TRULY MEMORABLE HOLIDAY

  • 5 of 5
We (couple with 4 year old daughter) arrived after a flight to Bergen and then coach to Oppedal where the cabin owner (Eldar) collected us by car before taking us to the cabin. This is a good option as hiring a car looked expensive and would have been used very little as we intended to relax, have fun and just walk in the local area. Norweigan public transport is very good and reasonably priced so proved a wise move.

Booked on seeing pictures of the cabins and reading previous reviews. We had wanted to visit Scandanavia for a while and Norway seemed a good choice as we hoped a February visit would provide snow for how we imagined it 'should' be! We were not disapointed as we had snow throughout our 5 night stay yet the temperature was mild for the time of year at around 0C. We had been expecting it to be far colder so were certainly not cold with the clothes we had brought with us!

We stayed in the large log cabin which was very spacious, warm and beautiful. Underfloor heating in all but the two bedrooms was great and the log fire really made the evenings special. Everything we needed was in the kitchen and bathroom and the friendly owners even lent us a laptop and hairdryer for our stay.

The view over Sognefjord is magnificient, some days complimented by a blue sky others were striking with snow clouds rolling in. We wandered the nearby area as best we could with a 4 year old! Up a trail into the forest and another to a frozen lake all so tranquil and peaceful. We were lent sledges by the owners for our daughter (well we did have a go too...) which she adored.

Walked to the local shop (run by the mother of Eldar who was helpful and friendly) and bought some provisions which were delivered later on in the day to our cabin. The selection was very good, especially considering how small a population lives in Ortnevik.

Returned by ferry to Nordeide before taking an express boat to Bergen. Then went by train to Oslo which we highly recommend especially the initial part of the journey as it is very spectacular.

Really could not fault anything, even the weather played to plan. The whole stay was truly memorable and we are so glad we visited the special Ortnevik.

ORTNEVIK DREAM

  • 5 of 5
I was recently in Ortnevik staying at your cabins with 17 other people and I just wanted to say what a fantastic time we had. It was the most wonderful place with such lovely, friendly people. We really enjoyed the peaceful stay as well as climbing the mountains and jumping in the fjord!

The Cabins were clean and comfortable. The firewood and heating were perfect and easy to use. Even without a car, travelling around was simple, although the walk back up to the cabins could get a bit tiring after climbing a mountain! The local shop was well stocked and the locals were incredibly helpful and kind. Catching the ferry was fine and the information provided very useful. It would have been better to have a little bit more information regarding the walking trails and the extent of the experience required to climb the larger mountain, especially considering some of the trail is no longer there. Still, we had a wonderful time and I would not hesitate to go back!

Ortnevik was a peaceful, charming oasis and I wouldnt hesitate to recommend Brekke cabins to anyone else. Thank you so much for an amazing holiday. They will be memories to last a lifetime and beyond :)

Owner's Response: Thank you for writing a review. We have had a great time having you all in our small village, the idea that you might come back or make a regular thing of this is very exciting for us.

Most of all we like that you love it here, we think this is the most beautiful place, and that you liked it is what we are aiming for. So thank you for that.

In response to your suggestion about the walking trails and more information.

FOLD IN EACH CABIN
There is a white A4 folder in each cabin with detailed maps and walking trail information. If it wasn't there or easy to find, sorry. The is an extremely high resolution map of the immediate area (10km a radius around the village) and National park for the more adventurous. This map was commissioned 2 years ago so is up to date as well as detailed for this area. However with your suggestion to provide more information than in the cabins, we will upgrade the website; our own website (brekke dot net) to include the walking information and maps so people can check it out & plan before they come.

For those who are interested in a gentle stroll, the walking trails around the village are listed in each cabin folder and on the notice boards around the village.

MOUNTAIN HIKING IN NORWAY
When people ask us for timings and things, we do try to explain the terrain and altitude, but walking up 1000m in Norway normally means quite a challenge compared to walks in other countries. Generally the high mountain trails are deer trails and paths "not often walked" before July, our hiking season starts 01 July, because of the high altitude snow, so in April when you were here the trails are not fresh after the winter, a good map and map skills are essential. The village shop has a hikers GPS and high resolution maps with all the local paths marked in. The GPS is cheap to hire for the day and extra maps are in each cabin.

