Casa Pellegrino, The Pilgrim's House, is our quiet oasis of calm perched high above the Italian Riviera in Liguria in the north Italy. Ours is a traditional, stone built house dating from the XVI Century in Ripalta, just uphill from the heart of the gloriously quiet and convivial village of Dolcedo; just 50 minutes from Nice and not much further from Genova. Working with local craftsmen, we have gently and carefully restored la casa into a loving hideaway where we feel comfortable and finally at ease with the world. It's not just a another holiday let where we cram in as many bodies as possible, it is our home-from-home with plenty of creature comforts, antique furniture and a standard of equipment that means that it’s easy to just close the door and relax. Dolcedo is a living breathing community of perhaps little over 1,200 souls. Just about everything you need can be found in the village or within a few kilometers and, here's the best bit, there is neither an retail park nor a Starbucks for miles around...simply good wholesome food and timeless little businesses selling treasures. Liguria is a fascinating region. Despite its proximity to the bright lights of the south of France, it remains largely unspoilt and is the favoured holiday destination of the Milanese and Torinese for whom this is the nearest stretch of coast. The region is characterised by quite villages, Romanesque churches and bustling market towns where the links to the past are as strong as they have ever been and where life runs at a rather gentler pace. We are about 7km from the nearest beaches at Porto Maurizio and there are numerous other secluded suntraps dotted all along the coast.

Additional information about rental rates

  • Guest rentals are normally on a Saturday-to-Saturday basis although we will always try be as flexible as you need us to be so long as we have the availability. Weekend rentals are from Friday evening to Monday morning and, again, we will always try to accommodate your dates. There is a linen & maid Service charge of £60 (weekly).

    Arrival time 16.00 to 20.00 (later by arrangement). Departure before 11.00 please.
  • Payment: £200 to confirm booking to UK Bank account. Balance please not later than 6 weeks before rental commences.
    Security deposit: A fully refundable deposit of £250 is required for all bookings. This will be returned as soon as possible upon return of the keys.

  • The entire ground floor is given over to the bathroom. This is where the animals would have been kept years ago - it’s huge and is a totally over-indulgent use of space. There is a contemporary four-piece suite together with a Cararra marble vanity unit which also houses a new energy-efficient washing machine. And, the back wall provides plenty of storage for towels and linens and the former feeding stalls (which were hewn from the founding rock) are now put to excellent use for wine and mineral water storage!

  • Whilst our house is, in essence , a romantic hideaway, it does sleep a maximum of five guests and there is plenty of space too for dining or on the terrace. There are two delightful bedrooms, the lounge with its arched ceilings and two antique “day-beds” plus the dining room with seating for up to six. There is plenty of space too to have breakfast-for-two in the kitchen.

Decisions, decisions...: Whether you fancy an afternoon on the beach (7kms away), feel like a walk in the hills or want to pack up a picnic and explore the other hillside villages, there is so much to see and do in the area. It's so nice to be steeped in history, art and culture and pausing for nothing more than a three-hour lunch. You could be forgiven though for doing absolutely nothing at all - believe us, it's fabulous. We have also developed our own little website. The importance of food: : Our valley boasts its own mineral water and its particularly good olive oil even competes on the world stage. Other local delicacies include centre upon fish and vegetables as well as game – rabbit and wild boar are especially prized. Ligurian wine is good and getting better every year - both white and red – and, in the markets, it is often labeled simply as 'nostro' or 'ours'.

The atmosphere: : The mainstay of local life is still agriculture but tourism is important to Liguria so the welcomes are warm and genuine. The pace of life is slow and the sense of community is palpably strong – a million miles away from the glitz and bling just across the border on the Cote d’Azure.
