The ancient village of Lurais (1st mentioned in the year 936 AD) has about 70 'permanent' residents (officially 230) and apart from peace and French 'savoir vivre' it offers you a café-bar, a phone box, a medieval church of the12th Century, two castles, and a lot of beautiful landscapes for hiking and cycling. Lurais is located on the slope of the river 'La Creuse', where you can go swimming, canoeing and fishing. The village is regularly visited by itinerant traders (butcher, bakers, fishmongers, fruit / vegetables).
In the surroundings there are many pretty villages and towns, especially Pouligny (renowned for its goat cheese of the same name), Fontgombault with Monastery (Gregorian monk-chants, shop with agricultural monastery products and interesting pottery), Angles sur l'Anglin (picturesque town with a huge ancient castle ruin and the very romantic and natural river courses of the 'Anglin' and 'Gartempe'). Also very nice is the nature protection reserve of 'La Brenne' with a vast lake district and a significant bird life.
La Roche Posay lies at a distance of 18 km, renowned in France since the gallic-roman period as thermal bath and famous worldwide for the manufacturer of dermatological products of the same name.
For those who are interested in the Loire Valley châteaus, we can recommend the Chateau Azay-le-Rideau and the Chateau Chenonceau. Both - and of course most of the others - are easily reached in a day trip and really impressing. In the surrounding area there are also a number of smaller, less famous beautiful castles and country estates. The Atlantic coast is not around the corner but is also accessible in a day trip. Maps, information, excursions and hiking suggestions are available on site at the Mairie de Lurais (Lurais town hall) and in the tourist informations in Angles, Le Blanc and La Roche-Posay.
This is just a small selection. Take your time to explore the many tiny streets and squares on-site . The area around La Chatre has been described by George Sand (1804-1876) in her works.
