This simple but lovely rustic private home, is situated at the Union beach side of Nungwi Village, just along from East Africa diving.
It is set back just moments (about 100 meters) from the gorgeous white sandy beach and its beautiful turquoise ocean. The home and garden are set within a high surrounding brick wall for privacy. Kombo and/or Ali live on site to look after their guests.
Standard rate for bed and breakfast is €70 for a double or €100 if the extra bed is required in the triple room.

The 3 bedrooms (all with en suite toilet and shower) can accommodate up to 7 guests and all face into the pretty sandy garden. All bedrooms have mosquito nets and the choice of air conditioning or ceiling fans (if you prefer fresh air).
Two rooms have an adjoining door in the middle which families with children sometimes like to keep unlocked. The Kombe double room is separate on the opposite side of the pretty sandy garden.
The beach door opens out onto the wide sandy path which leads up onto the beach, where the local bar and restaurant offer cocktails, wine, beer, soft drinks and delicious fresh fish and snacks.
There are dive schools, bars, hotels and restaurants all along the beach. A supermarket for general basic needs is nearby.
The home features the local makuti (thatch) roofing, and has a spacious upstairs banda (open air veranda) looking out towards the sea through the palm trees – you can see the dhows passing by at certain times - perfect for a sunset drink, game of cards, or reading. The simple outdoor kitchen is not available for guest use, however you are welcome to keep drinks cold in the fridge.
You can hire a car from Stone Town or we are happy to organise transport to and from the airport or ferry. The picturesque journey to Nungwi, takes approx. 1 hour and 20 minutes.
Our trip to Tanzania was just amazing!
After a 5-day safari, we spent 6 days at Nungwi Retreat - we now wish we had booked it for longer.
The villa is so beautiful and so nice inside, the bar is great, a big table, where we played games in the evening. This is really a great place to stay, everything was perfect. Combo was very helpful, but the best surprise we had - is the air condition in every room!!!
I will really recommend this place to my friends and really hope to come back to zanzibar to stay longer as the beach and water are unbelievable there.
'We loved our stay at Nungwi Retreat, it's beautiful. Kombo was great. The aircon was a great help as it was pretty hot. Kombo's breakfast juice is totally amazing. Just fabulous!' Can't wait to go back!
I loved Nungwi retreat when I stayed a few years ago but it was even better this time. Kombo have continued to update the place and yet is still really reasonable for what you get. The ambience and sense of being in somewhere truly Zanzibarian remain but it now has some mod cons such as lovely (real) air conditioning as well as the overhead fans and brilliant showers! The place is charming, the other guests are friendly and it's lovely to be so close to Union beach rather than the more frenetic beach by Chola's. Chola's bar is great and easy to walk but not so close you have to listen to the grinding beat when you want a peaceful night in!
The food was stupendous, the freshest fish, squid to die for, and potatoes - who knew they should taste like this. Kombo is a great host and cook. Loads to do, but also easy just to hang out in the hammocks in Nungwi retreat as you have so much space to yourself.
The only place to stay in my opinion. :)
I really enjoyed my stay here. The rooms are clean and they manage to keep it somewhat cool in the hot hot weather. Kombo is a really great person and will help you with everything you need from organizing day trips to laundry services. The house is 100m from the beach and a short walk from every major high quality tourist company (you will find on tripadvisor) like Divine Diving, Zanzibar Parasailing, etc. Restaurants are plenty and there is an Internet cafe and many small curio stands nearby. Location Location!
A découvrir.
Zanzibar is just amazingly beautiful everywhere and the people are so friendly. I stayed with two girlfriends at Nungwi Retreat and we had a fabulous time. This was our first trip to Africa didn’t know what to expect and we were a bit nervous but Kombo was so lovely and looked after us so well. The rooms were simple but clean and comfortable set in a lovely sandy private garden. We ate delicious fresh fish every day in various Zanzibarian spices! We had the most amazing time (even though we were there in rainy season) and can’t wait to go back to stay there again but for a longer time to see more of this lovely island. Spice Tour, snorkeling, turtles and Prison Island absolutely fabulous as was everything else - also the most gorgeous shells! Super fun playing drums with new friends around the beach fire!
The idyllic islands of Zanzibar (Unguja and Pemba) have the most stunning beautiful white beaches, lapped by the warm turquoise waters of the Indian Ocean.
The beaches in Zanzibar are a paradise, interspersed with picturesque fishing villages, where the people live a simple way of life, unchanged over the years.
It is the perfect place to relax, soak up the sun and swim or dive with beautiful fish or equally perfect, if you enjoy sightseeing.
The island is full of interesting places to explore and experience local culture. There is Historic Stone Town, Jozani Forest, Prison Island, fabulous spice tours, Kizimkazi where you can swim with dolphins and much more.
The waters between Zanzibar and Pemba are home to some excellent game fishing opportunities.
There are both traditional and modern boats on offer for scenic coastal trips. diving and snorkeling. Zanzibar’s best diving is enjoyed at the northern tip of the island, where many professional dive operators can be found.
Other Activities: Sunset cruises on traditional dhows, local turtle conservation sanctuary, strolling along the gorgeous beaches.
