and lake district and then Ballynahinch Castle for that must have luncheon !! Enjoy Liam & Marian.

We are away from everything yet close to the Capital Town of Clifden, 4 Kilometers to Supermarkets, Fine Dining, Theatre, indeed everything you could wish for.

Cuach Cottage is quiet and peaceful, yet if you need assistance it is within easy reach.

Traditional cottage but with modern facilities

  • 5 of 5

Beautiful cottage in quiet location but not too far from all the amenities of Clifden. Very clean and comfortable with a real feeling of being in someone's home not just a holiday rental property. Would definitely recommend to friends and family.

The Cuach Cottage

  • 5 of 5

We had the most incredible time at this little cottage. Liam was helpful and friendly, and very responsive to our needs. The cottage itself was just a dream. Close enough to Clifden, Galway, The Bens, and even the Aran Islands that we were never at a loss for things to do, it was also perfect for just laying around and enjoying a picnic in the backyard, watching the sheep by the brook and taking in the incredible view. To top it all off, it was also spotlessly clean and tastefully decorated. You won't be disappointed with this rental.

You are very welcome to return, Very best wishes for the future, Liam & Marian.

A Connemara Getaway

  • 5 of 5

We had a wonderful stay. The cottage is warm and charming and the location is pure Connemara. We loved it and Liam and Maria made the whole experience easy and pleasant. We fished most days and had enough luck to make it even more special. We had 10-12 hits, hooked 3 including 1 good sized brown trout, and landed one brown trout which we released. We also got great pictures of an otter that visited us on occasion. But the best part of the fishing was the setting – to be able to stand out in the that beautiful environment with the Twelve Bens as a backdrop was just amazing. We hope to get back soon when we need our next Connemara "fix"!

Owner's Response: Thank you Robert. Great to understand you had a wonderful time at Cuach Cottage". Look forward to your early return. Please forward pics. of the very elusive Otter. Marian has spotted him/ her many times, [ When she was at the washing line ] but these creatures are so shy that any movement will send them into hiding, Best regards, Liam.

tastefully renovated cottage

  • 4 of 5

This tastefully renovated and inviting cottage looks exactly as depicted in the photographs - except that it is significantly darker. Altogether we found it impeccable, even if - with utilities unnecessarily charged extra - a little on the expensive side. It is located beautifully and very close to Clifden. We especially loved the beaches around Roundstone and the wonderful Seafood Pub there, as well as the restaurant overlooking the bay at Ardagh Hotel.

Owner's Response: Antje, Marian and myself are delighted you and Richard enjoyed your stay in our holiday home.

Cosy, calm and wild.

  • 5 of 5

The cottage is perfectly situated close to Clifden (10 min by car) but lost enough that you are never bothered by a car going by in the middle of the night. It is cosy, peaceful and inviting and surrounded by bogland. The landscape is breathtaking and the play between the light and clouds is spectacular. The house is a 'home away from home' with all, if not more, than what you would expect to find if it was your own holiday home. Liam and Marian were wonderful with providing advice on what to do around the area and were very reactive whenever we had a question.

Wonderful place to come to with children.

Don't forget to bring a fishing rod, a good rain jacket and some gumboots (wellies).

Galway. Monique,Marian & myself look forward to welcoming Alex, your good self and family again, perhaps next year !! Best wishes, Liam & Marian

Amazing location and very well presented cottage

  • 5 of 5

Just the right distance from lovely towns like Clifden and Roundstone and the peninsulas, without the long driving involved if you would stay on one of the peninsulas. Lovely original but well restored cottage, excellent facilities, beds and care by the owners and housekeeper. Tasteful interior and marvellous views and garden.

The river is stocked with fresh trout is a recognised salmon run. The fishing rights in bygone days belonged to the neighbouring Ballynahinch Castle. Ballinahinch currently provides some of the best fresh water fishing & shoots available in Europe. Boundary fencing provides a break between the river and immediate garden. Pony trecking is very popular and excellent facilities are within easy reach. A beautiful walk to 'Lough Fadda', ie. long lake, is outside and towards the right of Cuach Cottage. This is an inspiring and very peaceful hours walk before dinner. There is also excellent fishing here, however, a license is required. Rambling within the confines of 'Cuach Cottage' is a must, as it sits on 4 acres, or simply sitting by the river reading a book, enjoying the scenery, and wildlife. The CUCKOO arrives in April, enjoy his song. Bring your sketch pad, you wont be disappointed. Rustic seating is provided alongside the river, as is an 8 seater patio table close by.
