Four of us stayed in Clara 1 in March 2008 - we loved it, though next time we come, we will rent both flats. The flat is medieval with a modern twist: beautifully and colourfully furnished with interesting pieces and pictures from around the world. The sun terrace is fabulous; although it wasn't warm enough in March to eat out in the evenings, it was great for star gazing and for lunch. The perfect situation would be for two couples to rent both apartments and share the terrace.
We had everything we needed for a comfortable stay and did most of our cooking there - Puglia is food heaven! There are many markets and great food shops in the area. One of the highlights of our trip was a visit to the olive oil co-operative in Ostuni (a car is essential).
Cisternino is a fascinating ancient town with a maze of traffic-free cobbled streets to get lost in; it was very quiet as we were ahead of the season and not all the cafes were open, or had tables outside, but this gave us a real feel for non-touristy life in Puglia.
We would highly recommend Clara 1 and intend to return as soon as possible with friends to sample more delights of Puglia.
The town of Cisternino is perfectly perched in the hills that run down the spine of Puglia. As you drive down from Bari to the east is the stunning Adriatic and to the west the gentle slopes that lead through ancient and beautiful olive groves . Through these and then the meandering road takes you through tress and woods till you swing round and find Cisternino rising above you.
The town is ringed with ancient walls and the winding cobbled street lead to a staircase up to the apartment and a beautiful roof top terrace. This commands a stunning view across the town and is topped with a clear blue Italian sky. The apartment is down a few steps which lead into a beautiful bright sitting room with a neat kitchen to the side. Through here you go into the first bedroom which is spacious and comfortable and then through to a neat vestibule. Off of here are the bathroom flooded with sun from a high skylight and the second bedroom opposite.
The terrace is bathed in sunlight and is cool and inviting in the evening. As the apartment is in the centre of the town the cafes and restaurants are a short walk, making breakfast on one of the many cafe terraces an easy delight. The many restaurants provide a wide variety of delicious cuisine and of course the many delicacies of the region.
Cisternino is in the middle of the Puglian peninsula so trips to the many towns of the area are easy and relaxed. The coast is spotted with wonderful fish restaurants serving freshly caught fish and seafood which is delicious and makes a day on the beach relaxing and inciting.
The apartment and the town are both relaxing and rejuvenating and I recommend them both highly.
I am looking forward to returning and enjoying this wonderful part of Italy again.
We arrived in Cisternino after Rome on our Italian trip from Japan. We planned to do some road trip and to see more of an Italy's countryside. With our great delight to find this fabulous apartment after a very quick and easy drive from Bari airport. The apartment is in a superb location of a charming town of Cisternino in Puglia, an enchanting medieval village on top of a hill and surrounded by olive groves and vineyards. We were very impressed with Its historic centre which characterised by its architecture of the 16th and 17th centuries, the white washed buildings.
The apartment we stayed in was Clara 1 and The main feature of the apartment is its cosiness and good sleeping apace with two double bedrooms. The interior is stylishly furnished with white washed wall and stone flooring. Every tiny details are carefully decorated. We love this sunny and airy apartment where the entrance leads to the terrace. The sun terrace is the fabulously relaxing place with a hot tub!! We spent lots of great memorable afternoons by the terrace with glasses of wine and sweet sage we brought with us.
I needed to do a some work and emails with Tokyo and within 2 minute walk to the town's square through adorable tiny walkways, there is a chic coffee shop with free wi-fi and a very friendly owner where photos of Sofia Loren are everywhere on the wall. And we could stay there as long as we wanted. There are so many great places to eat and there are some special restaurants where you can choose your own meat and they will cook it for you. The food in Puglia is so fantastic even simple tomato taste so fresh and good. More of our delight we found a restaurant which served tuna sashimi and wasabi!
This apartment is so special and it made our trip to Italy very memorable. HIghly recommended!

We made it to Cisternino in the middle of a cloudburst and were delighted to take refuge in this bright, warm and cosy apartment. When we recovered, we were so pleased to have every modern comfort at hand - and provided in great style. It is such a lovely apartment, you could easily see yourself staying for months.
