SUNSET COTTAGE

Rouffignac St Cernin Cottage Rental Photos and Description

1 bedroom cottage in beautiful surroundings, near to all the tourist sites.

Welcome to our 2 lovingly restored holiday cottages. At the end of a quiet lane, nestled on the side of a valley, there is no traffic, no noise and no distractions. Despite these tranquil surroundings, we are still close to all the main site seeing attractions at Sarlat, Les Eyzies, Perigueux, Beynac and Domme. Originally barns, both properties have been recently renovated and are well equipped to provide you with everything you will need for your stay. Newly decorated and furnished, they have a bright and light feel, while still retaining some of the original oak beams and woodwork. However, what makes this property really special are the views. Sitting on the terrace with a glass of wine on a summers evening, watching the spectacular sunsets over the valley and the chateau, will give you holiday memories to take away and cherish forever.

Guestbook comments from the owner

We came to do a spot of house hunting in November and after a couple of weeks soul searching in the UK, we realised we needed to come back again. And we came back here, which tells you all you need to know really.

Clean, comfortable, warm and perfectly situated for either business or pleasure, or a bit of both in our case.

Scooby is the friendliest pooch in France and Steve's wealth of knowledge was very useful.

No doubt we'll be back again before long. Thanks again

Homey atmosphere with a flair.

  • 5 of 5
Lovely apartment with artistic touches and lots of charm. Highly picturesque setting, conveniently located for a huge assortment of fascinating day trips, friendly neighbors whom we loved speaking to in our intermediate french. Great thought given to the details: comfy large bed, good shower pressure, even a wide choice of English-language TV choices. You'll feel right at home, especially if you're British or American.

Holiday in the Dordogne

  • 4 of 5
We thoroughly enjoyed our holiday. The Gite was surrounded by wonderful views. It was clean and reasonably comfortable, the bed was very comfortable. Thank you Karen for the clean linen and towels for second week.
We found plenty to do with many interesting sights to see.
As stated by many before the 'Layotte Restaurant' is a must to visit. Wonderful environment, excellent food and service and very reasonable.
I have to mention Snoopy, I'm a cat lover, not dogs, but I tried to pack him in my case but he wouldn't come.
Thank you Karen and Steve for your hospitality.,

Little piece of paradise

  • 5 of 5
From the beginning of our enquiry, right through to the departure time, we were made most welcome by the owners Karen and Steven. This was the holiday we most needed and we could not have picked a better place to relax and wind down. The property was everything we thought it would be and a bit more. Everything was as it was advertised and the gite was celan and well maintained. The village is a 5 minute walk away, there is a good selection of essential shops and places to buy food and groceries and whilst we had a car, fuel. The restaurants are good and we loved the Sunday food market. With such friendly local people, it made it easy to start conversations with strangers. The area is blessed with many walking trails and road walks to nearby other villages such as Plazac and Fleurac which are around 5 kilometres away. The accomodations provided to us were clean and comfortable and we had what we needed. The owners are a good source of local knowledge and give generously of their time to help out with great places to go to off the normal tourist track.
When you stay in this place get to appreciate the quiet and beautiful late afternoon/evening sunsets. The loveable family dog, Scooby, will soon adopt you and possibly you will adopt the baby chickens like we did. It makes for a very down to earth visit that suddenly comes to an end with a little sadness, but fond memories nevertheless.
Thank you to Karen and Steven for being such great hosts. We can only but recommend your property.

Owner's Response: Thank you so much for such a brilliant review, we both really enjoyed meeting you, it’s great that you enjoyed your time here with us. And it’s a testament to our village and the surrounding area that you don't necessarily need a car, as you didn't for your first week here. We know you walked (a lot !!) and explored the surrounding area on foot and maybe saw things that you might have missed in the car.

And we can't thank you enough for looking after our teenage chickens on the nights that we weren't around. You'll be pleased to know they are doing great, they go to bed when we tell them and are behaving impeccably..............(not at all like human teenagers)

We know you didn't get to see everything you wanted to, so hopefully we'll see you again very soon for another holiday.

Warmest and best wishes, Karen and Steve

Great base for touring the area

  • 4 of 5
We enjoyed a great week at Rouffignac despite rainy weather. The apartment, a barn conversion, is cosy and comfortable with all basic equipment necessary for a self-catering stay. A welcoming bottle of local wine was a nice surprise along with eggs and preserves.
Central heating kept us warm on unseasonably cool nights and satellite TV with English channels or a good collection of books were available for evenings.
The 1-bedroom apartment is a good size for 2 people - perhaps 500 sq.ft. - with a king bed and kitchen/living room combination. Patio dining/sunbathing extends the space during warm months.
Karen and Steve's place is a few minutes walk from a small village and very quiet - it offer a great view across the valley! Rouffignac offers basic stores and a small supermarket along with a couple of restaurants (which we did not sample). Karen is happy to offer advice if needed.
I'd say a car is essential for a stay here - but a multitude of interesting places are within 30 minutes to an hours drive. It's a beautiful and historically rich area which more than filled our week. It's full of prehistoric caves and medieval chateaus along with gorgeous river valley settings.
We'd be happy to return - I'd recommend at least 2 weeks to really explore the area

In the heart of the Perigord Noir, the property is a ten minute stroll from the village of Rouffignac, where you will find everything you need, including a typical French market every Sunday.

Ideally situated, the cottage is nestled on the side of a valley, with spectacular views of the chateau and the surrounding countryside. A short drive will take you to all the tourist sites, including the famous medieval town of Sarlat, the caves at Les Eyzies and Montignac, walk the cobbled streets of the ancient Roman city of Perigueux and visit one of the many chateaux near Beynac and Domme. For the more adventurous, take a canoe trip down the beautiful River Vezere or enjoy the views from the skies in a hot air balloon.

And at the end of a long day site seeing, relax in what is quite possibly one of the most tranquil places on earth. Known as the land of 1000 chateaux and the birth place of modern man, the Dordogne is a truly magical place. We hope to see you soon.
