Photos and Description of the Eskdale vacation farmhouse rental
Group accommodation for 16 people in the beautiful valley of Eskdale

Fisherground Farmhouse holiday cottage offers self catering accommodation in the heart of Eskdale, one of the most tranquil valleys of the Lake District. It is one of our largest properties, offering comfortable and spacious group accommodation for up to 16 people.

With a large south facing garden and fantastic views of the surrounding fells, Fisherground is an ideal base for exploring the mountains, rivers, lakes and tarns of this beautiful part of Cumbria. Eskdale is a wonderful starting point for hundreds of walks, either on the fells or along the banks of the River Esk, which flows from Scafell at the top of the valley down to the estuary at Ravenglass, an old fishing village complete with a ruined Roman bath-house.

The famous Ravenglass & Eskdale Miniature Railway runs along the valley, its steam trains making the leisurely seven-mile journey down to the sea. There are also five pubs in the valley.

Accommodation summary: The hallway leads to the fully equipped kitchen to the left - with dishwasher, a range with eight gas rings and two electric ovens, microwave, and fridge with freezer compartment. There is a washing machine and tumble drier in the room under the stairs, as well as a second fridge and a separate upright freezer.

There is a separate dining room with a large table that easily seats 16 and CD/MP3 stereo system.

The sitting room is large and spacious with an open fire, TV, video and DVD player.

The dining room leads to two downstairs bedrooms (one twin - which has a double bed and a single bed - and one set of bunks) and a bathroom.

Upstairs there are five further bedrooms - four doubles and a twin. There are two further bathrooms upstairs - one with a bath, one with a shower. There is an additional twin bedroom in the attic which is reached via the twin room on the first floor.

The kitchen downstairs leads to a conservatory.

The garden outside is large and faces south and has a barbecue area (if you use the barbecue, we ask that you clean it thoroughly afterwards for the enjoyment of the next guests at Fisherground). We do ask you to consider the neighbours at Fisherground and keep noise outside to a minimum after 11pm.

We are happy to accept one (well behaved) dog per booking but we do ask that they are not let into any of the bedrooms and that you clean up any mess that they may leave in the garden.

There is parking at the back of the farmhouse with ample room for five cars.

Upstairs in one of the outbuildings outside is a games room. Downstairs there is room to store bikes, canoes and other outdoor equipment. These rooms are locked for extra security.

Eskdale is one of the most beautiful valleys in the Lake District. Situated in the quieter side of the National Park, it has a peaceful tranquillity that makes it especially appealing to those who want to avoid the crowds. This makes is a great venue for holiday cottages in the Lake District.

At the upper end of Eskdale is one of the Lake District’s best-kept secrets, Great Moss, a stunning open valley surrounded by some of the highest peaks in England, Scafell Pike, Esk Hause and Bowfell.

The road winds its way down Hard Knott Pass, a steep mountain road that is one of the most challenging drives in the Lakes. It goes past an old Roman fort built between AD120 and AD138, which is open to visitors. There are spectacular views from there right down to the Irish Sea and the old fishing village of Ravenglass, where there is a ruined Roman bath-house. Nearby is Muncaster Castle, Gardens and Owl Centre, with lots for children to do all year round.

Fisgerground Farmhouse. May 2011

4 of 5
Submitted: May 17, 2011 Stayed: May 2011
We had a great family stay at Fisherground. The property was just as described on the website, but best of all it was clean and on the whole well cared for. Although it was in a very quite area- with the main food shops being some distance (timewise if not mile wise!) the great thing about this place is Tesco deliver so more time to explore the area.
A great place for walking and chilling out with friends/family, and it accommodated the large numbers with ease both for relaxing in soft seating or at the fantastic dinning room table. Also lots of nice big cooking dishes for 'large group easy oven bake' meals
My only real complaint whould be the lack of wardrobe space in one of the double bedrooms - it doubled up a cot storage area which we didn't need so we had nowhere to hang clothes properly in that room.
Great pub within walking distance that done reasonable meals, with a friendly landlord.
The 'games room' was a bit lacking- but again it didn't bother us as we didn't have young children/teens to use it, and in all fairness that age group might have been happy with it anyway.
Nice touch in the house was the cuboard full of puzzles, games (old!!) books and DVDs etc, to use.
It was a bit of a journey to the main lakes (unless you travel the Hardknott Pass!), but this was something we should have researched ourselves before booking - so I wouldn't use that as a negative when booking, just something to be aware of.
On the whole a lovely big house with lots of space inside, so excellent for family groups. It had two sitting/relaxing areas so you wern't on top of each other all the time.
Not really sure who I'd recommend it for - it would really depend of what you're looking for. It suited our needs of a relaxing whole family break, so we didn't really explore the area other than lots of walking ,talking, eating and drinking!
There was a campsite next door - didn't affect us in the least, but I suppose it could be busy during the summer months.
