Le Bugue Farmhouse Rental Photos and Description

High-end, Restored Villa, 6 Bedrooms, 3.5 Baths, (Sleeps 12)

Not far from Sarlat, where the Dordogne river makes a dramatic loop, 'Les Volets Bleus' is a very private, beautifully-restored 300 year old Perigord stone farmhouse. It sits on two acres of lawned garden, with magnificent views of the surrounding countryside.

With its characteristic blue shutters, this spacious retreat is elegantly furnished with French country antiques, and is situated among fig and walnut trees. It has with three outstanding verandahs, two that overlook the large, magnificent (secretly fenced) pool that receives day-long sunshine.

Luxuriously furnished, and with all modern conveniences, 'Les Volets Bleus' sleeps 12, with four queen-size/king bedrooms and two single/twin bedrooms, all with crisp white linens and sumptuous beds.

The property is ideal for one large group, or for two or more smaller family groups, since the Farmhouse property includes a wonderful converted Barn (attached to the main house), with both the Farmhouse and Barn having their own fully-equipped kitchens, dining and living areas, so that two groups can have their own completely separate eating/living spaces, or they can all join together in the huge country kitchen of the Farmhouse.

'Les Volets Bleus' offers quality and seclusion for a family or group of friends wanting to holiday together. With four bedrooms (three queen-size and one twin) and two bathrooms in the Farmhouse, and two bedrooms (one double and one twin) and one bathroom in the Converted Barn, 'Les Volets Bleus' offers a total country getaway in the heart of the Dordogne.

Walk or drive into the timeless village of Trémolat with its well-known Relais & Chateaux hotel and Michelin-starred restaurant, historic Romanesque church and casual bistrots, and you will immediately step back in time into the wonderful, yet simple Perigordian past.

'Les Volets Bleus' offers a unique retreat from the business of day-to-day life, while still offering you the comfort of modern conveniences, all set in an atmosphere of charm and stylish elegance - like free WIFI, free INTERNATIONAL phone, and satellite TV inside a 300 year old stone farmhouse! The best of both worlds...

The property was purchased in 2005 and renovated to an exceptionally high standard with all new furniture, beds, linens, appliances and filled with antiques. All this was done with a careful eye to modern comforts, while staying true to the charm and history of the area.

For enjoying the outdoors, there are plenty of sunbeds, outdoor tables and garden furniture along with barbecues to enjoy the warm summer evenings. The 11m X 5 m flood-lit pool sits in a large grassy area, with plenty of lounging chairs and umbrellas available.

'Les Volets Bleus' is situated in the Perigord Noir within easy reach of the famous caves and paleolithic history of Les Eyzies (25 minutes), Le Bugue (15 minutes) a lively local market town, Sarlat (40 minutes) with its medieval streets and famous market, and Bergerac (35 minutes), famous for foie gras, wines and ancient architecture. Périgueux (40 minutes) has fabulous shopping, while St Emilion (one hour) offers the perfect excursion to a quintessential Bordeaux wine-country town.

This region is rich in historic sites including the Lascaux Caves, and the fascinating Bastide towns such as Beaumont, Moliéres, and Monpazier which run along the spectacular Dordogne river.

Travel by car or by flat-bottomed 'gabarres' (river boats) on the Dordogne to see the many magnificent châteaux to be found within easy reach of 'Les Volets Bleus'. Local, traditional markets abound and your days will be spent trying the freshest produce including the best selection of the classic food of the Perigord: foie gras, duck confit, walnuts, goat cheese, truffles and wine.

So find yourself a place in heaven, or rent it for a week at least, and enjoy long lunches out under the wysteria, or late-evening barbecues overlooking the pool. A delightful 20 minute walk through the countryside takes you into the nearby village of Trémolat, while a wander to the next-door farm offers a wonderful, local meal at the area’s best 'ferme auberge'.

About Janice

We are the proud owners of “Les Volets Bleus” and purchased and upgraded/renovated the property in June 2005. Although our home is in California, we have traveled a great deal in western Europe and have rented many properties – some great, and some less than spectacular! We always appreciated cleanliness, comfort, good beds, furniture you could actually sit on, great linens and towels, appliances that really worked, and nice big wine glasses! After buying our dream French farmhouse, our philosophy hasn’t changed - and we have upgraded the standard of the house to meet or exceed the best we’ve seen. Basically, we have designed it to be the way we’d like it if we arrived tired and hungry from across the world.

READ REVIEW on our website.

