Islington Apartment Rental Photos and Description

Stylish living in a quiet flat on a lovely garden square. Civilised and pretty.

2015 is going fast, so book now, as repeat customers are lining up to fill the diary -- a sure sign that we're doing something right! (Just check out our super reviews, below.)

We prefer to book full-weeks only, beginning and ending on Saturdays, and that is how the HomeAway reservation will handle your enquiries. HOWEVER, please note that we frequently make exceptions, and so PLEASE ASK if your needs don't conform to that kind of schedule, even if HomeAway won't take the booking on the automated system !!

For larger parties, this property can often be paired with our two-bedroom flat in the same building: HomeAway property 417134.

We're in London's historic Gibson Square, which is an oasis of calm just off of Islington's lively Upper Street, where you'll find literally dozens of upscale bars, restaurants and shops. Our neighbourhood is friendly, safe and immaculate, making the flat a perfect fit for a woman traveling alone, for a professional here on assignment working late hours -- for anyone, in fact, who appreciates a civilized lifestyle. We're convenient to public transport running quickly to all the sights and tourist attractions you'll want to visit in this great city. The flat is on the first floor of a Regency terraced town house (2nd floor American). Travel back in time with us -- all sides of the Square, and the park inside it, look just as they did when George III was busy losing the Colonies. This quiet, elegant, comfortable holiday rental flat features very high ceilings, cornice mouldings, and a brand new first-class renovation. The fully-equipped kitchen is a dream!

Perfect WiFi, and Sky TV including the extra cost Sports and Movies options. Sleeps just 2.

Those Wonderful Double-Decker Buses: Several key buses stop just three minutes from the house, giving convenient scenic access to all the museums, tourist sights, markets and historic neighbourhoods you'll want to see on your vacation, cheaper and often quicker than the tube. Unlike in most cities, here the bus is your friend, with its dedicated express lanes and incredibly low cost -- just £1.30 with the Oyster Card you'll get the day you arrive! Take the splendid double-decker #4 red bus to Sadlers Wells, St Paul’s Cathedral, the Millennium Bridge to the Tate Modern and Shakespeare’s Globe Theatre, Fleet Street, Oxford Street shopping, Covent Garden and the West End theatres, and finally Waterloo Bridge across the River Thames to the South Bank (National Theatre, Royal Festival Hall, Queen Elizabeth Hall, British Film Institute, Hayward Gallery, the London Eye), Imax, Waterloo Station, and the Old Vic. (All that in barely half an hour’s ride!) Other buses from this neighbourhood have similarly-stunning itineraries

The Tube, and the Rail System: It's just a 7-minute walk to the Angel Islington tube station (Northern Line, Zone 1) for quick connections throughout London – just 1 stop to the King's Cross / St Pancras transport hub for further tube connections, the Eurostar to Paris, and mainline trains to Scotland, the North of England, and Gatwick and Luton Airports. And yes, King's Cross does have a brick wall bearing the sign 'Platform 9 3/4'. It's a 10-minute walk to the Highbury & Islington tube station (Victoria Line) connecting to the Stansted (Airport) Express, and looping through Central London to Victoria Station with connections to all lines. Arsenal's Emirates football stadium is at Highbury, as are National Rail's overground North London and Northern City Lines. Canary Wharf, the Financial District and the 2012

The Olympics venues are quickly accessed from here. Heathrow Airport, by the way, is best accessed by the 15-minute Heathrow Express train, which you get from Paddington Station, less than 20 minutes away.

Your Holiday Rental Flat in London: Contact us now to book your London vacation! We're convenient to all the tourist sights, and you can enjoy fine dining, theatres, museums and shopping, while living in a stylish, cosy, classic period flat. Enjoy your London city break out on the town, or take a night off, cook at home and hunker down for some uniquely English delights on SKY TV. About Gary Gunas

Recently retired, my partner and I now live our life-long dream of having four sweet homes and living in whichever strikes our fancy at a given time. Since the stock market crash of 2008, to cover the bills, all the properties are rented on HomeAway whenever we're not in them. Managing the rentals has turned into quite a pleasant, though very time consuming, new profession for us, wherein we meet (or at least correspond with) the loveliest people from all over the planet. We've had nearly 300 guests in the past six years, and not a single bad experience. Phew! And we have great local staff for each property, so each home is always up to our own high standards for comfort, cleanliness and beauty.

