St. Mary House Rental Photos and Description

A self-catering beach lover's retreat

This lovely getaway with hillside location, nestling on the edge of beautiful Crabbe Hill Village, on the South west coast of Antigua. There are spectacular views of the Caribbean Sea, Montserrat and Nevis from the covered wrap-around veranda. The beach is an easy 3-5 minute stroll. Water sports are available from Turner's Beach and boat trips can be locally arranged to Cades Reef for some of the best diving or snorkelling in the Caribbean. Numerous beach bars and restaurants are within walking distance and the local bus service into St. John's is only footsteps away.

Cable tv is already installed

Outside: My Brother’s House is covered in bougainvillea with humming birds regular visitors to the garden and veranda.. It is set in a landscaped garden among tropical fruit trees and flowering plants and date palms, with a separate gate and pathway leading to the downstairs room. The house has private parking and is approached by a short rising access road. It is not necessary to hire a car. Small 14-seater buses are frequent, great fun and a bus stop is 3 minutes walk from the villa.

Location: Though removed from the ever-increasing number of tourists and benefiting from a friendly, caring community, it is just a 7 minute drive to Jolly Harbour, with its first-class shopping, a bank, supermarket, casino, bars and restaurants and impressive marina. St. John’s town is 20 minutes drive which has fruit and vegetable markets, fresh fish and meat markets, and excellent shopping facilities.

Restaurants: There is a variety of most charismatic restaurants, Antiguan and International. Within easy walking distance is Turner’s Beach Bar & Restaurant, OJ’s with live music twice weekly, 3 Martinis and Gibson’s Restaurant’s excellent cuisine in Crabbe Hill. Darkwood Beach Bar and Restaurant is a few minutes drive and rates among one of the best five beaches in the world. Next to Darkwood is Ffreyes Beach, mostly quiet with Dennis’ Bar & Restaurant serving local food and situated on a hill with panoramic views.

My Brother’s House is a perfect house for friends or a small family (maximum 4), looking for privacy, seclusion and guaranteed relaxation. (Not suitable for people with walking disabilities.)

A Beach Cottage Oasis

  • 5 of 5
We were seeking a different experience from area resorts and All Inclusive offers that do nothing for local economies. We found oasis at My Brothers House.

Jenny was an absolute delight. From the moment we arrived and meeting her - we knew our stay would be special.

The home is the quintessential caribbean beach cottage. It is completely outfitted. We spent nights entertaining on the huge veranda and simply taking the moments in, lighting candles found throughout the home.

This is not a plastic experience. It is an island experience. But there are conveniences. Epicurean Fine foods market in Jolly Harbor was best resource for provisioning. Specialty stores are available in English Harbour but are aimed at the yacht crowd. Also, the washing machine in home was a treat. Yes, many have this as a feature in their rentals, but again, look at this price point and you will understand immediately! Amazingly, the fee for My Brothers House is impossible to find elsewhere. A true bargain.

The location is central to Jolly Harbor (north) and English Harbour (south). A car is absolutely necessary for this kind of vacation. We had another resource on island for vehicle rental, but Jenny has discount arrrangement with one of the larger companies. Be sure to ask about it.

OJ's and Gibson's restaurants are across the street. There is also a bright yellow shack on the corner called Carvell's Cook Shop, offering lunch daily until 3pm and Saturdays until 6pm. offering fantastic baked chicken, fried fish, fish "water". Amazing. Do not be alarmed by the simplicity of Carvell's. Fantastic food is prepared here. No sign, just look for the yellow hut.

We hope to return and will certainly ask Jenny, Ian and My Brothers House to stay here again.

One month in Paradise

  • 5 of 5
My husband and I stayed here for one month in May-June 2012 and had the most incredible and wonderful time.
The house is a beautiful Caribbean cottage with a breathtaking view of the sea and we spent many evenings on the balcony enjoying a glass of wine watching the sunset. The village of Crabbe Hill is so friendly - we made many friends there amongst the staff at OJs, Gibson's and with Cavelle and Mr George who sell the most amazing food from a yellow hut at the bottom of the road. We were made to feel like family and everyone spoke to us and went out of their way to welcome us.
Transportation is easy - you can catch a local bus from the bottom of the road to anywhere on the island every 10 minutes. There are great restaurants and bars within walking distance and if you ask at the small hotel they will arrange a romantic dinner for you on the beach which was such a magical setting.
We also treated ourselves to fine dining at the Sheer Rocks restaurant where you can watch the barracudas swimming in the ocean below and spent quite a few evenings at Dennis's Cocktail bar which is in a wonderful ocean view location.
Last but not least, we would like to thank the owners Jenny and Calvin who were just wonderful.
We loved Jenny: she was attentive, fun and great company to share a drink with at the stunning Darkwood Beach (walking distance from the house). We will definitely go back if Jenny will have us - it really was a month in paradise.