Janice purchased this farmhouse in 2005

Why Janice chose Le Bugue

We found this beautiful area in 2003 when we took cooking classes in the area - and were amazed by the gentleness of the region: gentle food, gentle geography, gentle people. In addition, it's really how you hope life will be when you head to rural France. Most of our guests are shocked that a place like this REALLY exists! We looked at other countries, and considered other areas of France, but we pinch ourselves routinely at how fortnate we were to find villages like Tremolat, Le Bugue, Limeuil, Ste Alvere, Paunat and a place like the Dordogne. We bought the house in 2005 and have never been happier. In addition, we're 15 minutes walk into Tremolat and 15 minutes drive from Le Bugue and Lalinde, so the easy access from Bordeaux and all the area is a plus. We've never met more welcoming and agreeable people in all our travels, and have never enjoyed food and wine like we do when at 'Les Volets Bleus'! We just love visiting our Farmhouse whenever we can. Rather than finding a holiday home, we've found a life.

What makes this farmhouse unique

The most commented on benefit about staying at our property is the number and quality of double beds, the wonderful linens and cleanliness of the house. We feel that when you're on vacation, you should sleep as well as possible, and so we spared no expense in finding and furnishing really good, queen-size beds in our home. We furnish them with Indian-cotton linens and great pillows - accompanied by soft, fluffy white towels. Others warned us that putting in 4 double bedrooms (and 2 singles) would be a mistake since you 'get more guests per room' if you put everyone in singles beds - but we disagreed! As a married couple, we LIKE to sleep together in a good bed when in vacation, so squashing together 2 tiny single beds is not our idea of fun! So at 'Les Volets Bleus' at least 4 couples get to sleep in a 'master' bedroom... rather than having one nice bedroom and then all the late-comers getting the dark rooms with single beds! Not my idea of fun either! In addition, we run our home like a boutique hotel with all the cleanliness, perks and amenities you'd expect at an upmarket location. We have an expert cleaning and prep team who go through the house with a fine-tooth comb... and it shows! So you can rest-assured that you will be sinking into beautiful, white, Indian-cotton sheets, and a bed that will give you the rest you deserve...and all in a house that meets the top standards for cleanliness. In terms of the outdoors, our guests also love all the terraces to sit outside on, and appreciate all the chairs and tables on each terrace, including all the pool chairs and towels. In addition, the beautifully clean, large pool (fenced to all highest EU regulations) is a winner with families of all ages in the summer. The proximity to all popular locations (being half-way between Bergerac and Sarlat) is also a definite plus, and our guests enjoy all the area has to offer, and not having to drive for hours to take part in it!

Guestbook comments from the owner

'We had a fantastic holiday in your farmhouse with three generations of our family. The swimming pool and delightful grounds were a great success, especially with the children. The dogs loved to lay in the cool shade under the beautiful wisteria canopy, whilst we whiled away the afternoons over long, lazy lunches. The accommodation far exceeded our expectations. We have rented many holiday properties over the last forty years and rate ‘Les Volets’ Bleus as the best.’ - Mike and Christine Coleman + Family

Les Volets Bleus is a great location, rural and quiet, but conveniently located

  • 5 of 5

Les Volets Bleus is a great location, rural and quiet, but conveniently located near many of the historical and scenic sites in the Dordogne, as well as the daily markets. The house was charming and very comfortable and well-appointed for our group of eight (four couples, which at one point became10 people, five couples), with enough spaces for all to spread out and rest, read, chat. And, we enjoyed the restaurant next door and those in nearby towns, but also loved "dining in" at the farmhouse with all the fresh market goods and wine we purchased daily - it was like a party every night! An almost daily event was a walk along the farm road and over the hill to Tremalot for morning pastries and back. Usually the pastries were eaten long before we reached the house. Since we were there in October the area was quieting down from the summer rush of tourists, which we found most pleasant since most of the group lives in Hawaii, which is a year around destination for visitors. It also turned out to be the warmest October world-wide and we had the most glorious early autumn weather. We had decided to stay at Les Volets Bleus on the recommendation of friends and it did not disappoint in any way. Most of the people in the group are retired or semi-retired, but quite active, and it suited us all. For the member of the group still working who could not put her job on hold the communications provided, internet and phone, allowed her to come with us and enjoy and at the same time keep her business going. Janice, the owner and hostess extraordinaire, was nearby and when she could she joined us in market adventures and touring, and was a wealth of information and suggestions. All in all a splendid vacation spent at an outstanding property, which we have recommended to friends and which we hope to visit again ourselves.