Before retiring in 2005, I spent more than 30 years working on Broadway and in London's West End -- first managing, then producing, big musicals (mostly) plus handfuls of plays and concerts. I was part of the original productions of GODSPELL, DREAMGIRLS, LA CAGE AUX FOLLES, and many dozens more, and producer of The Who's TOMMY and JEKYLL & HYDE, to name a few. Broadway concerts include Bette Midler, Michael Crawford, Frank Sinatra and even a very elderly Josephine Baker (a New Year's Eve concert, at the Palace, of course), whose chateau is just down the road from our house in France.

My partner Bill Rosenfield was for many years what Time Magazine wrote of him: 'RCA Victor's Man about Broadway'. He produced more than 60 Original Cast Recordings -- just pick one up at home if you have one -- if it's from the 1990's or early 2000's, his name is probably on it: CHICAGO, TOMMY, RAGTIME, CABARET, on and on. Billy's now retired from that and actively engaged in his one true passion: writing plays. This new career is just budding, but already showing great progress. He does most of his writing in a cute little shed at the bottom of the garden behind our London flat.

Why Gary Gunas chose Islington

We love the Regency (late Georgian) architecture that is so prevalent in this part of town -- simple terraced houses with strict symmetry and Palladio's cube-and-a-half proportions which somehow create a great sense of calm, order and sophistication. Our house, on a perfectly-preserved square containing nothing but its original homes, features large windows and big open sky -- plus that pristine little park right across the square, with something in bloom every month of the year. And we greatly appreciate that very 'London' phenomenon, which is that all we hear is birdsong here, notwithstanding the fact that we're a 90-second walk to the very busy Upper Street, abounding with life and energy.

What makes this apartment unique

Immerse yourself in real life here -- our neighbourhood isn't the least bit touristy, just a breath of energized fresh air among real Londoners. Google 'Islington' and just see what comes up!

Highest Recommendation

Hands-down the most tastefully decorated rental I’ve ever seen, even handsomer than the photos led me to hope. I loved waking up each morning in such a beautiful room and just wanted to move in and stay. It looks as though the owners decorated it for their own pleasure and outfitted it for their convenience rather than as a rental. Everything is pristine—scrubbed clean and impeccably maintained.

I'd never heard of Islington, but that was sort of the point. It’s an area of the city--like Chelsea, Kensington, Bloomsbury, etc—that was a pleasure to learn a bit about, and because it’s less known, it’s not at all touristy. It’s a real neighborhood where some very lucky Londoner’s live on lovely little Georgian squares. Everything you could want, including excellent pubs and restaurants, is in walking distance, and the major sights of London a tube-ride away.

The owners’ exceptionally thorough and entertaining guide to the flat and to Islington covers all you might want to know. If a question does arise, however, the owners respond in minutes.

Excellent stay in a delightful apartment

  • 5 of 5

A truly lovely flat in delightful location. Having stayed in Upper Street on many occasions we decided to look around for somewhere other than a hotel for our latest stay. I'm so pleased we stumbled across both this property and Gibson Square. Not only is it a tranquil little haven away from the hustle and bustle of London the flat itself was simply beautiful. Everything was very tasteful, well presented, beautifully clean and extremely well looked after. It's clear that Gary and Billy have poured a lot of love and attention into the property. The location is perfect with so many restaurants on the doorstep. In the week we stayed there we never ate further than a 5 minute radius of Upper Street and Therberton Street. Transport links are brilliant with so many buses taking you to most of the parts of London you could want for tourist stuff. Our compliments to the owners for taking such care of the property and ensuring its a treat for people to stay there. They did honestly think of everything from the tourist info, the helpful advice on how things worked and the guides to local transport and shops etc. I loved my morning routine when I would pop the 'whistling kettle' on the stove, open the shutters and wait for the day to commence. I would have no hesitation in recommending this property to my friends, however, it would be nice to keep it as our personal little secret! but that wouldn't be fair on the owners. Islington is one of my favourite places and should we ever be in the fortunate position to own a property in London, Gibson Square would be top of my list.

A wonderful London experience

  • 5 of 5

Thank you Gary for making our first London stay such a memorable one. You were quick to respond and so helpful when we needed assistance with our administrative issues. The information you provided about the flat and the area was not only extensive, it was a fun read. We took a chance on a beautiful apartment in an area not often mentioned in guidebooks and boy did it pay off. We felt like Londoners in a very walkable neighborhood with good access to tourist sights if you’re willing to take a little time to get around by public transportation. Enjoy the journey! Food was surprisingly good and there were a number of excellent choices within walking distance, The “Pig and Butcher” and “Carlucci’s” right around the corner for example. Wonderful independently owned stores nearby. We would absolutely stay here again!

