Further details for this vacation apartment rental in Villefranche-sur-Mer, France

For Unwinding : Explore the cobbled meandering alleys, which open onto the colourful port, noted for its variety of waterside restaurants, artists and promenading friends. Enjoy a beach barbecue, watching the sun descend in an amber glow over Fort du Mont Alban. Or how about fresh fish from the fish monger on the harbour just five minutes away. The Citadel, built by the Dukes of Savoy houses a number of museums and art galleries together with an open air theatre / cinema. Jardin I’Octroi is the location for antique markets (Sundays AM) and the regular weekly food market (Saturdays AM). Just 10 mins. by bus and you can enjoy the street atmosphere of Nice with its boutiques, museums, and Promenade. Take a 'day trip' or a 'night at the opera' in the principality of Monaco, 20 mins. to the east. The apartment allows you to enjoy the best of what the south of France has to offer, a perfect combination of modern luxury and relaxation in the heart of a centuries old village on the Cote d’Azur.

For the Energetic: There is a wonderful selection of sea sports in the area including diving and sailing schools in Villefranche. There is fishing from the rocks or deep sea fishing, canoeing, water skiing, snorkelling, and sailing. There is a very popular Water World in the area of Antibe. For hill walkers there numerous routes along the coast line, in the hills around Eze and Menton and 'les villages perchez' like Aspermont, all accessible from the bus route to Menton or from Nice. For the more energetic there are higher walks in the Roya valley - Sospel & Tende, which makes a nice day trip as it is an hours train journey from Nice. There is good walking in the Var Valley of Haut Provence - St Martin en Vesubie, which is also one hour from Nice but you will need a car. North western Italy and Alpine ski resorts are also no more than 1.5 hours away. Details of these activities including bus and train time tables and walking maps are included in the welcome pack.

Garden Trips : The Maritime Alps create a unique microclimate east of Nice, protecting it in winter from the cold northern European winds and cooling it in summer - east of Beaulieu is known as Petit Afique. This climate of warm winters and pleasant summers creates a gardener’s paradise of exotic plants and shrubs. Consequently, there are many world-renowned gardens within walking distance of the apartment which are open to the public, such as Villa & Jardin Ephrussi de Rothschild on Cap Ferrat. This is a formal garden and villa in a fantastic setting on the ridge of Cap Ferrat, well worth a visit not forgetting a very pleasant coffee shop, bus 81 to Cap Ferrat. Then there is Villa & Jardin Kerylos in Beaulieu sur Mer, which is an accurate reproduction of a classic 5th centaury BC Greek villa reconstructing the life style of that time, also in a fantastic setting, waves lapping around its perimeter, bus 100 to Menton. There are other renowned gardens in the area of Menton, details in the apart.

Other Activities: Hill walking, snorkling, painting, museums and art galleries, and Institut de Francais

Gorgeous view, beautiful, comfortable apartment!

Bart & Diane Whitby, Ontario, Canada
Review Submitted: May 13, 2009 Date of Stay: April 2009
This was a beautiful, clean, apartment with a breathtaking view! It was well equipped and close to the bus, restaurants, shops, and attractions. The bed was large and comfy, and the bathroom had a great shower!
The walk down to the water was quite steep, but it was easier than walking back up! We got used to it by the end of the first week, and actually enjoyed the exercise.
We cooked several meals in the 2 weeks we were there and found the BBQ to be excellent. We took our laptop and were able to email the property manager if we had any questions. She or her assistant always got back to us in a timely way and they were extremely accommodating and helpful.
There were maps, transportation schedules and tips for sightseeing, as well as binoculars and several books for our use. We enjoyed having wine on the balcony while watching the cruise ships in the distance.
We took the train to Ventimiglia and Monte Carlo (fabulous!), and the bus to Nice (great shopping) and Beaulieu Sur Mer. There is a larger grocery store in Beaulieu Sur Mer just behind the Tourism office, but the petit Casino in the old village was great for the basics.
We loved The Hotel Welcome wine bar for drinks, Le Cosmo for dinner (try the tuna), La Piazza for lunch (the pizza was excellent), and the Internet Cafe (behind the Hotel Welcome) for an inexpensive mid afternoon beer or wine.
We found two restaurants in Beaulieu Sur Mer that we liked for lunch as well, Cafe de l'Agave and Chicoree.
The walk around Cap Ferrat took us about 3 hours to do but it was well worth it. The views were spectacular! (Wear good shoes!)
We met a lovely couple from California during our second week (they were our neighbors in the larger apartment next door). We had dinner with them a few times and they were kind enough to invite us to join them when they drove to Eze. The views from the patio of the Chateau de le Chevre d'Or were unbelievable, as were the prices in that restaurant! We did get some great pictures there!
This was a wonderful vacation for us, and a perfect way to celebrate our 30th anniversary!
A final tip: if you don't have a car, get the property manager to arrange a taxi for you to and from the airport in Nice. It is well worth the money and the convenience!
We would definitely return, and we will gladly recommend this apartment to others.

