Overview

County Donegal Cottage Rental Photos and Description

Turf fire, quiet walks, deserted beaches, red sunsets, traditional music.

Your traditional thatched cottage is part of a development of ten self catering thatched cottages nestled snugly into the Donegal rock scape, commanding panoramic views of sea, mountain and off-shore islands. This year turn the clock back. Discover the magic of sleeping under a real thatch roof. Waken to the warbling of the lark. Taste the salt spray on the sea breeze. Listen to the roar of the Atlantic breakers. Forget about the outside world as you gather with your loved ones around a blazing turf fire. Walk our winding roads. Marvel at God's wonderful creation. Pick a bunch of wild flowers and present them to a loved one. Go for a 'hole in one' at the stunning 6th hole on our local golf links. Try out the excellent fishing. Enjoy the 'craic' in Leo's Tavern and savour the music of your ancestors. Take a trip to Tory Island, the last outpost of Gaelic civilisation. Return home refreshed in mind, soul and body. Spacious accommodation for up to 7 persons. We regret, no pets.

Golf: Cruit Island golf links is located on Cruit Island just down the road from the cottage. Although it is only a nine-hole course it has got many rave reviews in golfing magazines and is widely regarded as one of the very finest 9-hole courses in Ireland. Indeed the different tee-boxes on the back nine make it a virtual 18-hole course. The sea, mountain and off-shore island views from almost every tee and green are truly spectacular. It is almost impossible to come off this course feeling less than fully refreshed. The par 3 sixth hole is a real gem. Depending on wind conditions you could find yourself taking anything from a driver to a nine iron for your approach shot. If you under club you are into the sea ! If you over club you are into the sea !! Green fees are very reasonable and visitors to our cottage are offered a 20% discount.

Fishing: Your cottage offers an excellent base for either the fishing enthusiast or indeed anyone who just wants to try his hand at catching a few mackerel from the flat ledge just behind cottage no. 5. Within walking distance of the cottage you can bottom fish off the rocks for specimen wrasse, spin for mackerel and pollock or beach cast for flounder, dab and dogfish. A purpose built sea angling boat operates out of Burtonport, just five miles away, while the game angler has access to 130 small lakes of the Rosses Fishery.........all within a few miles radius of the local town of Dungloe.

Walking: Above all Cruit Island is a walkers paradise. We will give you details of seven wonderful walks, each one starting at your own cottage and returning right back to your cottage. The Rock scape, the hidden sandy coves, the winding side roads will all fill your senses and thoroughly refresh you. Very often you will be the only person within sight. Listen for the cuckoo or the warbling notes of the lark and keep a lookout for the rare and protected chough.

Step Back in time

I spotted these on these cottages on the internet some 11 years ago when researching our next trip back to Ireland and luckily kept the info. On a fluke, we acquired bargain airfare during July and decided to "get away from it all". Donegal Thatched Cottages meets that definition. The description is accurate and the pictures clearly display the facilities. Our cottage was clean and fairly well maintained. The road is single lane once you cross the bridge, with intermittent pull-offs that allow two cars to pass. Although relatively close, it takes about 25 minutes to go to Dunglow for groceries. It is for this reason that we did not venture out to the pubs in the evenings, as I didn't want to navigate the road at night with a single Guinness under the belt. I must admit that I missed the internet and TV a little, but brought a portable DVD player and numerous Irish movies that I have collected for entertainment. The cottages are excellent replicas, and the turf fires were quiet enjoyable, even with the unseasonably high temps we were experiencing. Scenery is unlike most other parts of Ireland that we have visited. Connor and Mary were a delight. The furniture is not especially comfortable, and a couch and an outside grill would be a nice addition. Ireland was experiencing a drought as no rain had fallen for three weeks! As such, the midges were out in swarms when the wind died down. These tiny critters ate me alive and left my wife (not very tasty to them) alone, so we left two days early. If you want to step back in time and get away from it all, then this is the place and we would definitely recommend staying here. Be aware that utilities are a seperate bill, but not unreasonable. Be sure to bring bug repellant or benadryl spray in the summertime and opt for a seaview cottage. Larry & Kelly

We arrived on saturday in the cottage and stayed for a week, The same evening made a lovely fire and were de-stressing. The cottage provided every thing we needed.
It was a very cosy ( gezellig) home with wooden furnerture and an open fire place.
rocking chairs, , good lihgt to read a book ( no tv) a kitchen with dishwasher en washing machine! and all sorts of pots and pans.
The bedrooms were comfortable with patchwork bedcovers,
We loved to be there and made a beautiful walk along the shore and some nice trips with the car,
Refreshed we made our further way to the south of Ireland.
Conor is a very friendly host.

