CHARMING TUSCAN FARMHOUSE/VILLA WITH POOL IN IDYLLIC SETTING NEAR LUCCA

San Martino in Freddana Farmhouse Rental Photos and Description

Beautifully restored Podere Consani enjoys stunning panoramic views. Sleeps 6

Beautifully restored Podere Consani lies in an idyllic setting amongst well-tended natural gardens,(lavender, roses, lemons and herbs) that lead into the adjacent olive groves, vineyard & woodland, in the hills between Lucca and the coast. The house shares a swimming pool with the one other cottage and the English-speaking owners who live in the main house. The owners take great care to ensure guests are happy during their stay whilst respecting their privacy. They produce their own wine and olive oil. Nature-lovers,painters and walkers alike cannot fail to enjoy the wonderful surroundings and lovely views and although Podere Consani is set in this oasis of peace, it is however only 15 minutes before the majestic walls of Lucca come into sight.

Within a few minutes walk is the Podere Consani stud where it is possible for children to ride the lovely pony 'Chocolate'. Recently restored, the house has all modern conveniences whilst maintaining its original Tuscan style and charm.

The description of the location is absolutely accurate. The property is absolutely clean and well-maintained. Still very natural.
When first coming to the location it is overwhelmingly beautiful because of nature, garden and houses. We had the Casa di Cherubino for 2 weeks. The house seems to be big with three bedrooms and even more beds, but it is unusual and very cozy. Everything worked well(f.e.kitchen, well equipped, bathrooms beautiful in italian style, tv, telephone). An old farmhouse, charming and with that special style one looks for when renting a farmhouse in Italy, but still verything you are accustomed to is there. Sitting in the evening or night on the terrace with candles burning on the table, the location has the atmosphere of being at ease with everything and everybody. Pure leisure.
The owners "service" is not really like owners service, distant and anonymous, it is like being part of the family without having "the family"at your table: there is always someone somewhere, but quite invisible, unobtrusive, decent, caring, friendly (when giving you fresh tomatoes from the owners garden), but if you need help, it is there.
Wonderful people around there!Beautiful location!
The pool is clean, pretty and big enough for everybody staying there.
Of course we will go back as often as we can, when we need a time-out with reading, walking, wondering, how beautiful a place can be, enjoying.
Lucca is by car 15 minutes away. And Lucca is terrific.Sightseeing is a duty:-)))
We are happy to have found this location.

Owner's Response: Thank you for your lovely remarks. Its wonderful to know that a place one loves so much gives other people so much pleasure. I have lived at Podere Consani for 30 years and I still open my shutters in the morning and think how lucky I am to live in this beautiful place - its position, views and its vicinity to Lucca, the sea and the mountains, without forgetting Florence, Siena and Pisa. As owners who live on the property we try to be descrete as possible but we are always available to help with any special requests, give any local information, share our wine, olive oil and home-grown vegetables - infact share our little corner of paradise!

A beautiful house in idyllic setting

Be assured the house and facilities are as good as the description. The owners and family are warm and welcoming and full of useful information and ideas without being intrusive. The property was beautifully clean and perfectly located for seeing all the major attractions and cities in the area, but also relaxing and peaceful for just staying poolside. Would recommend without hesitation and hope to return again and again.
Owner's Response: Thank you so much for that lovely review - and written so quickly after your return home! We so enjoyed having you here and thank you again for all your help with the grape picking for the vendemmia. Come back soon to taste the result of your hard work! Sue

Our perfect Tuscan holiday

  • 5 of 5
  • Submitted: Feb 15, 2013

My husband and I and our two children (8 &10) stayed at Podere Consani during June 2012. As Australians who had always dreamed of a Tuscan holiday, we were thoroughly gratified with our experience as guests on this quiet picturesque estate.

In short our expectations were exceeded.

On our arrival at Podere Consani we could not believe how quintessentially Tuscan the property actually was. The roses surrounding the very inviting pool were in full bloom, the lavender swaying in the breeze with the gorgeous restored stone farmhouse a stunning backdrop, the grapevine covering the pergola walkway providing a shady pathway to see the expansive view of Lucca in the valley below.
Our hosts Susan and Lelio were marvellous and worked hard to make sure we were welcome and were familiarised with everything about our accommodation and how to get around the surrounding area to obtain anything we needed. We were free to wander the property and inspect the vineyard, the large vegetable garden and watch the equestrian centre also run on the property in action. There were dogs and cats for the kids to play with and goats to feed. Apart from spending some gloriously tranquil time reading under the mulberry tree while my children were endlessly entertained in the pool, I think one of my favourite things was standing bare foot in the olive grove hanging my washing on lines between the trees!
The accommodation in the Casa di Cherubino itself was excellent. All the items you would need were catered for and more. We needed to stay in touch with our business whilst we travelled and were able to communicate easily and research day trips etc on the web without any problem. The bathrooms were lovely and worked beautifully. The bedrooms were comfortable and offered postcard views from every window.
Susan helped us to travel easily and enjoyably to Lucca and Florence, Pisa and the Cinque Terre and to the seaside. On our final evening she outdid herself by suggesting a restaurant up in the hills where we were treated to many mouth watering courses whilst enjoying the sun set over the stunning Tuscan landscape.

