Thanks so much to provide such a beautiful house for us to stay in. We were both very tired but now feel much better and refreshed ! The girls had a great time also and enjoyed their time between the 2 houses ! The food you gave us was also delicious. Thank you very much - Fiona, Emily, Isabelle, Todmorden UK - August 2007.
Have you ever looked for a place that was your idea of paradise ? Then we have found it here, from the moment we were greeted by our host's Alain & Nicole we knew we had found something special. After a 4 hour drive we were welcomed like long lost friends, the cottage exceeded our wishes with 2 bottles of chilled wine and crackers fruit and Nicole's tappenade waiting for us. The standard of the cottage was without doubt the best self catering accommodation we have had in 18 years of holidaying in France. The cleanliness was of the highest standard. The equipment within was like a home from home, the help throughout holiday from our host's was fantastic, even after having a slight accident Alain offered to take me to the hospital.
When I read the previous reviews i was ever so sceptical about what i read, I WAS WRONG.
We are looking at next years holiday and will be looking at a return.
Kind regards Kevin & Yvonne Lanark Scotland
The main cottage is a tasteful architecturally renovated historic cottage with all the details and comforts one needs to feel pampered. Peacefully away down a country lane, surrounded by a sunflower fields, in a quiet village that is only 10 minutes drive from lovely Chinon, the cottage has two lovely outdoor terraces both covered and open to enjoy the summer, as well as interior spaces with modern conveniences. Our hosts were gracious and generous, providing helpful suggestions, restaurant reservations, chilled Vouvray and treats awaiting our arrival, at the same time as being considerate of privacy. This is a wonderful place to relax and enjoy the areas wonderful wine, cheese, chateaux and countryside.
The ‘Le Hammeau de verriere’ was a pleasant discovery amongst the many options for luxury self-catering accommodation in the Loire Valley. The website photographs are a good representation of the excellent standard of accommodation, without giving a hint of the accommodation’s breath-taking surroundings: the rural splendour of the Chinon region. The cottage offers perfect isolation, but within easy reach of the Chateaus, vineyards and modern amenities – supermarkets and artisan bakeries.
The accommodation is furnished to high specifications and is tastefully decorated. The gardens are beautifully maintained by the owners, Nicole and Alain, and make for a very relaxing backdrop whilst enjoying a late afternoon indulgence of cheese and wine. The welcome pack containing some of Alain and Nicole’s home produced delicacies is a thoughtful gesture that is best enjoyed at leisure. The professionalism, warmth and charm of Nicole and Alain, made our week’s stay both enjoyable and memorable.
We were one of the lucky ones to have found this wonderful place to stay. It was just right for us. It not only is a wonderful cottage but the owners are wonderful!! They are both so helpful and care a great deal about their home and their guests. The cottage has everything one could ask for. We were greeted with sparking vovray and some homemade goodies by Nicole. Nicole and Alan are wonderful gardeners and WE enjoyed the fruits of their labor. Not only was the garden a beautiful place to take a stroll but we were also given fresh fruit from the garden to eat. The cottage is very comfortable with a decor that shows the personality of the owners. The bedroom is very spacious and the king size bed is very, very comfortable. The location is very close to a lot to see and do,all within a short area. We liked staying at this location because you feel very safe ( the owners are on site) and you do not have to deal with getting in and out of a big city to visit a nearby city or Chateaux. There is a Super U grocery store right up the street and the city of Chinon is only about 10 mins. away. It is also close to a great Hospital area. All in all, I can only think of one thing missing. That would be, that we could have stayed another week!! Merci Alan et Nicole and I hope a beintote, that we see you again. Cathy and Jerry
The reviews for this extraordinary property are so glowing one might wonder if they are too good to be true...they aren't. We truly can't speak highly enough about our experience in this pristine and private, beautifully renovated cottage in the lush Loire Valley. We were able to experience the magic of France-the countyside, the history and the charm-from our own private retreat, a 19th century home meticulously renovated for the 21st century while still retaining the character of the original building (massive ceiling beams, 20 inch thick stone walls) and situated on a large and beautiful property teeming with flowers, fruit trees and vineyard.
Our hosts, Alain and Nicole were most welcoming and accommodating; just a joy to interact with. Besides a cottage equipped with everything you can imagine (and things we hadn't expected-luxurious robes, lavender sachets on our pillow, bedside chocolate, wine from their vineyard and YUMMY homemade treats made by Nicole straight from their garden) we experienced the much needed 'R&R' we came for-rest, relaxation, recuperation, reconnecting, renewal. .... ahhh...I wish we were still there. If we ever have the opportunity to return to France we'll have no need to look for a home base-we've already found it, our cottage at the end of the lane in Thizay. Alain and Nicole, merci beaucoup for a perfect vacation.
Thank you to Alain and Nicole for providing such a wonderful home away from home in such a beautiful setting. Alain and Nicole were the friendliest and most accommodating owners we've ever encountered in our travels, allowing for privacy but also very helpful, warm and always there when you need them. They were a delight and we hope to go back so that we can find the time next time to sit on the patio and have a glass of wine together. We loved Nicole's homemade tapenade - the best I've had.
The home is as everyone describes, clean, well equipped, quiet, comfortable and with unique and interesting antiques and decor. They provide binders full of local information neatly categorized by subject - we used the Michelin map extensively, even though we had GPS on our rental car.
I was surprised at the size of the upper bedroom - it is very spacious, something I could not see from the pictures. The house windows look small from the outside, but there is plenty of light and with Alain's beautiful lighting plan you can have as much or as little light as you want in the evening. The patio and the deck are beautiful in the morning and in the evening - the setting is pastoral in a little valley surrounded by farms and forest. The drive to Chinon is only 10 minutes and a lovely drive. There is a larger grocery store on the way to Chinon which is convenient and very well stocked - everything you need.
I can't say enough good things about Alain and Nicole and their lovely home. It's a find and we truly hope to return. If you are thinking about which part of the Loire Valley to stay in, I highly recommend this area. We would have missed out on staying in such a relaxing and peaceful place if we had taken the advice of a well know travel writer and stayed in Amboise. It's nice, but doesn't compare with the beauty of Chinon and the surrounding areas.
The Vallée de la Loire is a UNESCO World Heritage and is well known for its many castles, churches and abbeys. The most famous is the one in Fontevraud where the kings Henri II Plantagenet and Richard 1st 'the Lion Heart' are buried. At a short distance, you will be able to visit several castles like Chinon, Azay le Rideau, Ussé, Langeais, Villandry, Saumur ... The Futuroscope of Poitiers is less than 1 hour by car. The wines of Chinon, Saumur, Bourgueil are one of the most famous wines of the Loire and wine tasting can be done and will be the highlight of you stay.