Excellent place to stay in London

  • 4 of 5

The flat is very comfortable and extremely well equipped. The bed is firm, there is a comfortable chair and a good light for reading. The kitchen and bathroom contain everything I needed and more, including a washer and drier. It is very clean and well maintained. The owners supply extensive information about the neighbourhood and getting around London; and, if they are at home, are very friendly and eager to answer questions.

I thought that I might have made a mistake staying in Islington, but I ended up being glad I did. The neighbourhood is very pleasant and there are a plethora of restaurants, cafes and bakeries nearby. At first glance, Islington seemed a little far out of the centre, but it is well served by tube and bus; and, in fact, is a walkable distance from both the west and the east ends.

It's not perfect. The bathtub is a bit high and at times you hear the upstairs neighbours walking and walking, but all in all I recommend it. As you can partially see from the picture, there are two floor to ceiling windows that look out of a green space. At night it is very quiet, so there are no sleeping problems, even for a light sleeper like me.

Owner's Response: We’re delighted to hear so much very good feedback on your experience here! You’re the first to mention that you found the claw-footed tub to be a bit high; we take that information on board, but it IS the standard height for claw-foots. As for the neighbours walking around upstairs, yes — these great old Georgian buildings, despite their masonry exteriors, are made entirely of wood and plaster inside and so will never be utterly soundproof. Comes with the territory, I’m afraid. We’re so sorry you heard them up there. While 4-stars is a lovely rating indeed, and we thank you for it, I have to admit that it’s our very first! Across the three properties that we list on HomeAway, 69 of our 70 reviews have been FIVE STARS. We’ll bear up the best we can with these four, though — and happily! Cheers, Gary & Billy

Lovely apartment in an interesting neighborhood

  • 5 of 5

Beautiful, well appointed apartment in a beautiful building. Perfect for 2. Nice furnishings, well decorated, everything you need in a vacation rental. The neighborhood is one few tourists are likely to know. It is lively, full of handsome buildings, good restaurants and food shops. The only issue is transportation, as the local Tube stop is not on a very useful line. But you learn, and we found we really liked taking the buses, as we saw much of London that we hadn't on many earlier visits. The landlords are completely charming, and provide a ton of useful info and advice. Highly recommended...we certainly hope to go back!

Home Away From Home!

  • 5 of 5

I was fortunate enough call this beautiful flat "home" for 11 days during the first few weeks that I moved to London. If I could live in this studio permanently, I would! The apartment is gorgeous with tasteful and welcoming touches throughout. It is perfect for a couple or a single guest with ample storage, a fully stocked kitchen, and everything one might need. The studio has floor to ceiling windows that allow for a beautiful light in the afternoons and truly, it is even more beautiful than the photos. Gibson Square itself is charming! I was so taken by the neighborhood that with the help of Gary and Billy, I found a permanent place nearby. Gibson Square is just a few blocks to the many great restaurants and theatre options on Upper Street, and it is a short walk to the tube/bus station. Aside from the many wonderful attributes of the flat and its location, the most important aspect of my stay was my interaction with Gary and Billy. They could not have been more welcoming, gracious, and thoughtful during my first weeks in a new country. They even left me a “welcome to London” gift at my front door on my first night. For the rest of my visit, they went out of their way to help me get settled and to check on me. I will recommend this beautiful flat to all of my family and friends when they are visiting London. This is a terrific price compared to London hotels and far nicer! One note of caution for those who have trouble with stairs like my mom, the flat is on the 2nd floor and up two short stairways.

Ideally situated to explore London for a great city break, Islington itself is a hip, sophisticated destination on the northern edge of Central London, politically and aspirationally resembling Manhattan's upscale Upper West Side. The renowned Almeida Theatre and Kings Head Theatre Pub are just steps away, as are all the main supermarkets, plus endless boutiques and really fine food and antique shops. Stroll, bike or jog along Regents Canal. Easy transport links, fine restaurants, gay friendly. You can even walk (22 mins) to the Eurostar terminal and day trip to Paris in luxury for £59 return. Local celebrities include James McAvoy, Lily Allen, Dido and, formerly, Vladimir Lenin, Heath Ledger and Sir Walter Raleigh. Gibson Square alone boasts an Oscar-nominated film composer, a Booker Prize-winning author, a renowned stage director, a nationally known comic and a Member of Parliament. Former neighbour Tony Blair formed New Labour with Gordon Brown in one of our Upper Street restaurants

Other Activities: Theatre, theatre, theatre. (Or theater, theater, theater!) Museums, fashion, cuisine -- everything that London has to offer!

Golf: No golf here in central London, of course, but many of the nation's legendary courses are within an easy day-trip from the many train hubs easily accessible from our flat.
