A Real Retreat
From the first contact with M. Francoise, this rental was a dream. She is genial and helpful, and her flat is precisely as described...only better. The small private garden was abloom in hydrangeas and begonias, and because the weather was delightfully cool and the windows were all open, the sounds of the water feature in the courtyard added to the restful feel of the stay. Our walks to and from the Metro were filled with interesting and unusual sights, sounds, and smells.
The kitchen was so well equipped that I lacked for nothing while prepping the dinners we ate in the flat. The washer and dryer were a godsend, as was the iron. There was plenty of seating for our crew. The beds were comfortable and everything was meticulously clean. Our one very minor complaint--that tiny shower already mentioned. None of us are very large or very tall folks, but it was a tight fit. The space and comfort of the en suite more than made up for it, though.
There's a wonderful African restaurant around the corner from the flat, too, called La Rencontre. Try the maffe, ndole, or gombo--all excellent choices!
We happily shopped not only at the SPAR across the street but at the Carrefour on Blvd. Barbés, as well as at the fruit and vegetable stands on Rue Poulet...all on the easy stroll home from the Chateau Rouge Metro stop. Our favorite boulangerie was just three blocks away (good ones on each block in between), and we ate pain au chocolate daily every morning for nine days, and never found any as good as we continued our travels!
Two weeks home, and I miss this delightful apartment and quarter! I would definitely stay there again if the hoped-for return trip comes true.