A healing place

  • 5 of 5
My husband and I spent 8 days in Donegal Thatched Cottages on Cruit Island - a healing place. The cottages overlook the Atlantic Ocean, you find several beautiful sandy beaches close to the houses -and we did actually swim every day-, you can do many different great walks around the island from the cottages, the sunset is great...... And from the house interesting sights are within reach - we spent a fine day in Glenveagh National Park and another in Donegal. Cruit Island and the thatched cottages are wonderful. We returned home refreshed in heart and mind.

Incredible, once in a lifetime experience

  • 5 of 5
In planning our dream vacation to Ireland, specifically County Donegal, we were hoping to avoid the typical tourist trap. We succeeded! The cottage was spotless, and had everything we needed (for up to 7 people!!) for a self-catering experience. As it was in the middle of our vacation, it gave us a chance to truly rest, get our laundry done, and sit by the turf fire each evening (yes, it was that chilly) to read and reconnect with each other.
Just 15 minutes from the town of Dungloe, you can buy what you need for food supplies. Get a small box of laundry detergent to do your laundry. Make your purchases BEFORE your arrival so that you can immediately be at HOME and go on a fantastic walk or hike without wasting any time!
The location is remote, which really worked for us. However, it was within driving distance of Glenveigh National Park and Castle--MUST SEE!
The following day we drove down to Bunglass Cliffs, also know as Slieve League. We stopped in Ardara at a little shop, and the delightful merchant recommended that we take the "crappy" road since that was where we'd see the best scenery.
So off we went, cutting across the county. Although it lengthened our travel time considerably, we were in no rush. You can stop at a cave (which we did not do), or stop at a peaceful, truly beautiful waterfall (which we did).
There is NO charge for Slieve League, and it made an amazing day. TAKE A PICNIC!! These are the highest cliffs in Europe, three times as high as the Moher Cliffs!
We were tired when we got back to the cottage, but slept so well in this pristine setting.
Ward and Mary are conscientous landlords, making certain that all is ready for your dream vacation. Their love for God, Ireland, and vacationers all work together to make this your dream vacation!

Donegal Thatched Cottages

  • 5 of 5
We stayed here from May 30 through June 3, 2012. It is difficult to chose a favorite place in Ireland because there are so many. Donegal Thatched Cottages tops the list, however. The setting is fantastic, the accomodations perfect and the owner helpful, gracious and interesting. It is a perfect place to explore County Donegal. The nearby town of Dungloe was a delightful surprise filled with music and friendly people.
Details are that the cottage was equipped with everything one could need, impeccably clean and provided an unmatched view of the Atlantic Ocean.
This was most probably our last trip to Ireland so it was good to save the best for last.

The cottage is located on Cruit Island, Kincasslagh, Co. Donegal. Cruit Island is joined by bridge to the mainland and is a perfect base from which to explore the many visitor attractions in Donegal. The island itself is a walkers paradise with a profusion of wild flowers and a hidden sandy cove around every corner. Visitors may wish to play the stunningly scenic Cruit Island golf links, absorb the culture of the local Gaeltacht areas, spend a day at Glenveagh National Park or learn about folk history at Glencolmcille folk village. Mostly you will be quite happy to simply sit out on the rocks around your cottage and drink in the sheer natural beauty.

Other Activities: Bird watching, rock climbing.

The combination of traditional half-door, old fashioned high ceiling, open hearth turf fire and sugan rocking chairs all combine to create an olde world, 'turn the clock back' cottage concept. Side by side with the traditional there are of course the full conveniences of modern living.
