Portesham is an ideal base for touring the area, as the seaside resort and ferry port of Weymouth, ferries to the
Channel Islands and France, the county town of Dorchester with its connections to Thomas Hardy, the Georgian town of Bridport, the Swannery and tropical gardens at Abbotsbury, the Jurassic Coast, a National Heritage site and Chesil Beach are all within easy reach.
The area is popular with walkers as Portesham has many walks some which link to the South Western coastal footpath.
Day trips are possible further afield to Winchester,London , Portsmouth,Bath and Bristol by road or train from Dorchester..
It is possible to take a ferry to Jersey or Guernsey and St Malo in France by Condor ferries from Weymouth.
The Abbotsbury Swannery dates back to medieval times when it housed a monastery the ruins of which can still be seen.
