Scuba diving and snorkeling:
The Riviera maya is home to some of the most unequalled dive sites in the world. The great Mayan Reef is the second longest living barrier in the world. It start´s at Cancun an extends just offshore along the eastern tip of Yucatan Peninsula and all the way down to Honduras. From many towns the reef is only a short swim from the beach, making for excellent snorkeling without the need of a boat or special equipment. There are a variety of open waters available in Playa del carmen, Cozumel, Akumal, Puerto Morelos. Wether it is your first time, or you are an experienced diver, you may choose between many excellent instructors who will make sure you have memorable underwater experiences. A very special dive can take place in the 'cenotes', caverns and spring-fed lagoons, its cristal lear waters will delight amateurs and experienced divers alike. Caves and cavern diving requires expertise and special equipment, and can be a wonderful challenge for certified and experienced cavern divers.
Mayan Ruins:
There are hundreds of Mayan ruins around Quintana Roo, but these are the major sites.
Coba ruins are hidden away in the jungle. Coba was a large ancient Mayan city and much of it is unrestored. The ruins that are restored include the ball court and a large pyramid. Unspoiled, easy to get to, and uncrowded.
Tulum ruins are small but easy to get to from Cancun or Playa del Carmen. They are unique in being the only coastal Mayan ruin.
Chichen Itza ruins are the most famous of the Mexican Mayan ruins and definitely the most touristy and crowded. However, Chichen Itza is an impressive, mystical, inspiring place. Hundreds throng here every Spring and Fall equinox to watch the shadow snake ascend or descend the steps of the largest pyramid. Major structures are Kukulcan pyramid, site of the Equinox solar phenomena, Temple of the Warriors, Temple of the Jaguars, El Mercado, Caracol, also known as the Observatory and the Ball Court (the largest in Mesoamerica).
