I'm almost afraid to let others know about this gem of a place for fear it won't be available for me to come back.to. I loved my time in this house on plum island. I felt immediately like I was home and felt very safe here. I was so comfortable and Pam couldn't have been nicer. The local people were friendly and welcoming. The island is truely beautiful. The beaches are large and clean and sandy. I would choose this place over the cape any day. I went horseback riding in New Hampshire and met my cousin for lunch in Kittery Maine which is a 20 minute ride from the house. The Sunday flea market on rte 1a is not to be missed. I bought a beachy looking chalkboard for my kitchen and found a rattan mirror for $5. The fried clams at Bob Lobster is another must do on the list. Also Bears Neck in Rockport. Salem in October is crazy. The best clam chowder can be had at a place called the Village in Essex. Newburyport is beautiful...one home prettier than the next. It's like stepping onto a movie set. Ann, the bartender at the Beachcoma, always remembers what you drink and the food there is surprisingly good. No need to drive there as it's a very short walk. Mad Marthas breakfast is excellent. I have no idea what the island is like at the peak of the summer and probably never will. I loved having the island to myself. It was perfect. One of my neighbors is interested in coming to Plum Island and I would not hesitate to recommend Pam and this wonderful house to him. I adore Massachusetts and Plum Island. Go Red Sox!!!!

A happy return to Plum Island after an extended absence

Our son recently celebrated his thirtieth birthday. He requested that our family revisit Plum Island, a place we vacationed for over 10 years (1984-1994), when he and his brother were little boys. We were fortunate to secure the "blue water house" on the internet at the last minute. We found the photos to be accurate. However, the house is more charming in person!
It is bright and clean, with a fairly large kitchen/dining area, and multiple sitting/relaxing spaces on two levels. A short jaunt from the beach, the property is within walking distance to the convenience store, the liquor store, Mad Martha's and the Plum Island Grille.
The owner has an array of beach necessities (chairs, umbrella, kites, toys/games and a treasure trove of books) on hand to put to good use and ease the burden of packing/traveling with all of this required regalia. The house comes equipped with cable TV and internet, something that was NOT available to us back in the day! The updated bath and a half is much appreciated with a house full of people, as are the varied sleeping quarters. Outside is the BBQ grill and patio area, which offers another option for meals. If laundry duty is required, the washer and dryer are available, as is a clothes line outside. This property is "dog friendly", something we greatly appreciated as our four year old yellow accompanied us on this trip.
We highly recommend this house, and will return for many more summer vacations to Plum Island. Why we stopped, one will never know!

Miss the Big Blue House

We miss the Big Blue House, as our children named it. We stayed here 2 summers in a row, until my sister bought her Plum Island beach house. Our son still talks about this house. The first time I walked through the door it felt familiar, like a home away from home. It is not new and modern, it is quirky and a beach house. We had family gatherings (29+) and there was room for everyone. The owner could not have been nicer and she is very accommodating. It has been a couple of years since we visited, my comments late but honest. If you are looking for a family friendly casual New England beach house, the Big Blue House fits the bill. Don't tell my sister as her vacation rental is newly renovated 2012 down the street. Different vibes.

Ok, but needs a bit of improvement

The owners were very hospitable and the house is charming,They provided all the necessary for our young Family.
The house itself deserves improvements, the furniture could be upgraded, the absence of air conditionning makes the room on 2nd floor a real oven during hot days, windows don't all close well and some ceramic was broken, making it unadvisable for young children.
Location is good, across from the ocean, but traffic down below is surprisingly busy during holidays week ends. Beaches are clean but the water is freezing. Beware of greenhead flies during july.
Owner's Response: I feel the need to clarify and respond to some of these comments. Our beach house is continually being updated. Last year we replaced a futon, added a couch to the front porch, repainted some furniture, installed new windows in the bedrooms, painted the decks, installed a wooden walkway from the outdoor shower to the back door, and are currently in the process of installing a platform seating area in the front of the house giving our renters 3 options for outdoor deck seating.
The "broken ceramic" that was commented on refers to the tiled base beneath the wood stove (actually propane) in the dining room. The weight of the stove has cracked the tile. This will be addressed by removing the stove and the pad as the stove, though looks great, doesn't get used and takes up space. This will be done at the end of my seasonal rentals as I try hard not to disturb folks during their one-week vacations. A new window in the living room is also on the docket for post seasonal rentals.
Our 2nd floor does not have a/c but by opening the windows to the sea breeze and drawing the shades, it typically stays cool.
Most of our renters love the decor and 'beach house' feel.
These folks rented from the end of June to the beginning of July, including July 4th, a holiday weekend. Luckily, our house does not sit directly on the street.
The ocean in these parts is typically very cold at the beginning of the summer. My renters that stayed a week later commented to me how much they enjoyed swimming in the ocean. One good thing about heat waves, is that they do warm the ocean a few degrees.
The comment on greenheads must be from what they read because they were not there during greenhead season which is typically the end of July or early August depending on the moon and the tides. I do not want a reader to get the impression that they encountered greenheads at that time of year.
We strive to provide everything necessary for an enjoyable vacation. For these renters that included setting up a port-a-crib and high-chair, adding additional safety gates, and delivering a new DVD player mid week as the one that is usually there had gone missing.
We appreciate any comments and also the opportunity to respond.
We are always looking for ways to improve your stay on the beautiful barrier beach known as Plum Island.
