Villa Francastella is available in the Spring and Summer for private self-catering rental. This enchanting, well-equipped & spacious four-bedroom detached house, with its own garden, is quietly situated yet only a short walk from sandy beach, shops, restaurants and bars of the resort of Playa de Pals in the most beautiful part of the Costa Brava. With several beaches, pool, fantastic snorkeling, golf and local medieval towns nearby, there is something for everyone. The villa is built in the Catalan style, and is equipped throughout to a high standard. It sleeps 8 comfortably and has space to relax, within the house, on the large covered terrace, or on the lawn in its garden. It has a pleasant view and overlooks the gardens and pool of the Sa Punta restaurant, rated one of the finest in the region. The house is surrounded by scented pines and the immediate vicinity comprises an abundance of green in which there are other detached houses set off quiet roads with little traffic.

The area: Playa de Pals is a small resort set in the most beautiful part of the Costa Brava between Barcelona and the French border. It is mainly composed of villas set around a village centre, in which can be found the typical facilities of a beach resort. The beach is sandy and extends for a considerable distance. Within easy reach of the house, there are several small fishing villages with sheltered coves and, in a week, one can easily swim at a different beach every day. There are two magnificent golf courses, and all sorts of water sports are available. 3km offshore are the Islas Medas where there is an underwater nature reserve, well worth a visit (there are organised trips in glass-bottomed boats, scuba-diving expeditions, or you can hire your own craft and go snorkeling).

Wining and dining: Playa de Pals and the surrounding area have a great variety of restaurants offering Catalan, Spanish and French cooking. These range from cheap family restaurants to the exquisite Sa Punta, and are mostly really worth a visit (or two). We leave our own guide to these in the house, the result of many years of serious scientific research!

Pool: The Sa Punta restaurant opposite the villa has a full-sized pool as well as a kiddies pool. If seen appropriately to patronise the restaurant (eg a meal or pool-side drinks), guests can normally use the pool at leisure. Lunch can be taken beside the pool, so adults can enjoy this in the style to which the Spanish have grown accustomed (ie, as slowly as you like) while keeping a benevolent eye on the children swimming.

Golf: Within a few minutes' drive are two 18 hole golf courses, maintained to a high standard, a must for all serious golfers.

Lovely place to stay

2 stays at Villa Francastella have both been delightful. The first, in the October half-term meant that the area was wonderfully uncluttered and we pretty much had the beaches to ourselves. Some restaurants were closed but we had no difficulty in finding a wealth of local eateries! Temperatures were very pleasant, in the 70s during the day.

Our second trip was at the height of the season, August, and while the beaches were undoubtedly fuller, you could get away from the crowds quite easily. The water temperature was lovely and the snorkelling absolutely fantastic. Supper at the beach restaurant is a MUST.

The house is just right for getting away. All the facilities are there and the garden and BBQ area are a great place to sit over those early evening drinks after a hard days playing.

We had a wonderful time in both seasons and would certainly recommend the villa.

Wonderful holidays

Our family has had a number of most enjoyable holidays at the villa, which, with the surrounding area, has remained unspoilt over the years. We have many happy memories of all the different beaches to choose from; Platja de Pals the nearest, but also Sa Riera, Calella, Llafranch and Sa Tuna and all the places to see roundabout. The villa itself is charming, with local shops within easy reach where we have bought our croissants for breakfast, obtained cash from the ATM and bought souvenirs to take home.
When we've felt like spoiling ourselves, we wandered down to the Sa Punta Restaurant, three or four minutes away, for a first class meal and a swim in their pool, which you can see over the road from the villa.
There are wonderful markets to be visited in Torroella and Palafrugell and local towns and villages such as Pals, Peratallada and Begur to be explored.
This is a truly wonderful base from which to discover or revisit this part of the Costa Brava.

Our stay at the Villa last year (2008) was a very happy and busy one. Our party at times through our 3 week stay ranged in age from a 12 year old through to a sprightly 81 year old and I can honestly say that everyone (7 over the period) thoroughly enjoyed themselves. The accommodation is accurately described and is clean, well-maintained and well served by the owner and the local agents.

Opposite, is a marvelous hotel with a superb swimming pool available to non-residents for the price of a drink or two. It also has an excellent restaurant and a genial patron. It is very convenient and we made good use of it.

The villa is well situated for many activities and trips and in our action-packed holiday these included: a day-trip by train to Barcelona although it has to be said that the nearest station is 10 miles away; a trip in a glass-bottomed boat which isn't quite that but something much more exciting, and visits to just off the main road restaurants which were all well worth the effort!

Nearer to home so to speak, are any number of sandy beaches all with lifeguard service. We swam every day at one or another or at the swimming pool with wonderful weather throughout.
There is a small but well-stocked supermarket just down the road and just a little further along the road a large supermarket with fresh fish and meat. We also barbecued on a number of occasions. Barbies in our family tend to be a little more complicated than the burger and banger variety and as I am nominated as chief cook I can vouch that the in-built BBQ on the terrace is a great asset and judging by the comments and empty plates on each occasion, it also works well! Indeed eating late on the terrace on a quiet and calm evening overlooking the (empty) floodlit swimming pool is very gentle pleasant and peaceful experience.
The villa is well equipped with books and games and also local information. We had no problem in finding things to do and trips to make including very exciting car journeys along narrow lanes with sheer drops and spectacular views A car is a must and there is good parking at the villa, we had two cars for some of our stay. However it would be remiss of me not to say that this parking is interesting! As long as you don't mind backing down a little incline onto the road, there's no problem - but you soon get used to it!

Not only am I happy to recommend the Villa Francastella, we are returning this year (2009). That after all is the best recommendation!
