Fun Times in Cleopatra
Review Submitted: March 9, 2009
Date of Stay: February 2009
My husband and I escaped the relentless Seattle rain to stay the entire month of February in Dana Point.
Even though workers were demolishing the complex pool right outside our window, we had a wonderful time and will go back every chance we get.
The owner, Betha, is one of the kindest and most accomodating people we have ever met. Because of the construction noise, she moved us into another unit she owns in the complex until the worst of it was over, and gave us some of our money back. During the entire stay, she made us feel so cared for-- she delivered our mail, dropped off Valentine's chocolates, clucked over us in commiserating e-mails when the weather was bad for a few days, and even rounded up items we left and mailed them to us back home. She had exactly the right friendly touch.
Both of the places we stayed were clean, well-stocked, and so creatively decorated that it really added to the experience. It is obvious Betha puts her whole heart into what she does.
We were a little surprised that the "steps" to the beach description meant 156 actual steps, but that was partly because construction on The Strand across the street meant we had to use a far-away access point. Because we like exercise, we actually enjoyed the steps, and walked them several times a day. It was wonderful being right across the street from the beach, and even with February storm systems we got to walk the beach for part of almost every day.
The Dana Point location is ideal. We loved being so close to Laguna Beach, and made effortless day trips to Carlsbad, San Diego, LA, Santa Monica, and every place inbetween. Check out the singer/songwriter Tuesday nights and the weekend bands at the Marine Room in Laguna, the piano player at the incredible Montage in Laguna, the jazz brunches and weekend music at Salt Creek Grille in Dana Point, Javiers restaurant in Newport Beach and the wonderful rocky beach across the street with the frequent whale sightings and the historic cottages, take a day trip to Catalina Island (you'll see dolphins on the way!) and go hiking or visit the psychic there, have high tea at the Four Seasons in Carlsbad... you are going to have so much fun!
Owner's Response: Thanks Diana for your kind words. You and John were the best. Yes, you came at a time of action ...we were in the middle of lots of improvements... I am happy to say things are much better now with our new pool soon to be completed. We also will soon have four new beach access paths for our guests to use just across the street.. so next time you can cut out the long trail Switchback trail that you enjoyed.. You guys have to be in great shape. doing that several times a day. Also, there will soon be a million dollar funicular (similar to a Ski Lift) to deliver guests down to the beach fast. We are the only beach in Orange County that will have this available to the public. It will only take about 1 min. going down and will be great to ride back up if you choose. Thanks again for all and until next time.. Cheers. Betha
