Coral Bay Cottage Rental Photos and Description

Cottage, 1 Bedroom + Convertible bed(s), 1 Bath, (Sleeps 2-4

Catch and Keep is just what so many budget-minded travelers dream of finding. For less than the price of a condominium you can experience living in a real island home. The cottage is comfortable, tastefully decorated, and best of all, authentic. The affordable pricing may let you stay longer, or treat yourself to a day sail or massage. With today's emphasis on 'eco-tourism' you can experience how a 'traditional' island-style home fits into its environment in ways that appreciate the culture and architecture of the island and respects it unique environment.

In scenic Coral Bay, 'Catch 'n' Keep' is a charming, West Indies-style home. Just ten to 15 minutes from nearby white sand beaches, the cottage sits on a half acre of wooded hillside, with a panoramic view of the Carolina valley and its stone sugar mill ruins. Plants and trees native to the environment have been encouraged and a large variety of native birds feel at home in the neighborhood.

Catch 'n' Keep is nestled in a quiet cul de sac off a secondary road with only neighbors passing by, and there is shaded parking right next to the entrance. Two small markets nearby make life easier, as do a choice of eateries for those who really want to relax! Well-sited to catch the Tradewinds, the cottage is fully screened and has Hunter ceiling fans. Six large double doors open onto two covered decks where you can grill out with a Weber gas grill and dine in the fresh air. Or lounge in the hammocks and enjoy the country view, tropical breezes, and beautiful evening sky.

The full kitchen is charmingly decorated with folk art and hand-painted ceramics collected by the owner in her travels. The bathroom features native stonework in the shower and full amenities. A comfortable queen-size bed with four pillows and lovely cotton linens awaits you.

The cottage is thoughtfully appointed for your comfort, and includes guidebooks, WiFI,Cable,DVD and a CD collection, lots of vacation reading, and games. You will also find beach chairs, beach towels, and coolers for your beach days. A variety of restaurants, eclectic shopping, kayaking, hiking, and live music are conveniently nearby in the Coral Bay area. Less developed than the Cruz Bay side of island, you will find Coral Bay less trafficked, more relaxing and exactly your dream of what an island get-away should be like!

Guestbook comments from the owner
"All will be revealed" was the last answer to our many questions when my husband and I were deciding where to spend the month of February, 2003. We were met at the dock and transported to your lovely mountain home overlooking the valley on St. John. We loved the spacious open one room home with a large two-sided deck with a table (seating 4 or more), hammock, and full laundry facilities. The Weber gas outdoor grill and full

kitchen made cooking and eating at home a pleasure. The

king-size bed was wonderful and Cable TV helped us enjoy the sports channel. We appreciated Judy's maps and helpful tips on places to visit, eat, and find out of the way beaches. The beach chairs and coolers were a plus when we wanted to be away for the day. We enjoyed our stay with you so much we came again in 2004 and you made us very welcome. Now we are

good friends! I highly recommend your home to anyone who wants a romantic, lovely, quiet getaway!

Originally from Massachusetts, retired to St. John after 30 years teaching Northern New Mexico. Travel and learning from different cultures (at heart, we are more the same than different! in what we want for our children, our lives, our world).

Judith Kane purchased this cottage in 2001

I have tried to keep the cottage comfortable for your visit, while offering you the chance to experience something different, 'island-y' and respectful of the local St. Johnian culture. My guest reviews affirm it succeeds.

Located on the less-developed side of island, private-feeling yet close to all Coral Bay has to offer, this is an opportunity to EXPERIENCE what living in an actual West Indian style 'island house' might be like, rather than a concrete condo-style rental. 'Green' living is highlighted (working with native plants only, adapting to terrain rather forcing it to fit building plans, plus simpler, timeless solutions to daily living. Birds abound and so does peace and quiet.

My husband and I were at Catch 'n Keep for 4 nights in April 2014 and were utterly delighted with our stay.

Judy has thought of everything - detailed and helpful guidance for finding the cottage, everything you could possibly need while you are there including beach chairs, beach towels, great books, maps and guidebooks for St. John, puzzles & games, comfortable bed, plenty of bath towels, a fully-equipped kitchen, a big porch, cheery interior with a sunny, cottage-y feel - really, it has it all!

