A lovely, self-catering hillside villa, Maiandros has stunning views from sea-facing balconies and terraces, looking west over the private pool. It’s a 5-minute walk from the village centre shops and 14 from the sandy beach at Almirida. The villa design is bold, dramatic and built to a high standard with full insulation for year-round comfort. It is built up high – over 350 feet above sea level – and cooled by prevailing winds through double and triple aspect windows, with mosquito screens in the bedrooms. The entrance leads into a huge open sitting and dining area with views in all directions. The large family kitchen is equipped with all appliances. A wide staircase rises to an imposing gallery with more wonderful views. Both main bedrooms overlook the private pool and have en-suite shower rooms. There is a large family bathroom and the third bedroom has views to the east over the shady rear garden cut into the rock. Memorable evening views over the pool and from the roof terrace.

Maiandros Villa is in a short private road, in a quiet, semi-rural wooded setting on a hillside, giving panoramic views over Souda Bay from the house, the balconies and the pool terrace. It is only 5 minutes' walk to the village centre where there are several tavernas, bars and food shops. A 14-minute walk leads down to the coastal town of Almirida where there are more shops, tavernas, car hire and a sheltered bay with soft sandy beaches and sailing. A number of tavernas in the area feature live Greek music in the evenings. Even a fortnight is too short to enjoy Crete’s huge variety of history, archaeological sites, landscape, beaches and activities, like walking, bird watching, lazing, painting, swimming and meeting the hospitable people. It’s a large island – over 160 miles long with three high mountain ranges and a population of 600,000. Charming, ancient Chania with its Venetian harbour, boat trips, quaint streets and lovely shops is 30 minutes by car.

Bedroom 3 gives access to a roof terrace with breathtaking views over Souda Bay and the village below, an ideal spot for breakfasts or to enjoy an evening drink as the sun sets over Souda Bay with Chania in the distance.

Notes: The house is furnished and equipped for the owners' use when it is not let so Maiandros is more like a private house than a holiday villa. Numerous balconies and terraces give a wide choice of sun or shade. The site is cut out of a steep hillside, creating a shady rear rock garden. To the west of the house a wooded hillside gives a semi-rural feel. Bedrooms are equipped with effective fans and Bedrooms 1 and 2 have windows on adjacent walls that create a through-flow of cooler evening air. The pool is safe for most ages, ranging from 1m to a maximum of 1.5m depth. Sunsets over the bay and pool can be breathtaking. We consider the house is not suitable for young or adventurous children. To enjoy the panoramic views it is built up high, creating dangers from stone steps and high balconies. Pool maintenance and a weekly linen change are included in the rental. There is a mobile phone with a PAYG local SIM card for guests' use.

Things to do: Crete is overflowing with opportunities for a memorable holiday, whether you want history, activities, sightseeing or just lazing in the sun. There are more archaeological sites than the Greeks know what to do with, most notably the Minoan sites of Knossos and Phaestos, but there is a fascinating one almost on the doorstep at Aptera. Here there are huge, well-preserved Roman cisterns, a ruined villa and a roman theatre recently discovered and being excavated. It's rewarding to drive into the nearby foothills and enjoy a friendly welcome and a way of life we've forgotten. There's a spectacular circular drive over the mountains to the south, through rugged terrain, and then east along the coast to return through green pastures – a good cross-section of the island.

Beautiful Maiandros

We spent a week (far too short!) in this fantastic villa in August and cannot fault it in any way. Directions to the villa are clear and precise and you arrive not quite beleiving your luck to be staying somewhere so special. The property is exceptionally well equipped with anything you could ever need, the bedding is of a high quality, bathrooms a pleasure to use, kitchen so well planned and the pool and outside areas just wonderful. There are so many balconies to choose from, all with spectacular views that you will never tire of, you just don't want to stray very far from it at all! When you can drag yourself away the village of Plaka is a pleasant stroll away with two good tavernas and a well stocked mini market. Almirida just a little further has everything you could want, a beautiful beach and plenty of places to eat. There are many places to visit and none too far away, lots of details thoughtfully provided with maps and guides to help. As soon as you arrive it is clear that this spotlessly clean villa is a much loved home and a big thank you to Jeremy and Erica for sharing it with us, thank you too for the cleaning ladies who do a very thorough job and I look forward to reading the book!
We have been visiting Crete for 20 years and have never stayed in the same accommodation twice but now that we have discovered Maiandros that will change and we look forward to our next visit, hope the cat and her kitten will still be there!

Perfect Crete Holiday

We have just returned from our second holiday at this gorgeous villa. The views and sunsets from Maiandros are spectacular and the villa set in a quiet location with lovely pool and outside eating area. It is extremely well equipped and maintained with top quality linen, crockery etc and provides you with everything you neeed for a truly wonderful holiday.The welcome pack is much appreciated if like us you arrive in the early hours of the morning. Books and maps of Crete at the villa give you ample ideas of where to visit. The two restaurants and village shop are only a few minutes walk away in Plaka square and the villagers are very friendly.The beach at Almydia is lovely with plenty of places for lunch by the sea. Take a drive over the mountains to the south side of the Island and see wild mountain goats, gorges and amazing scenery. We will certainly be coming back.

The charm of Maiandros

It is the attention to detail which makes staying in Maiandros such a wonderful experience: ranging from the detailed information provided by the owners re. directions, the house, the area, etc. to the simple things, so often lacking, such as more than ample numbers of chairs and sun beds. Every time we thought, 'We could do with a .....................', within a few seconds we found whatever it was we required. Every view from every balcony proved an additional delightful surprise. In the middle of August, the automatic watering system still provides the little garden areas with colour. Even the lighting in and around the villa has been given thought. Add to this the climate, the views, the beaches, the mountains and the little restaruants in Plaka square and one can't fail to enjoy an unforgettable holiday. We have already been twice and intend to return again. This exceeds the normal holiday business transaction such that it is a privilege to stay at Maiandros.