A rare find: luxurious yet authentic, completely rural yet walkable to a delightful historic village

  • 5 of 5

We have had a few holidays in the lovely Perigord Noir region and know that properties like this are to be treasured!

Utterly peaceful, well-managed, a generously equipped kitchen, luxurious bedding, perfect pool (all presented perfectly clean).. and only a 20 minute, enjoyable walk along a rural hillside path to the small but perfectly formed Tremolat. The picturesque village is home to 2 friendly boulangeries, a michelin starred restaurant & its sister bistro, another restaurant as well as small weekly fruit and meat market. If this was not enough, the farmhouse has a neighbouring Ferme Auberge which allowed to literally walk next door for a laid back feast of local produce. What happy memories of platers of food and carafes of wine being carried out to us, whilst we sat dreamily in the garden of our host!

Janice and Bill have made it their mission to create to a welcoming haven for their guests, and have succeeded.

Hidden gem close to Tremolat

  • 5 of 5

We had a blissfully peaceful fortnight here. For my part, I loved walking into Tremolat to pickup amaaazing almond croissants & pain au raisin (from the new boulangerie - there are two!) most mornings before breakfast. Great way to start the day - about 20 mins each way, or 30 mins if you're stopping to look at things - and along a footpath so no traffic!

Janice (and Bill), the owners, couldn't have been more welcoming and helpful, plugging us into local knowledge and contacts, so much so that by the time we left we almost felt we lived there. We had a couple of fantastic lunches at Les Truffieres - next door, a hundred yards away - and staggered home to snooze it off in the garden. Plenty other great restaurants in the area. We liked the laid backness of the Bistrot d'en Face in Tremolat.

The beds are superb - best sleep I've had for years. The location is genuinely quiet - well well away from the main road yet doesn't feel isolated. There's another nice amble you can do from the house, along a minor road through a farm and up to a viewpoint from which you get a superb view of the Bassin Nautique and Tremolat below. One of the farm dogs insisting on 'taking us for a walk' whenever we did this, even returning to our house with us to 'drop us off'.

Wonderful house and garden. Very responsive owner. Great location - we particularly enjoyed not having to get into the car for several days at a time. We'll be back!

Movie Picture Perfect

  • 5 of 5

You know those French arthouse movies? The ones with a lovely farmhouse and an equally charming storyline? With night markets in small towns, spontaneous folk dancing with the locals, warm balmy evenings with friends (old and new) and breakfast outside in the shade in the garden?

Those movies where we are reminded that life is best enjoyed in a simple and sincere way.....with good friends, food, wine and happy moments?

Now add to that the perfect hostess .....and you have "even-better-than-the-movie" magic!

Thank you, Thank You, THANK YOU!

Lived up to its name and MUCH more!!

What an incredible find! This is true French country living with all its magic, simplicity and beauty. The setting is ideal - peaceful and tranquil, yet close enough to a fab little town with great restaurants & boulangerie for morning croissants. The house is cosy and spacious all at the same time. The outside area is perfect for lazy breakfasts and the pool is large enough to work off the additional calories :-) There is the most wonderful restaurant within walking distance - tucked away behind trees and one that you'd never ordinarily find, but guaranteed to fall in love with instantly. The 2 weeks spent here were truly magnificent! I loved it & am certain to return.

Wonderful family time

  • 5 of 5

We just enjoyed a wonderful vacation in "Les Volets Bleu" with three generations of family. The location and setup was ideal for meeting everybody's needs. The multiple bathrooms were very helpful so each family had their own space and privacy. The house is divided so one family can have their own house with complete kitchen two bedrooms and family room. The other part has 4 bedrooms, a big kitchen, and a living area. This is also convenient for kids play area while the adults have the other part of the house in the evenings. The plush linens and comfortable beds were wonderful. The kitchen is well stocked and set up for large family meals. However, we mostly ate on the patio. The whole setting is picturesque and perfect for family photo shoots. Janice the owner/hostess was delightful and entertaining. Her stories, and advice made our trip even more interesting by personalizing the whole experience and making sure we took in all the Dordogne has to offer. We had wonderful days out wine tasting, had a delicious meal at the restaurant down the driveway, and took many beautiful walks straight from our front door. Staying at "Les Volet Bleu" with Janice looking after us made for a wonderful, memorable vacation for all. Each of us hope to return soon.