Judy herself is lovely. She lives just below on the ground floor, available should you need her, but always respectful of her guests' privacy. The power on St. John (and on St. Thomas!) went out for a few hours one evening and Judy called up to let us know she had left a bucket of water on the step as a temporary solution which we did not request or expect.

Things to know before you go: #1 - the road up to Catch n' Keep will freak you out the first time you drive it. The driveway is a tad steep... You'll get used to it in short order and it is typical of the roads in Coral Bay - and all of St. John, in fact. You will definitely need a Jeep with high clearance. #2 - Buy your groceries in Cruz Bay before you drive out to the cottage. #3 - There is no view of the ocean from Catch n' Keep, but there is a lovely broad and deep view of the valley. You'll feel like you're in a tree house surrounded by flowers and birds. You won't miss that ocean view - the price more than compensates and you can spend the day at the beach looking at the ocean.

Catch 'n Keep is charming. We have been traveling to St. John for 20 years and have felt more and more frustrated as the years tick by that rental prices seem to keep climbing. The price at Catch n Keep is better than you will find anywhere else for such a nice place. The breezes blow through day and night keeping you cool. Everything is spotlessly clean. Your vacation will truly begin the moment you arrive.

The owner was fantastic right from the start. Her sage advice on how best to prepare for our trip with hints as to where to shop, car rentals, ferries and what to expect once we arrived, made us aware we had landed with a winner. She is a delight; fun loving, outgoing and concerned without being overbearing.

The cottage is charming, better in person than the photos on line. It’s breathtaking to sit on the deck with mountains that surround you. Birds are everywhere. We spent quite a bit of time reading, enjoying the scenery. The house itself is well stocked with every kind of device you might wish for – TV, DVD player, internet connection, books, games and even iPod speakers. The kitchen had everything we needed to make meal preparation easy.

The amount of information gathered for guests - a mammoth loose leaf filled with news clippings and articles along with books published about the area – provided us with recommendations for activities to keep us delighted. Each day, we struck out to a different beach to discover new sea life and coral formations we never would have found on our own.

Having a car is a must. The owner made that clear. We were concerned about driving on the left and the narrow roads. It isn’t for the faint of heart, but if you drive slowly and ignore the locals who might honk at you, you will soon adapt. I felt like I was on a freeway by the time I drove in St. Thomas to get back to the airport.

I can’t wait to return next year. St. John never disappoints me and Lower Carolina makes it even more alluring.

Dear Judith,

I doesn't look like our dates will work this time, but after much searching around the various websites, we have finally found the person and place we want to stay with for next time. I will tuck your email in a safe place, and look forward to recontacting you at our next opportunity for a get-a-way.

Warm regards,

PS I think your policies are enlightened and sensible. What a relief to find a landlord who is human...

This was the first trip to St John for my husband and I and Catch and Keep couldn't have been more perfect. When we arrived Soft rope lighting lined the walkway and there were breathtaking views from the deck. There was soft music playing in the background and right then we knew this experience was going to be more than we expected. We were only able to book 5 days here because it was already reserved so had a second home lined up when we left Judy's amazing Catch and Keep cottage. All I can say is when we went to the new location we felt so sad, we immediately wanted to return. Nestled In the mountains with amazing tropical breezes and beautiful landscape, it was pure relaxation. St John has some of the most beautiful beaches in the world and we would hesitate to leave because we had all we needed right there. It was also incredibly clean and beautifully decorated. Then there was Judy! She made our stay complete. Don't hesitate, you won't regret it.

Highly recommend--this beautiful cottage and its amenities are nicely maintained. Amazing view, breezy, lovely garden, birds everywhere, extremely secluded. Thoughtful items such as a binder full of articles, pamphlets, and maps of the island were very helpful. Our favorite hike was Rams Head (incredible views yet pretty short), and Tourist Trap restaurant right next to it! Judy is the sweetest ever, and sent lots of helpful information for trip planning right away. This is not a formal hotel experience--imagine staying at a favorite relative's guest house; we loved Judy immediately.

