Photos and Description of the LaHave vacation house rental
Parlor, living room, 4 bedrooms and 2 bathrooms, garden with old trees

The house was built around 1890 and its various rooms for reading, listening to music or watching DVDs /TV have been renovated recently to their original gemuetlichkeit. Enjoy preparing your food with the produce bought at the close-by farmers market and your meal in the large eating area off the kitchen. Mainfloor and 1. floor have their own bathroom and altogether 4 bedrooms (2 double, 2 single). The house and garden in its rural setting is the perfect basis for exploring the area. Within 25 km there is Bridgewater (the 'hub of the south shore') with its restaurants, shopping malls and museums, the world heritage town of Lunenburg with its harbour, art galleries and fishery musem, and several beautiful sand beaches and rocky coves along the coastline. Whether you like sun bathing, sea cayaking, bird or whale watching, you don't have to go far. And in the evening, while the kids are in bed upstairs you can have your last glas of wine with cards, music or making plans for the next day.

Captain's Rest - A Vacation Treasure

Captain's Rest - A Vacation Treasure

We truly loved staying at the Captain's Rest! We were soaking in every bit of it. We loved the home, the yard, the reading rooms, and we especially enjoyed our gracious host, Gerhard who made sure that our every need was met and more!

It had been several years since we took our family to vacation in Nova Scotia. This time, my husband and I were escorting my brother and his wife on their first trip to the Atlantic Provinces. We wanted a very special place and we found it in Captain's Rest.

Our host was very accommodating in every regard, making a point to let us know that this was our special time and he wanted to make sure that we had a pleasant and leisurely stay.

The house is very spacious, yet charming at the same time. There was always a place to read or chat or play games. The backyard was private and peaceful, looking over the LaHave River. Crisp mornings listening to the birds and beautiful sunsets over the LaHave River were just a step outside our door!

Many mornings were spent walking to the LaHave Bakery or simply strolling along stopping in at different local artists' homes where they were selling their works.

We spent our afternoons at nearby Risser's beach or travelling to Lunenberg or Halifax, Peggy's Cove, Mahone Bay - so many places to see, so many things to do!

A perfect place to call home when you are away!

Perfect end of summer getaway

We took our 2 (almost 3 yr old) son to Captain's rest for a week at the end of August. Being from the area, I knew that although it's not on the beach, it's close to the most beautiful beaches in Nova Scotia. One of which you can drive and park on, another is a spectacular provincial park with interpretive centre, campgrounds, salt marsh board walk trail, canteen and covered picnic tables, brand new showers and washrooms, and yet a third large beach (if you know where it is) that you will not likely have to share with anyone. Captain's rest is also a 30 second drive from the historic LaHave River cable ferry that leads to Unesco site Lunenburg and lovely Mahone Bay. There is a winery in the area as well. Bridgewater is the commercial centre where you can stock up for your stay. Bridgewater is a scenic drive along the LaHave River, approximately 12kms.

I must admit that when we arrived the front facade seemed a bit 'rustic' but once inside we had spacious, renovated accommodations and were not disappointed. We really had a lovely time - the weather was spectacular, and our host Gerhard was very gracious. He lives on an adjacent (but not visible) property so it was nice to know that if anything was needed (it wasn't), he was close by, but he was also respectful of our privacy at all times.

We hope to return!

Vacation at LaHave

Our vacation at LaHave included celebration of of daughter's wedding ,so this home was a perfect base for most of the family to prepare for the event. Lots of room, a good kitchen, and a big back yard for the children to play. It is a short walk to the bakery and to the historic fort and beach. Great weather and the landlord was very helpful to have things organized for us when we arrived. Perfect for a family vacation, being close to great beaches.

Serenity

We stayed at Captain's Rest this past July. We found the house to be typical Nova Scotia architecture, and quaint, spacious, and welcoming. The back yard was especially pleasant mornings to have coffee and evenings for cocktails. Sleeping at night was a treat, quiet as well as soothing from the breezes from the nearby Lehave river.
We found the location convenient for trips to Lunenburg, Bridgetown, and points south-especially the many beaches that are all relatively close by.
Many mornings were spent walking over to the Lehave bakery for coffee and muffins, and to meet the locals.
The owner of Captain's Rest, Gerhard, was friendly and attentive, and ready at the drop of a hat to make our stay more comfortable.