Summer 2009 La Belle Epoque

Bill & Lynn Oak Hill Virginia, USA
Review Submitted: August 1, 2009 Date of Stay: July 2009
We stayed at La Belle Époque for a week in July 2009. The apartment is everything it is advertized to be: elegant, convenient, clean, well-appointed and private. The pictures on this web site are very accurate and show the apartment exactly as we found it. There is a flight of stairs to negotiate but in hilly Villefranche, that's nothing. Bring your walking shoes and get ready to climb the beautiful hills. The view of the old town and harbor is stunning and is a beautiful way to start the morning. Susan was very helpful upon check- in and check-out and gave us great information on the apartment and things to do on the Rivera. Car parking is a challenge but is manageable - look further up the hill - there are always places. Many good restaurants and shops are close by. The grocery is just up the street. We highly recommend this property.

La Belle Epoque, des belle vacances

Charles & Rosemary Perth, WA, Australia
Review Submitted: December 31, 2008 Date of Stay: November 2008
We stayed for a month and it was delightful. We loved the apartment, the view, the comfort, the facilities, and the perfect condition in which we found everything. Villefranche-sur-Mer is one of the most beautiful places we have ever visited and this was our third stay in the town. It has a lovely, friendly ambience and is mostly unspoilt by modern development. In spite of arriving in mid-November we have had only four days with rain and plenty of days of sunshine, when we did lots of walking to Beaulieu and to Port St Jean and on the footpaths around Cap Ferrat, where the scenery is breathtaking. For going further around the coast, the train service is fine and the station is nearby. As we have been working as well as holidaying here, the broadband access has been invaluable. We have enjoyed the DVDs and books you have provided, and the barbeque on the balcony was a great bonus. The decor is charming and the wardrobe in the bedroom really useful. As owners of a holiday place in Australia, we can see that you have put a lot of thought into setting this up. Thankyou for your excellent apartment and thankyou to the manager who was very welcoming and very helpful.

Sea view--Charming location!

Primavera Washington, DC
Review Submitted: November 14, 2008 Date of Stay: September 2008
Fabulous view of sea in picturesque setting. Impeccably clean, convenient to beach, restaurants, train station. Great base for touring the Coast. Internet access. Terrific host provided tourist, travel, apartment orientation information; very gracious and accommodating. Though climbing steep pathway/stairs throughout Villefranche is part of its charm, must be able to do so to reach apartment.

A Great Stay

JonathanG New York, NY, USA
Review Submitted: October 22, 2008 Date of Stay: October 2008
The apartment definitely matched the descriptions and photos. The view from the terrace was truly incredible. The apartment was clean and comfortably appointed. The owner provided excellent customer service and I would recommend this rental to a friend.

Things to do: WALK! I walked to Eze (Mer) and Nice and Nice Cimiez. I didn't do the walk around Cap Ferrat, but I hear it's a good one. There are some hills and some tight spots along the road to Eze, but the rest is sidewalks and the most amazing views over the cliffs, across the harbors, out to sea, up the hillsides, into manicured gardens, etc... taking a hike off the main road in Cap d'Ail toward the sea took me through what have to be the most beautiful winding streets in the world.

If walking is too much, the bus is very efficient and only 1 Euro. The only drawback is that it stops running at 8 at night.

Villefranche is adorable and I was amazed that a place so old could be so well maintained and clean. The water was swimmable in early October (once you got in) and the beach was indeed relaxing. Great bread shops and the small grocery stores are convenient. There is an ATM steps from the apartment. There is a market on the weekends.

Overall, this was one of the best vacations I've ever taken.

Thank you, La Belle Epoque!
