A luxurious cottage with 5 bedrooms right on the waters edge.

White Strand Lodge is a high end luxury holiday home in Derrygimla, 4 miles from Clifden, Connemara, in the West of Ireland. The house is located right on the waters edge, overlooking magnificent Mannin Bay and has some of the best views available in Connemara. We also offer a catered option to suit your specific needs.

There are exceptional sea and mountain views from all rooms, so you can admire the scenery from the moment you open your eyes. In the evenings, you can sit outside on the patio and enjoy the famous Connemara sunsets over Mannin Bay and the Twelve Bens mountains. Enjoy a lobster barbecue and relax while listening to the murmuring of the waves and an occasional cry from the seagulls. For those who are looking for a golf holiday, Connemara Championship Golf Course is less than 3 miles from the front door. Pony trekking, walking, cycling, fishing, and many more activities are available within a very short distance of the White Strand Lodge.

Catered option:

There is an option to rent the White Strand Lodge on a catered basis. This will include a daily full housekeeping service, full breakfast at your convenience every morning and a four or five course evening meal at your convenience. We will happily prepare luxury picnic hampers,lunch and afternoon tea if you so wish. With this service you can also avail of fishing trips, local tours and the very best of local knowledge as often or as little as you like.

Dining and Shopping:

There are a number of good restaurants available in Clifden, which is only 4 miles from the house. There are some lovely shops for the shopping enthusiast including antiques clothing and artisan foods. Roundstone is 8 miles away and a trip to O’Dowds Pub and Restaurant is a favourite especially with the sun going down over the Harbour. Freshly caught lobster can be bought at Bunowen and the Connemara Smoke House has delicious smoked salmon and tuna available. The crab from the Connemara Smoke House is to die for and should be enjoyed back at the House with a nice glass of White wine.

Horses and Ponies:

If you are interested in horses and ponies then you will have heard of the famous Connemara Pony Show. Ballyconneely and Derrygimla are at the heart of the Connemara Pony world and in the Summer months it seems as if every field has a young foal and mare lapping up the Connemara sunshine. Horse riding is available at Errislannin Riding Centre which is 10 minutes away by car.

Walking, Sightseeing and Fishing: There is a never ending amount of walks along the coast and inland through Roundstone Bog, up by the Clifden River and into the woods at Ballynahinch. For the more active the Twelve Bens are extremely popular and while you will need to be fit to get to the top the views are stunning.

A trip to Inishbofin Island, the Connemara National Park, Kylemore Abbey and excursions in the Maam Valley the scene of the location of the films “The Field” and “The Quiet Man” are all within easy reach. The list of activities is truly endless.

The surrounding area is renowned for fishing for salmon and sea trout, and arrangements can easily be made at a number of nearby breath taking locations.

About Fred

Our family bought the White Strand Lodge in 1984 as a small three roomed cottage with an outside toilet. From that moment on the four Gilligans, as we were then spent every opportunity at this very special place. Two more Gilligans were added to the family and in 1987 - 1988 we did some serious renovations. Every school holiday and every Summer was spent in Connemara exploring, sailing golfing, fishing, searching the rock pools for crabs... the list is endless. All four children will safely say that it has given us the happiest memories which we cherish forever. In 2005 work commenced on a big renovation project which has turned the White Strand Lodge into a luxurious yet classical Connemara Cottage. We are truly delighted to share our most special place with a few select people every year.

What makes this house unique

No where else will you find wonderful seclusion, the ocean at your doorstep, peace, tranquility and yet all modern conveniences at you finger tips. If you need groceries the shops are a mere five minutes away but when your in the house with the fire lit and enjoying a nice bottle of wine then you will be far removed from everyday life.

The White Strand Lodge is located on the shores of magnificent Mannin Bay and overlooks the Coral Strand, also known as the White Strand from which the house takes its name. The village of Ballyconneely is less than a mile away and Clifden the capital of Connemara is less than 6 miles away. Within easy distance of the house is the Connemara Golf links, Roundstone, Kylemore Abbey and the access to Inisboffin and the Aran Islands. The vibrant City of Galway is just over an hour away by car. Also close by is Erislannin Manor with it world class Connemara Ponies. There is an abundance of walks and beautiful cycles from the front door of the house.