Advice-- if you are going during a busy season, make sure you are able to reserve a jeep for the time frame (unlike us). The compact car we rented barely made it, a knuckle gripping experience every trip up and down the steeper parts of the bumpy dirt road.

Owner's Response: Wish I could make guests like my road the way they seem to like me....
Seriously, road needs an 'explanation'. There are only a few 'government maintained' paved roads on STJ. The majority are 'estate roads', graded dirt roads that are either paved over eventually by neighborhood associations, or paved only in certain sections that become problematic after heavy rains, or not paved at all then either periodically graded by neighborhood collection, or simply left 'as is'. None of these roads are considered bad if you live here full time because our bar is lower - having learned and accepted life in an island "paradise". The reaction comes from visitors who are used to total pavement and 'tax dollars at work' in maintenance. All villa rental companies on STJ recommend you rent a car with a high suspension and 4WD...and all STJ car rental companies supply only these type of vehicles in different sizes & price ranges. STT however, has lots of car rental agencies that offer a wider selection of economy, low slung vehicles BECAUSE ALL STT ROADS ARE PAVED, and those cars are fine there. So here are some helpful suggestions for potential visitors to STJ: reserve your rental car ASAP while selection is good; if you rent STT and are promised a high suspension model but on arrival they have 'substituted' a different model (it happens during busy season), don't panic. You can make it up STJ roads but the secret is low gear, steady gas, and roll over what you consider obstacles; if you have more than 2 people in your party, compare the total $ needed for 1)airport shuttle to ferry dock, 2)ferry ticket & baggage charge with that of getting your rental in STT and bringing it over to STJ on car barge. For 2 people, its a toss-up between passenger ferry or barge...your choice which works best around your flight arrival time. For 3 or more, barge costs less. Either way it boils down to the flight times dictate subsequent decisions, and your personal tolerance bar, and spirit of adventure or wish to avoid all surprises on a first time trip must be weighed in the mix. Last caveat is AVIS and HERTZ here are not like what you are used to stateside. On STJ, all car rentals are family-owned business with names you will not be familiar with, but who are all dependable and who know their own island and what is needed. If you do opt for renting on STT and coming over on barge, I help you out with all of that, so not a problem. Judith Kane

Too many times have we looked on VRBO for a place to stay on St John on the "less busy" (although none of the island is really "busy") side of the island and thought, "oh myyyy, what if it's in one of those less desirable areas." Well - - think that no more and book this place. We rented in December for a couple of days before a wedding. We wanted to be on our favorite side of the island and this fit the bill. It is absolutely perfect for two who like a little peace and quite. Yet, it's extremely convenient to all the wonderful things in Coral. Just minutes down the mountain to Love's grocer, a few mins from Salt Pond Bay for the best snorkeling you will find on island, and not far from Calabash either. Catch n Keep is well decorated - in fact, we realized how much we have in common with the owner by looking at all the sweet touches on the place. It's very well maintained - in PERFECT condition, and the view is breathtaking. While it's not an ocean view, you feel like you're in a tropical rain forest and that is just fabulous. We saw gorgeous sunsets with a glass of wine and some cheese on the porch one evening and had early, early morning coffee with the hummingbirds to watch the sun come up out there too. The porch is a treat! Miss Judy keeps it well maintained with comfy furniture and it's super clean --- it felt just like home! And speaking of Miss Judy - She's awesome to deal with. Very responsive (in the middle of the evening when we needed to find our way in the dark, she met us at Love's to direct us to her place!), she is just below you in case you need her, but you would never know she's there. She is also very knowledgeable about the island and has tons of treats in store for you, if it's your first time.

We are already planning our next St John trip in April and will stay at Catch n Keep!

Handy to Coral Bay, on dead end road with only neighborhood traffic offers privacy, no traffic or construction noise, and peaceful setting. Mature landscaping with native plants (bananas, papayas) and lots of birds. An important renting consideration is driveway and parking are close to cottage, so you do not have long flights of hillside steps to navigate to carry luggage and groceries as in other rentals that have you park on main road away from rental.