We simply didn’t want to leave and we have every intention of returning if we are able to.
Owner's Response: Thank you Natalie for such a lovely review - I'm so glad your stay at Podere Consani made your visit to Tuscany so perfect and that it actually surpassed your expectations! It is difficult to describe one's property in such a way as to encourage people to come and stay without exagerating so that guests are disappointed when they arrive.

I'm also glad I was able to help you by giving some advice as to things to see and do. Having come here when I was 22 and fallen in love with this beautiful country, its fun to give some information, if requested, to others, if it helps them have as positive an experience as I have had - some special memories to take away with them!

Ciao e grazie,

Susan

Paradise at Podere Consani in Lucca

My family stayed at Podere Consani in October 2012 for five magical days. There were six of us in total and we had the larger of the two villas on the property. My sister and her husband had never been to Italy before, so, I wanted to find a place that was special, and it was! We arrived late and couldn’t see the surroundings outside but the villa itself was wonderful. It had three large bedrooms, each with their own renovated bathrooms decorated in lovely Italianate style. The beds were very comfortable and there were beautiful hand-painted armoires and dressers in all of the rooms. The sitting room was large enough for all six of us to sit around in the evening and play games and chat. The kitchen was also large and perfectly equipped for home cooked meals that we made every night and sat reminiscing about what we had seen during the day in the separate dining room. All the little details of the place made you feel like you were home. On waking that first day and peering out through the arched window, I was so excited. It was like walking into a dream. Roses cascading over wooden fences, the sparkling blue pool, the grapevine arbor leading to vistas of the Lucca hills, the olive trees filled with precious black and green gems, the horse stables busy with activity, the lush green pastures. It was just perfect and I really didn’t want to leave to go sightseeing. The pool was closed for the season but the boys ran around outside exploring every aspect of the property coming back with excited cries of “mom, come see this” or “look what we found”. Our friendly hostess, Susan, was amazing. She was always there when you needed something and gave wonderful advice on what things to see and do. From Podere Consani, we did easy day trips to Lucca, Florence, Portovenere and the Cinque Terre. A highlight of our stay was helping to harvest olives. It was the start of the harvest season and nets were being spread out around the trees. We were warmly welcomed to help out and shown how to pick the olives without bruising them. This was a favorite activity after sightseeing all day or in the mornings before heading out. Susan even took us to where her olives were pressed run by the same family for generations. We met the entire family and were given a private tour. At the end, Susan produced an empty bottle and they filled it with the emerald green first press oil for us to take as a gift. Podere Consani was heaven and we want to go back!
Owner's Response: Thank you so much for such a lovely description of your time at Podere Consani. As I have said before, it is really special receiving a complimentary account of people's stay here. I have lived in Italy for 43 years and at Podere Consani for 35 of those. For me it is still as magical as when we first moved up here - the views of the hills and in the distance the valley with Lucca just out of sight.
Every season has its special moments as those that have stayed here will know. The spring flowers in the olive groves - the many bird songs, the summer heat with the fire-flies, lavender, roses and bees and the autumn with Lucca's special candlelight procession, the grape picking in our vineyard, the autumn colours and the olive picking.
I will always remember how fortunate I felt when I arrived here to have stumbled upon such a beautiful city as Lucca. Walking to work through the old streets of the town was a real joy and as Lucca is so strategically placed it enabled me to easily explore many historical towns such as Pisa, Florence, Siena, S.Gimignano, Volterra and then the coast and the famous Cinque Terre and best of all the hills to the north with the many towns and villages hidden away.
This is why I'm always so pleased when people tell me how much they have enjoyed staying here - they have managed to capture some of the Tuscan magic and taste some of its flavours.

Thank you for coming and please keep in touch!

Pretty much the perfect holiday

We had a wonderful time at Podere Consani. The location is absolutely stunning, particularly at the height of spring. We stayed in the larger of the two villas, which had plenty of space for our family of four. We would eat outside in the sunshine in the evening we would relax by the fire.

My two daughters enjoyed exploring the farm and we were all made to feel very welcome by Susan and her husband.

I would thoroughly recommend a holiday here.

Owner's Response: Thank you all for writing such a lovely review. Podere Consani is obviously a very special place for us, but it is great to get such positive feedback from guests and to know that they have so enjoyed their time here that they want to return. For children the highlight is always the chance to go down to the stables to ride or feed carots to the ponies and grass and old bread to the 3 goats who wait eagerly each day for a visit!
Come back soon.

Podere Consani is situated on a plateau in the lovely hills between the magnificent old town of Lucca and the coast. It has wonderful views overlooking the surrounding countryside - to the south-east towards Lucca and the more distant plain to Florence -to the north the stunning marble mountains and the Garfagnana with its picturesque hill-top towns & to the west the sea.The nearest beaches are at Viareggio (30min) and further up the coast are the beautiful sea-side towns of Lerici and Portovenere and the fishing villages of the Cinque Terra. In fact it lies in a very strategic position - only 20min from beautiful historic Lucca, surrounded by the magnificent walls on which one can walk or bike, 45min from Pisa airport and other historical cities such as Florence, Siena and S.Gimigniano are within easy reach. S.Martino (4km) has restaurants, a supermarket, banks, chemist etc..There is lots to see and do - that is if you can bear to tear yourself away from the beauty of Podere Consani.