Golf: Connemara Championship Golf Course is less than 8 minutes away by car and is home to 27 of the finest holes on the West Coast of Ireland. It was Peter Allis who said that “if Connemara were on the west coast of the United Kingdom it would surely host the British Open”. If you are a golf enthusiast you will love the course.

  • All of the bathrooms are tiled with beautiful Italian limestone, have top of the range showers and there is an abundance of hot water even when the house is fully occupied. In the Master en-suite there is a large bath in which to relax after a long day out walking, golfing or any of the many other activities within minutes of the White Strand Lodge.

  • Master bedroom The master bedroom is located upstairs and is en suite. Waking up in the morning to the sun rising over the Twelve Bens, falling across the shallows of the white strand and into the bedroom is the perfect way to start any day. Other upstairs bedrooms Along the corridor is a single room, a twin room and a large double room all of which have fantastic views over Mannin Bay and out onto the mighty Atlantic Ocean. These three bedrooms share a family bathroom. Downstairs bedroom The fifth bedroom is downstairs at the west end of the house and is en suite and looks directly out onto the hydrangea garden and over Mannin Bay.

Wonderful Coastal Cottage

Fantastic cottage in a wonderful coastal location. The cottage layout makes the most of it's position with stunning views from the main living and outside seating areas. Close enough to the town of Clifden for supplies and the odd pint, yet far enough out to provide that 'get-away from it all' feeling. Excellent walks along the beaches either side of the cottage and family evenings around the dinner table were the highlights of our holiday.

What a lovely place!

Our family of four and another family of three (3 girls under 12) vacationed at the White Strand Lodge for a week in July. It was quite hard to leave! The owner was very prompt and thorough in answering emails and provided us with good information about the house and its vicinity. The house itself overlooks the water and is so lovely and spacious. We especially loved the large kitchen and living area with the ocean view and the long pine table. The house was equipped with all that we needed, even wetsuits that the girls enjoyed using one evening for a swim! The local area is stunning in its scenery and the people quite friendly. We never tired of seeing the sheep and ponies as we drove by! We enjoyed the local pony show, riding at Erislannan Manor, eating and shopping in Clifden and Roundstone and bicycling on Inishbofin. Though it felt somewhat rural, we were never lacking for things to do. It was a lovely, peaceful week. We highly recommend White Strand Lodge and will remember our first trip to Ireland fondly.

The most perfect holiday home in Connemara

We are veterans of holiday rentals, finding it infinitely more relaxing than a hotel.

White Strand Lodge combines the luxury and facilities of a top hotel (save for the room service!) and has the feel of a home that is loved and has witness many great family holidays.

The views from almost every room were breathtaking, and the photos on the website struggle to capture the magic of the location. Each room is luxurious without being fussy and the relaxed atmosphere is tangible. You do get the impression the owners are happy to share their house, music, books, bikes, beach kit and DVDs.

The whole experience, from the initial contact with the owners, through to the meet and greet and then the handing back of the keys all was does with efficiency and grace.

The house was spotlessly clean and comfortable and deceptive big. The living, dining and outdoor spaces are perfect for families. The local guide provided by the owners has all the details you need in relation to the local site, restaurants and must dos.

This is the perfect base to explore the west coast and if you were as lucky as we were with the weather it could not be more perfect. The beach is a short stroll and hours were spent just watching the tides come in and out.


I cannot recommend this house highly enough... I want to negotiate a timeshare!!

Amazing Stay at the White Strand Lodge

stayed at the White Strand Lodge with my boyfriend and his family for New Years Eve just gone. It is a truly stunning spot with the most wonderful mountain and sea views. The House slept all 8 of us comfortably and even his 89 year old grandmother was able to manage as there is an ensuite bedroom downstairs. We lit the two fires every evening and the house was so cosy and snug it was great. (maybe the central heating helped a little here too!) We went for some great walks out by Slyne Head and along the beaches of Mannin Bay, which while cold was very enjoyable and energising. My boyfriend played golf with his Dad and Brothers at the Connemara Golf Links and they seemed happy out while there were plenty of nice little shops in Clifden to occupy me. Its back to Dubai now for me but I really hope we get to visit Connemara and stay at the White Strand Lodge again very soon!. This house would be perfect for a romantic weekend or a family holiday! Five stars!!
