Perfect end of summer getaway
We took our 2 (almost 3 yr old) son to Captain's rest for a week at the end of August. Being from the area, I knew that although it's not on the beach, it's close to the most beautiful beaches in Nova Scotia. One of which you can drive and park on, another is a spectacular provincial park with interpretive centre, campgrounds, salt marsh board walk trail, canteen and covered picnic tables, brand new showers and washrooms, and yet a third large beach (if you know where it is) that you will not likely have to share with anyone. Captain's rest is also a 30 second drive from the historic LaHave River cable ferry that leads to Unesco site Lunenburg and lovely Mahone Bay. There is a winery in the area as well. Bridgewater is the commercial centre where you can stock up for your stay. Bridgewater is a scenic drive along the LaHave River, approximately 12kms.
I must admit that when we arrived the front facade seemed a bit 'rustic' but once inside we had spacious, renovated accommodations and were not disappointed. We really had a lovely time - the weather was spectacular, and our host Gerhard was very gracious. He lives on an adjacent (but not visible) property so it was nice to know that if anything was needed (it wasn't), he was close by, but he was also respectful of our privacy at all times.
We hope to return!
