One has to go beyond Naples and the Amalfi Coast and head further down to the unspoilt Cilento region, in southern Campania. It boasts beautiful coastline, lapped by the crystal clear waters of the Tyrrhenian Sea, and a wild, mountainous interior sprinkled with historic villages. Much of the area is covered by the Cilento and Vallo di Diano national park and is listed as a Unesco world heritage site. The Cilento region has inspired poets and scholars for centuries, such as the French dramatist Henri René Leonormant (1882-1951), who wrote “Cilento, a huge garden with picturesque contours”. It is a land of myth and legend that offers spectacular scenery, authentic, ancient villages and towns and endless expanses of olive groves. One of Cilento’s greatest attractions are its dreamy seaside resorts, some of which have received every year the Blue Flag and other awards also from the Italian environmental group Legambiente.