Eldar did mention to Todd that the walk up to 1000m would take 4-5 hours to get up, plus the extra time to get back down, but this does depend on individual capabilities. That said you all did a fantastic job of making up 1000m, the village was dutifully impressed (I have yet to make it up there) that so many of you made it to the cabin at the top of the Fitje Mountain, especially if you were without a map, really it is impressive by anyones standards.

SLICE OF BLISS TUCKED AWAY IN NORWAY

  • 5 of 5
The only words to describe this place are just pure bliss.

The perfect holiday for anyone whether your looking for a family vacation, casual trip with friends or a dirty weekend locked away in the fjords. The cabin was immaculate inside and out, a work of art in itself. We had a party of 5 and spent the night in hanging out taking in the fresh air, admiring the fantastic views and generally utilising the fantastic facilities the cabin has to offer. The kitchen was well equiped and more than efficent. The fire place was just the icing on the cake.

Our favourite part of this cabin was the sensational outdoor fire heated hot tub which we spent sipping away on tipple under the stars.

All and all this place is not to be missed.

EVERYTHING WE HOPED FOR AND MORE - WE'LL BE BACK!

Everything we hoped for and more - we'll be back!
  • 5 of 5
Norway had always been on our 'list of places we want to visit' and after getting married in November 2010, relaxing at home for Christmas and New Year we decided that we would look for somewhere to stay in Norway for 2 weeks in April. Purely by chance we found the brekke.net website and it was obvious that 'The Big Cabin' was exactly what we were looking for.
Approximately a 3-4 hour drive from Bergen airport, with several opportunities to stock up on groceries and tasty treats on the way, the drive was very straight-forward (basically just follow the road) and gave us our first taste of the spectacular Norwegian landscape. As we arrived in April the Mountain Pass was still closed but we hope to return in the warmer months so we can get the full experience. When we arrived at the cabin we were even more impressed with it than we had expected (the photos are very good but when you are there the cabin and surroundings take your breath away). Although the big cabin can accommodate 12 people comfortably my husband and I did not feel it was too big for us (although there was one bedroom that we didn't go in to). The kitchen had every facility we needed and a few that we didn't get round to using, the dishwasher was a big bonus and the washing machine in the shower-room was really handy. In addition, the under-floor heating was perfect and getting out of bed, or coming in after a short stroll to the lake and walking barefoot on warm tiles was an unexpected joy.
We were hoping for a place to relax, unwind, enjoy stunning scenery and basically take life at whatever pace we felt suited our mood - the Big Cabin, the hospitality and generosity of the Brekke family and the worlds best view from our large living room window gave us all that...and more! An apparently limitless supply of logs for the open fire ensured every evening was especially relaxing.
Our time in the big cabin was our introduction to Norway and we will definitely be back - in the summer to swim in the fjords, in the more snowy months and again in spring to watch the huge spring-melt waterfalls...basically, it's clear that this is a great spot for a break whatever time you can make it.
The information pack supplied with the cabin was incredibly valuable for planning activities such as short (and longer) walks around the cabin, excursions to the Glacier Museum etc. and ferry times to neighbouring towns.
So, if the Big Cabin is available - BOOK IT! :o)

AMAZING HOLIDAY IN NORWAY

  • 5 of 5
My wife and two close friend try and get away a couple of times a year on short breaks. The idea of the short breaks is to get away from work and the phones for a bit of relaxation.
What can we say!!!!!! the cabins, Hedia and Eldar, the location and the country and out experiences were wonderful. Our main disappointment is that we havent managed to find time to go back yet!
Sitting in the hot tub with a bottle of champagne at 11pm in near daylight was very special, and we have a pictre on our study wall to remind us of how special it was. The cabins were spotless, and excaclty as described. It takes a bit of getting use to that you have to make sure you have all the essentials with you, even down to salt, pepper, toilet paper etc as you cannot just pop out and pick up things, but that in my views adds the the experience. Norway is a fascinating place, with a very laid back attitude. We found driving around no problem, except for one close shave wheby we had a hectic 30 minute drive to make a ferry returning for a day out. The roads are not too bad in most places, but journeys will take you longer than you are used to.There is so much fantastic scenery you must leave more time than you expect for stopping to take photos.
Heidi was always available and willing to answer our questions no matter how trivial, and both Heidi and Eldar helped with planning some of our trips, exssential, as it is difficlut to work out how long some parts of journey will take. The ferries were quite expensive but ran efficiently and on time. Walks are excellent with well marked routes both easy and difficlut
Supeb location, lovely people, super accomadation, definaltly reccomend, and yes it really is as good as the pictures on the website.
