Photos and Description of the Montecastelli vacation farmhouse rental
Tuscan farmhouse, in a very romantic valley, 1 hour from Siena, Florence, Pisa

Le Pietraie is a stone-walled farmhouse first built in 1600's, surrounded by a wonderful garden full of many typical and rare plants and shrubs, lovely at all times of year. The house nestles in the beautiful Peacock Valley (Val di Pavone), encircled by fine woodlands, hills and meadows, and is like a terrace on the valley. The valley is home to a wide variety of animals, birds, butterflies and rare wild plants: snowdrops, hellebore, anemone, narcissus, cyclamen, wild orchids, primrose, brooms, wild cherry trees and arbutus unedo to name just a few. The Pietraia lies 300 m from the Peacock River (Pavone) where it is possible to bath, to swim, to make long walks in a wonderful canyon until you reach the confluence with the Cecina River. On our website you can see more photos of the garden, the Valley, the hills around Le Pietraie. The owners live on the first floor. They speak English,German, French and Italian. In case of health problems an English speaking family doctor is nearby.

Guest book: 2004: We had wonderful days cycling the many hills. active on the slow ascents. This is a very special place. B. Beerle , Anchorage, Alaska *** July 2006: We had an absolute great time staying at your place. You achieved a perfect combination of comfort and fine style, a superb mix of old and new at your property. We certainly like to return to Pietraia one day again. N. Bendin, Ottawa, Canada. *** August 2006 We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at your wonderful place. Set in a beautiful area, within driving distance of some fabulous sites; we could not have asked more. At times, it felt as though we were a million miles from anything/everything; and that is the way we we wanted it! It was totally relaxing! The Smith family, Louisiana, USA

Cities of art – thermal baths: According to the UNESCO, 60% of World's Heritage is concentrated in Italy, half of which is to be found in Florence alone! Florence is one hour from Montecastelli, Pisa 80 minutes, Volterra 40 minutes, Siena 40 minutes, San Gimignano 40 minutes, Colle Val d'Elsa 25 minutes, Lucca 1 hour 45 minutes, Castelnuovo Val di Cecina 15 minutes, Montecastelli 5 minutes, not forgetting the little discovered gem of Massa Marittima,45 minutes. But remember: the lesser known Medieval and Etruscan towns of Tuscany hold its real charm and beauty. Hundreds of churches, museums, art galleries, buildings, as well as street markets, shops and restaurants, hidden in narrow streets of little villages, are waiting for you to discover and explore them. Very old and beautiful thermal baths were you can relax yourself are 40 to 90 minutes far: Bagno Vignoni, Petriolo, Casciana Terme, Venturina.

Tuscan wines, Tuscan olive oil, chestnuts: Around Montecastelli it is possible to find high quality wines at really reasonable prices, in Castelnuovo VC (15 minutes) there is a good Enoteca. Montalcino with its Brunello and Rosso is not far. It is possible to buy good olive oil in many villages. In Castelnuovo Val di Cecina there is in October a chestnut fair. In San Gimignano there is in November a Festival for finest olive oils (olio extra vergine). In Volterra you can find the local white truffles. During the early spring you can find wild asparagus along the paths. Three good local restaurants at very reasonable prices are 5 minutes from Le Pietraie, many others are in the nearby villages.

The house belongs to the medieval town of Montecastelli Pisano, and is situated in the Pavone valley, not more than one hour's drive from Florence, Siena, Pisa, Volterra, San Gimignano, the Tyrrenian Sea.

Two very clean Rivers give opportunities to swim. In spring the hills are getting more and more green every day, with the white blossom of the big wild cherry trees, you can walk among wild primrose, or wild cyclamens, or anemones. There is a field full of yellow narcissus. Every part of the valley has its own flowers. In summer to walk along the River Pavone is something very very special. You can swim and stay all day there, making a barbecue near the water at night and singing around the fire, waiting for the rising moon. In June you can walk under the bright stars, surrounded by millions of fire-flies. In autumn the oak forests turn to orange brown and will keep their leaves until December. In 1-2 hours you can be in the best Golf clubs of Tuscany.

