Shopping. There are many speciality stores in Varese selling local cheeses, Parmigiano, porcini, local wines and pastries. Try the Torta della Nonna from the bakery on the main square in Varese. On Tuesdays there is a market with great fish and many other items. Albergo Amici has amazing local food and has been in the same family for hundreds of years. Albergo delle Poste also has excellent cuisine as does Trattoria Chichinetto on the Caruggio in Varese. Try the many other trattorias and pizzerias as well. Activities:
Hiking: This is the best ! try the Monte Verruga paths at Passo del Biscia. Hiking maps available at the Varese tourist office and at the Villa. . Colla di Valletti. You will see spectacular views to the left and right. Villa di Valletti. This largely abandoned medieval village just below Le Moggie is really worth the walk. Let people know that you are staying at le Moggie and they will be very hospitable. Swimming and Tennis at the complex just outside Varese Ligure. Riding.
Day trips:
The Riviera and Sestri Levante. The Baia del Silencio is a must see gorgeous Riviera beach in Sestri. There are many great seafood restaurants there, especially the one right on the Baia, as well as many elegant shops. You should try the boats to Portofino and the Cinque terre. Try Focaccia al Formaggio, a local speciality. Lerici, the bay of La Spezia, Tellaro, and Porto Venere are definitely worth a visit.
Genoa, is fascinating city with the world’s most extensive medieval city centre and many museums. Sarzana, Parma, Firenze, Pisa and other parts of Tuscany are nearby.
