The Old Forge Lodge was in the perfect location for us visiting family on the island. We had a lovely weekend, the sun even shone down on us, and the accommodation provided a perfect base to return to each evening to rest and relax. We found all the facilities to be of a good quality and in very good condition. We will definitely consider staying there again when we visit Mersea Island in the future.
Mersea Island is situated on the North Essex coast only 9 miles from Colchester. The island is famous for its seafood and especially its oysters which are of world renown and can be enjoyed in abundance at The Company Shed and the West Mersea Oyster bar.
Mersea is located in the estuaries of the River Blackwater and the River Colne and these waters provide excellent waters for yacht and dinghy sailing. Windsurfing and kite surfing are also very popular here. For quieter activities there are beautiful walks and 12 miles of seawalls with wonderful views and wildlife for those interested in birdwatching.
Colchester is the nearest town to Mersea Island, only 9 miles away, and is Britain's oldest recorded town. It has one of the finest examples of a Square Stone Keep Castle in the country and is definitely worth a visit. Colchester Zoo is also a fabulous place to spend a day with children.