Morning sun and coffee on the terrace was a brilliant way to start the day which included a nip around the corner to collect the chocolate croissants for breakfast and foccacia for the beach (we found a great place about 30 mins away Torre Pozzella and one 15 mins away in Torre Canne). Cisternino is an amazing place in itself and this apartment is snuggly tucked away down an attractive passage where it is quiet but within 1 minute you are in the heart of (at least during the summer) some great music and entertainments.
It is so nice to go to a place where you can slow right down - you can easily go to 5 shops just to do a standard supermarket shop (there are some supermarkets too). Cisternino is noted for slow eating and for excellent food which we enjoyed. Eating in was easy as it had everything, particularly for pasta and local produce.
We have no hesitation in recommending this apartment to anyone. It is ideal for getting away in style for a complete change of scene.
Earlier reviews confirm our experience of Clara 1 - a wonderful surprise at the top of the steep steps. Wheelie luggage or rucksacks essential. We loved the cool, natural colours and overall feel of the apartment, - very tasteful - and especially the bathroom - brilliantly designed. It is necessary to go through the larger bedroom to reach the 'French' double, - bed linen in both excellent, towels plentiful and good. The roof terrace is delightful - we had it to ourselves - and the very large umbrella is helpful during the day. Two minutes for fresh bread in the morning, also worth finding the farm outlet for the best ricotta, and then each excursion was a discovery - so much to see in nearby towns, and we loved the endless olive groves, with strong red earth and wonderful shapes. Swam somewhere different almost every day. Cisternino is well placed for outings, but less touristy in itself than other towns., and the market is a real joy. We would love to go again, and the two apartments together would be excellent for up to six people. Probably best for adults who don't mind steep steps, are interested in getting around, and who appreciate a little gem to return to each evening.
I stayed with 2 friends in both Clara 1 & 2 for 2 weeks in May 2008. The two apartments are connected by the sun terrace though they have their own entrances and living areas. Both are very well found and comfortable and attractively furnished and decorated. They are two floors up in a quiet part of the old historic walled centre of the town, which is traffic free and so you are spared the pollution of both noise and petrol fumes! The roof/sun terrace proved ideal for leisurely breakfasts (fresh croissants purchased from a baker's about 4 doors away!), lunches and sunny siestas & also quiet evening drinks "at home" if we didn't fancy the short walk to one of the many excellent local restaurants or bars. May is a good month to go if you enjoy walking and exploring as the weather was pleasantly warm but not too hot, and ahead of the main tourist season so not overcrowded either. We found a myriad of tracks and paths through the villages and farms in the surrounding countryside which was gloriously full of colour as all the flowers and orchards were in full bloom, though we did find the local maps the town tourist office provided needed some rather creative interpretation! We had a hired car, which was invaluable as it meant we could take trips to the coast and visit some of the fascinating towns and cities nearby. It was the first experience of Puglia for all of us, but hopefully not the last!
I would highly recommend both apartments as a great place to spend a holiday that could be as relaxing or as energetic as you want it to be! I have added the 55+ age-group into the recommendation as we did all fall into this category but I would warn against it for anyone that has difficulty in climbing stairs or walking - active over 55s however, would have no problems - and there are plenty of those!
The apartments are situated in the historical centre of Cisternino, Puglia, one of the most beautiful small towns in Italy. Located in the 'Valle D' Itria' only a few kilometers from the beaches of the Adriactic and many surrounding tourist attractions and important historical sites : the grottoes of Catellaanna, the ancient town of Egnazia, the stunning baroqueness of Lecce, the Trulli's of Alberobello, Ostuni appley called the white city, the wilderness sanctury of Torre Guaceto, the safari park 'zoosafari' in Fasano, the potteries of Grottaglie and the cave houses of Matera. Further south, one has the wilderness of the penisular and stunning clear blue waters of the Mare Ionio and the port of Gallipoli. Puglian food in famous for being some of the best in Italy and there are resturants and cafes spilling out into the street in every village and town. Brindis is 45 mins by car and Bari is 60 mins in a car.
