Puako is the gem of the islands, has the least rain, the most sun, the least traffic, vog, nor hustle bustle. It has a very special rythym that is very much old Hawaii, plus there are so many things to do! For example, within minutes you can be Beaching, shopping, swimming, golfing, horseba
ck riding, surfing, diving, beach combing, whale watching, birding, snorkeling, hiking, or fine dining!
We have enjoyed every minute of our time here! We have visited several historical sites, Volcano National Park, the "black sand" beach, in the south, the Bamboo Restaurant in Hawi, the deep valleys on the east as well as the Botanical Garden,-then the visitor's center observatory on Mauna Kea, Waimea Coffee Shop several times, and of course the beaches! We've learned so much about the Big Island and its welcoming people. Thank you for introducing us to ALL of it. We now understand why you LOVE to come here. We are rich in God's blessings and your gift of those days in #303 in honor of our retirement will be a memory for a lifetime. Mahalo!!

Condo was awesome, well kept. Owners have great communication and really want you to have a great experience. Close to great snorkeling, not far from shopping and other beaches. Beds were comfortable and plenty of room. Having boogey boards and beach chairs to use were great. I will definately stay hear again if I visit the big island.
Our party of five (parents, two college kids, and one of their friends) stayed at this Puako condo for a fun spring break trip that didn't break the bank. The condo decor is island style without being kitschy and was very clean and comfortable. We did not use the AC and were comfortable with the sea breezes and the fans moving air through. For a group with different abilities and interests, the location is perfect. My husband and I liked to get up early while it was still cool and go for a walk or an early snorkel (the snorkelling at the end of Puako Beach Drive was amazing -- we saw turtles, a manta ray, and a multitude of varieties of coral and tropical fish). We would come back to the condo for breakfast and pack up a picnic lunch and head out to a sandy beach where the younger set could boogie board, etc. (Puako Bay is mostly lined with lava tide pools.) Hapuna, Beach 69 and Mauna Kea Beach all within 5-15 minutes drive. Beach towels, four folding beach chairs, a small cooler, four boogie boards, two beach hats were all provided by the condo, stored in the study. Sometimes we picked up sandwiches from the general store next door, which also had a used book exchange and good rental DVDs. One morning we walked along the beach trail that starts at the end of Puako Beach Drive and in fifteen minutes were eating breakfast at the outdoor restaurant at the Fairmount Orchid resort. The trail to the Petroglyphs is close by the same resort. One nonbeach day we drove to Waimea for lunch at Pau restaurant and then north along the Kohalo ridgeline and on to the end of the north shore road to hike down into the beautiful Eden-like Pohulu Valley. Shaved ice in Hawi on the way home along the coast. One evening we drove 10 minutes south to wander around the ancient Hawaiian fishponds on the Mauna Lani resort grounds and had a big splurge dinner at the Napua restaurant overlooking the beach there. A week sped by. We liked the condo option over staying at a fancy resort; it was more affordable, we could do our own cooking when we wanted to, and it felt more "real" to be in a small beach community. The large front bedroom with access to the lanai and ocean view is the best. The condo is delightful and we highly recommend it. We rented snorkel gear for the week from Snorkel Bob's at the Mauna Lani shopping area and did our main food shopping at the Foodland there; take the turn off Hwy 19 toward the Mauna Lani resort (the last turn before the Puako exit).
Our stay on the Big Island was our favorite part of our Hawaii vacation. Puako is off the beaten path which is what we were looking for. The snorkeling at the end of the road was the best we experienced anywhere. The beach access just across the road from the condo had turtles in abundance. We did travel around the Big Island and the location is a reasonable drive to popular attractions. The front bedrooms could use a little more A/C airflow, but the fan provided helped with that.
Since we are planning to eventually move to the Big Island after retirement, we've been there several times and have stayed at various condos. Overall, I would say this was the best. We had not stayed in Puako before and really enjoyed this quiet village. It's quite scenic and relaxing. The little general store next door pretty much has everything you would need.
As for the condo, it's very well-stocked and very comfortable. The master bedroom and living room has an air conditioner although you really don't need it. The balcony has a great view of the ocean. It's on the third floor and there's an elevator.
The only drawback is no dishwasher but even this was not a big problem. We have teenagers we were able to put to work!
Overall, I would give this condo a hearty two thumbs up!
Owners were very helpful throughout the process. When I expressed interest and had questions prior to booking. Owners called me to answer questions about the area. They were very easy to work with.
Upon arrival, the condo was better than pictures and a very pleasant surprise. There was enough room for our family of five (with three teenagers) to be able to have some space, so much better than a hotel. The condo was clean and neat upon arrival. We felt like the listing was accurate in describing the amenities. Opening the windows at night we could here the soothing ocean waves.
Terrific location!! Puako is a quiet oceanfront community that is close enough to amenities to not feel isolated, but separated enough to be quiet and relaxing. In the mornings, several options were available for the family to do different activities without getting in the car including strolling or running on Puako Road, snorkeling, sun bathing on the beach, cycling, swimming in the pool, or quietly reading on the balcony. From there, our adventures were not far away. Our favorite beach on the Big Island, Hapuna, is 5 minutes away. We would go in the morning when they opened, stay for a few hours before the crowds came, go and do other activities throughout the day, and then come back at about 4 when the crowds were leaving. The surf was high while we were there and the. Boogie Boarding was excellent. Other amenities including groceries, shopping, farmers market and restaurants are only about 10 minutes away. In a pinch, the Puako General Store is right next door.
Truly a great stay!
My family of 4 had a wonderful time in this fabulous Puako condo. Loved hearing the ocean at night and sitting on the Lanai. The kitchen is small but has everything that you need to cook. We walked across the street for sunsets and watched the turtles in Puako Bay. Very much appreciated having lots of extras ( boogie boards, cooler, mats, hats etc) that made our beach time so easy. The condominium property is very well maintained and people are extremely friendly. Sonja was very attentive to our needs; we needed help opening the lanai so Sonja had a neighbor come over to show us how to do it.
