150 FT TO BEACH! 2 BR TROPICAL RETREAT + USE OF KAYAK $149/NT

Captain Cook House Rental Photos and Description

South Kona retreat near ocean, 2bd/2ba sleeps 4 + Studio

Kona Dreams is a private retreat in Captain Cook, 35 miles south of Kona Airport. An easy drive on highways 19 & 11 along the dramatic coastline takes you past Kailua-Kona, to history rich Keauhou, Kealakekua, Captain Cook, and Honaunau, through the Big Island’s fertile agricultural region, where coffee grows alongside macadamia, cacao, vanilla beans, avocado, and an endless feast of tree ripened fruit.

A clearly marked turn takes you from an elevation of 1,100 ft through the quiet Kona Paradise community, right down to sea level and the ocean.

Park your car and walk for less than 60 seconds to the ocean. Look for turtles or even a monk seal resting on the beautiful black lava pebble beach.

This home was designed to capture every breeze. The interior is decorated with artwork the owners collected during their travels around the Pacific Rim. A spacious living area is equipped with a new flat screen TV, media player, guidebooks, and leisure reading. Comfortable furniture invites you to relax under the cathedral ceiling supported by solid ohia logs.

The airy master bedroom features a king size bed made of local ohia wood and has a separate walk-in closet, master bath, and a private lanai. The guest bedroom has a full bath and a lanai of its own. The kitchen is equipped with everything to make enjoyable meals from scratch, with complimentary Kona coffee to start your morning. While you enjoy sitting on the shaded lanai, watch the tropical sunset or look for breaching whales.

You may do laundry onsite, beach towels are provided. Wifi, high-speed broadband, and free telephone calls to the mainland US, Canada, and Guam keep you wired and connected.

The house sits on a lovingly landscaped lot with flowering orchids, plumeria trees, coconut palms. Feel free to pick luscious mangoes and limes in season.

The bay beyond the beach is well known for scenic snorkeling and excellent scuba diving. In the garage you will find a beach locker full of snorkel gear, water toys, beach furniture, umbrella and cooler to enjoy during your visit. Or take the kayak out for a paddle and look for dolphins swimming in the bay.

Detailed information about these and many other activities are available to guests, just ask.

A separate living area with a full bath that sleeps up to 3 more guests is occasionally available. Rates do vary depending on season and number of guests.

The excellent Kona Community Hospital is 18 miles north on Highway 11.

It Was Perfect

  • 5 of 5
The house is awesome! very comfortable even on the hottest day and comes with every thing you need, the view is great, it was nice and quiet just the sound of the nearby surf on the beach, birds and the occasional gecko chirping, we were there to explore as much of the Island as possible so the location was perfect and the ice chest came in handy for our daily trips. I cant wait to go back again

Very quiet and private

  • 4 of 5
My husband and I, along with my Father in Law, spent 10 nights here in February. The house is huge, open and airy. It was very clean and well equipped. It was a perfect retreat for the 3 of us. We enjoyed the lanai every morning and evening. The sun sets right off the little beach that was easily accessed from the home. We took advantage of the propane bbq most nights along with the snorkeling gear. We wanted to take the kayak out but the surf was rough on the day we planned to head out. We felt very safe here and loved the central location. It was an easy drive north to Captain Cook or Kona/Kailua and same going south to the volcano or black sands beach. We loved our stay here. Just note, if you want AC, this is not the place. We didn't need it so it was fine for us. If you want daily maid service, this isn't for you either. The wireless worked great for us, the previous renters had some problems. I would come back here again.

Great house in a remote location!

  • 4 of 5
There are a lot of great things about this rental! Heidi was lovely and responsive. The neighborhood is very quiet and peaceful! The house is thoughtfully designed and comfortable. There's a huge living/family room surrounded by a wraparound porch. Each bedroom also has access to it and you can see the sunset over the water.

To get to the house from the main highway, you go down a long and VERY steep road. The house is basically one row back from the beach. The views are still nice, but they're broken-up some by the houses between you and the water.

It had a lot of things for a rental. There was sunscreen, bug spray, condiments, etc...all in the house. Great clothes line set-up for drying things. The kitchen is generally well stocked, complete with things you don't usually find in rental houses like crock pots and blenders. We really enjoyed using the grill.