Stay away or don't expect much

Stay away or don't expect much

Other than the view, this rental has nothing good to offer. We've been renting properties in the Caribbean for quite some time and this rental is definitely our worse one.
The property isn't well maintained or clean. The owner is the rudest person ever and there is no customer service at all. The listing and info provided showed A/C and weekly cleaning which is false.

We were not greeted upon arrival. Jenny, the owner, said she was too busy and she sent some neighbor to pick us up. She said she would drop by in a day or so...
During our first night, we've notice a bad smell near the bed. We realized a day later that there was a DEAD ?RAT laying beside the bed. The day before, my husband had removed another dead rat from the porch. We then called Jenny to let her know (I didn't wanted my 2 year old son to get in contact with any other dead rat), she simply told us to remove it ourselves! After letting her know that we wouldn't touch it, she then arrived and explained it was impossible that her cleaning lady didn't see that! Let me tell that this rat was there for quite a while! There was nothing left but bones and skin! 2 days later, when we got in bed, something touched my leg. It was a cockroach! We found several other ones during our stay. After those 2 episodes, we cleaned the whole house with bleach and treated with insecticide. Also, each time someone used the toilet, there was a bad smell coming from the wastewater tank. We even had to restrain the use of toilet before and during meals. After a week, we opened up the second propane tank to find out it was leaking badly. Thank God we noticed it! The owners came by only 2-3 days after being advised!

2 days before our arrival in Antigua, we were emailed that they overbooked the last 2 days of our stay and they would move us to "a nice nearby hotel". That never happened. During our first conversation with Jenny, she told us it was not her responsibility and we would have to pay and take care of the situation! After emailing Ian, she changed her mind and, only 3 days before we had to move, told us she found another house. After we moved out, we realized that we had forgotten my husband's medicated and expensive shampoo. When Jenny was called, she said in a very rude way that she had no time for this and we were expected to leave things behind for the next guests! I would never recommend this property to anyone. Antigua is just wonderful though. Just avoid this property but mostly it's owner.

Owner's Response: I would like to respond to the above review which in addition to being neither objective nor accurate factually, it is also malicious..

the renters, Marlene B stayed December 23 - January 12th..

The complaint is malicious and without merit. Marlene's main complaint is that she found a "dead rat" by the bed on their first night. Apart from the fact that the property had been booked solid previously and no one noticed such a creature shows it to be questionable at best, but what is NOT questionable, is that Marlene herself emailed my property manager one whole week later on January 28th to say,and i quote,.."everything is fine". No mention whatsoever of any rodent and evidence that this review is malicious and the real motivation is due to an overbooking of two days, for which suitable alternative accommodation was provided, but something that Marlene was not happy about The confusion stemmed from 19 of her 24 emails being headed up with the wrong date, including one containing their flight details ! ALL of these emails are available to clients on request ...

I should like to further add that Marlene was greeted on arrival, indeed she was picked up entirely free of charge from the airport ! Furthermore she mentions the absence of a/c but if she were to read the listing it was only available in the downstairs room, not the upstairs which she booked with a discount of 70 pounds - precisely because only two adults were using the house ! She further omitted to mention that we provided a cot free of charge and that her two year old ruined an entire set of bedsheets with purple market pen ( that she was not charged for) and how she can expect us to send a taxi chasing after her with he husbands medicated shampoo is beyond reasonable expectation !

Finally the personalisation of this review has rather upset me. I can assure you that it is patently a lie that i was rude to these guests at any time ! During the 4 years we have been on HR we have never received a negative feedback and indeed take pride in providing a personal service. We live in the same village and are not absentee landlords !

Jewel of the Caribbean

  • 5 of 5
A pearl is the house, with the astonishing sea view, but the island of Antigua too with her 365 beaches. The owners are very nice and friendly. The garden is full of wonderful tropical trees and flowers. The beach is few steps from the house, and the mithic bus n. 22 to St. John too. I'm sorry that my boy-friend an my mum were not to see that magic paradise. Arrivederci

3 weeks in paradise

We spent a wonderful time at My Brother's House! Miss Jenny the owner is an absolutely delightful and charming person, always ready to help and advise. Her husband Calvin knows the island very well and is a big help, too if you have any questions. The house is above a quiet little village and has a breath taking view to the sea directly to the west, so you won't miss a single sunset. Jolly Harbour with its shopping center is only five minutes away. We didn't try out public transportation, so we advice to rent a car during your stay.

4 days in Antigua

  • 5 of 5
My wife and I stayed here after 2 weeks on a boat in the BVIs. We only stayed 4 nights but wished we had stayed longer. The house was delightful as was the owner Jenny. We also found Ian Goldsmith a tremendous help when we were having travel problems. I guess the house would not be everyone's cup of tea but we loved it because it was not part of some modern holiday complex and the house was a genuine traditional Antiguan house - simple but confortable with great views of Monserrate. We felt part of the Antigua community and we felt very at home there.
