PIGEONNIER 1 OF 6 APARTMENTS

Chalon sur Saone Cottage Rental Photos and Description

Peaceful self catering apartments in rural area near wine villages of Cote d'Or

En La Marre is an early 19thC farmhouse on the estate of Baron de Charette's Chateau de Dracy in a peaceful rural location surrounded by forests and meadows. The property has been converted into six beautiful apartments for couples of all interests and lifestyles, unsuitable for children of any age. Two of the apartments are in the original farmhouse, one is an independent converted stable/pigeonnier and three are on the first floor of the former barn. All the apartments are spacious, comfortable and well-equipped, each with private patio with garden furniture and gas BBQ's. There are guests' laundry facilities and ample car parking on site, plenty of sunloungers around the pool, and a lovely herb garden in the flower-bedecked courtyard which guests are encouraged to make use of for their culinary creations. The resident owners, CHRIS and JUDITH MOSEDALE, are on hand to ensure their guests enjoy a relaxed, peaceful stay away from the pressures of everyday life

SPORTING ACTIVITIES : GOLF - three excellent golf courses nearby - MONTCHANIN/LE CREUSOT, 18 hole championship standard - CHALON 18 hole, AUTUN, 9 hole. Lots of paths have been created along the canal and former railway lines for keen CYCLISTS, ROLLER BLADERS and WALKERS - 'La Voie Verte'. Bicycles are available to rent at En La Marre at a modest price. There are details available in our apartments of other cycling and walking routes among the vineyards and hills. WATERSPORTS (sailing school , pedalo, boat, windsurf boards) are available on the lake at AUTUN by the golf range; TORCY (Le Creusot) has windsurfing, canoeing, kayaking and rowing, and the LAC DES SETTONS (Morvan Nat. Park) has all watersports, also swimming with beach facilities. FISHING is very popular and available in the many lakes, rivers and canals. Permits are required and weekly/daily ones can be bought in the 'tabacs'. There are several equestrian centres nearby for HORSERIDERS: e.g. Ecuries les Bruyeres, St. Pierre de Varennes (6kms) : info@poneys-des-bruyeres.fr; Centre Equestre et Poney Club de Montalvin, Le Breuil (Le Creusot) (6kms); ROCKCLIMBING is also available 6kms away at 'Le Bout de Monde', NOLAY. Guestbook comments from the owner

I woke last night at 4 am to total darkness and a gentle rain - a million miles away from the rest of the world. Such a contradiction to the bursting conviviality of last night's party - food wine and friendship, an intoxicating combination. Thank you both for such a lovely week.

Comments from Owner Guestbook

'We have had the most wonderful week - weather too, in this lovely tranquil setting. Our hosts Judith and Chris made us feel so welcome. We have enjoyed exploring all the areas around, sampling the restaurants and of course the wine. We are coming back next year for another helping of the good life' - Sarah and Ivan Cox, Northamptonshire
'What a wonderful introduction to our first visit to Burgundy. After a long journey from Ottawa, we were warmly received by Chris and Judith with a glass of red wine. Like others before us we have found En La Marre to be an ideal location to discover and explore the wine villages of the region. We plan to return!' -Annette Bourgeois and George Plant, Ottawa, Canada
'We had a wonderful stay at En La Marre with Christopher and Judith as our wonderful hosts. We enjoyed the markets, fresh cheeses, saucisson and pate and enjoyed cooking Burgundian food in our gite' - Lori and Andy Mazor, NYC, USA.

Autumn week in Burgundy

  • 5 of 5
We much enjoyed our September week in Pigeonnier, and were made most welcome by Judith and Chris - we felt like long lost members of their family. With only one week for our holiday, we had to choose carefully from the many possibilities the area has to offer. We particularly enjoyed time in Beaune and Nuits St Georges, walking along the canals and gathering fresh walnuts, and watching the vintage being brought in at the cooperative at Buxy. This is where we got the best value wines, although it was also the time for the annual discounts in the supermarkets. The shopping in nearby towns such as Chagny was interesting, especially on market day, and we enjoyed shopping and bringing new ingredients back to the kitchen at Pigeonnier, where we had all the equipment needed to turn out some fine meals. However the best meal was one at a restaurant a few miles away outside Nolay.
We also enjoyed the barbecue Judith and Chris organised, and our regular pre-dinner drinks sitting in the sun on the little terrace outside our lounge. Time went too quickly, and we shall come again to explore this unspoilt area more deeply.

Excellence in Burgundy

  • 5 of 5
For us this was an ideal location- in the country, close to major villages and towns (Beaune). The cluster gite (several apartments sharing common areas-pool, central courtyard) was perfect. We could enjoy as much privacy as we wished and share as much with fellow travelers as we wanted, too. 'Happy Hours' on the courtyard were great opportunities to share experiences at cuvees, markets etc.
Judith and Christopher are excellent sources of local information-patisseries, charcuteries, markets, wineries etc. and you'll be missing wonderful opportunities if you don't consult them.
Our gite, the Pigeonneur, was perfect for us- great kitchen, excellent bathroom, and very suitable living room etc- clean, well equipped etc.
The market at Chagny is excellent. We went twice and greatly appreciated the rotisserie folks up the right side where we bought wonderful chicken as well as pork roast and veggies for another meal.
We appreciate central locations with limited driving so enjoyed our access to Mercurey, Givry and the cuvee at Buxy, which we highly recommend. As well, went to Beaune three times and enjoyed the Hotel Dieu, the market and just wandering about each time.
Go picnicking among the vineyards, track down wineries, enjoy the markets.
Be of good cheer, be respectful and polite... and have a great time in Burgundy... we did.