Despite the house having a surprising number of amenities, there were also some things missing that seemed odd. There wasn't a hair dryer. There wasn't any sauce pan for cooking (plenty of frying pans and really big pots).

The beach is a very short walk down the street. The beach was almost always empty...a lovely place for morning coffee or an evening glass of wine. It is NOT a swimming beach. The Revealed travel book calls it one of the most violent beaches in the state...and having tried to take a quick swim in it (in January, maybe summer is different), I agree. Not a good plan.

One thing to note that I wish I had realized is the house does not have air conditioning. In general, this isn't a problem because you can open up all the windows and screen doors and Hawaii weather is pretty wonderful. However, there were a few times we would have appreciated AC to get the house a little cooler for sleeping and knock out some of the humidity. If you're warm-natured at all, you might want to consider this point carefully. It's also worth noting that the water pressure is REALLY poor. It was definitely a challenge to rinse shampoo out of your hair and even filling the coffee pot from the kitchen sink seemed to take forever.

Finally, the last thing I didn't realize when selecting the house is the location – it was more remote than I thought it would be. There's not a lot to do on the island that is a short drive from this house. To get into Captain Cook proper (where there's a small grocery store and restaurant choices) it's about a 30 min drive north from this house.

Owner's Response: Aloha Jennifer, thank you for your thoughtful comments. You were wonderful guests. The saucepan was in the wrong drawer and is back where it belongs. A hairdryer will be added to the master bathroom. We appreciate the feedback concerning the water pressure - our plumber will solve the problem this month. In Hawai'i, ocean conditions vary with the tide, the weather, and the season. Next time you visit our beautiful beach, the water may be smooth as glass and full of beachgoers swimming, snorkeling, and kayaking. Mahalo, Heidi and Quentin.

This was by far our best VRBO and we have stayed at quite a few. The house and area and all amenities were exactly as described. The owner was very helpful with restaurants, the area and beach toys and other amenities. I would also say this house had the nicest landscaping in the area but that doesn't affect your stay anyway but shows the overall tidiness and organization of the owner. The entire area was very scenic and we could see the sunset from both lanai's. Make sure you check out the nicest, closest sand beach nearby which is about a 5 minute drive. It is Hookena Beach Park and it is great for swimming, snorkeling, or kayaking. There are a lot of locals there so you know it is good.

Where to begin???

  • 5 of 5
Based on the prior reviews of Pebble Beach, and our initial and subsequent communication with the owner, we had certain expectations of this rental. We are pleased to say that our 9 days at Pebble Beach far exceeded what we had hoped for. First, Mikee was very prompt and pleasant in her communication prior to our arrival, and once there, Ann simply could not have been more helpful and gracious. Having lived in Kona Paradise for 25 years, Ann is exceptionally knowledgeable about the entire Kona/Kohala coast and has many excellent resources available.

As for the home itself: Perfect. Well planned architecturally, with a lanai off each bedroom, large living area, tasteful and functional furnishings, and an extraordinarily well-stocked kitchen. The bed was very comfortable, and the ocean breezes were just right for a good night's sleep. The whole place is immaculate, the grounds esthetically appealing, and Pebble Beach and the coastal trail are just a short walk away.

I am writing this review from another VRBO rental on the Kohala coast, which is quite adequate, but certainly not in the same class as Pebble Beach. My wife and I agree that Ann has spoiled us for any other place on the island, and we are looking forward to returning to Ann's place in the future. We could not have been more pleased, and highly recommend it to others.

Relaxing, enjoyable stay at Christmas time

  • 5 of 5
My wife and I stayed 8 nights at this house at Pebble Beach, and had a very enjoyable, relaxing time. The house is very comfortable and roomy, and was decorated for Christmas. You can hear the waves washing on the beach in the distance, and it was a very quiet, secluded spot. Ann loaned us the kayak and we made several trips along the coast and did a lot of snorkeling. The paved road down to the beach from Highway 11 is very steep, but we didn't have any problems going up and down. We would highly recommend this house to anyone who is looking for a relaxing stay in a remote location away from the city and traffic.