Golf: You can reach several Golf Tuscan Clubs in 1/2-2 hours. They are near the principle Art cities of Tuscany, and the time you need to reach them is among the beautiful tuscan hills.

In Tuscany, thanks to a warm climate, and surrounded by the beautiful landscapes, it's possible to play all the year long. By the way, the best period to play golf in Tuscany, is in spring and autumn when the temperature not so high as in summer, let you play during the central hours of the day.The Golf Clubs around us are near FIRENZE:Golf Club Bellosguardo Vinci (Vinci); Golf Club Centanni, Bagno a Ripoli; Circolo dell’Ugolino, Impruneta; Golf & Country Club Poggio dei Medici, Scarperia; Castelfalfi Golf & Country Club, Castelfalfi; Contry Club Le Pavoniere, Prato; near SIENA:Circolo Golf L’Abbadia, Colle Val d’Elsa. Wundervoll

Charming, Restful Apartment with Beautiful views

5 of 5
Submitted: March 4, 2012 Stayed: October 2011
We spent 3 nights at Pergola but would have liked to stay much longer. The farmhouse sits on a hillside and the views on 3 sides are beautiful. Sitting on the patio for early morning coffee and at sundown was a wonderful experience. The apartment has everything needed for any length of stay. The kitchen is fully equipped and the bathroom is exquisite. The apartment was spacious, comfortable and had a great deal of old world charm. The gardens surrounding the farmhouse, with grape vines, olive and pomegranate trees, roses etc., add beauty and interest to the building. Our hostess, friendly and welcoming, left a beautiful bouquet of pink dahlias as she knew we were celebrating our anniversary. The nearby villages of San Dalmazio and Montecastelli Pisano are well worth a visit. All in all, our stay here was thoroughly enjoyable.

Lovely place to spend a week

5 of 5
Submitted: July 23, 2009 Stayed: June 2009
We had a great week staying at Le Pietraie.
The apartment (Pergola) was really nice, and was a decent size. A highlight was being able to relax on the shady patio enjoying the scenery and the peace and quiet.
Our hosts were helpful and even provided us with flowers and vegetables from the garden.
We managed to visit some of the well known tourist sights - Siena, San Gimignano, Elba. We particularly enjoyed visiting a number of lovely little hill top villages in the area and swimming in the nearby river.
We frequented the 2 restaurants in nearby San Dalmazio on several occasions.
We would be more than happy to return some day.
Thank you for a lovely holiday.

Tuscany off the beaten tracks

5 of 5
Submitted: September 22, 2008 Stayed: August 2008
Far away from tourist packed areas, and busy roads, Le Pietraie was a real haven of peace and beauty. Our hosts were wonderful people, warm, generous and very helpful with tips on how to make the most of our time in Tuscany. We were able to see all the main sites of Tuscany, but also to do more: to experience the unspoiled beauty of the area, to explore villages that were not mentioned in the main tourists guides and yet deserved to be seen to get a real feel of the region.

Once of the best vacation-spots ever!

5 of 5
Submitted: May 12, 2008 Stayed: September 2007
My wife and I spent 10 wonderful days at the Pergola in late September of 2006. As we drove up the hill to reach Le Pietraie we were overcome by its rural beauty. We were warmly greeted by our hosts and on when we returned to our temporary home after a day filled with glorious experiences we were frequently met with a freshly-filled bowl of fruits and vegetables setting on the patio table.

Each morning we woke to the gentle sounds of bells off in the distance. Apparently, a neighboring farmer herds a small flock of sheep with tiny bells around their collars each morning and afternoon.

We were within short drives of many superb locations and on those mornings when we left before the early fog burned off, we were dazzled by the "fairy tale castle islands" floating in the mist.

The combination of local villages, small medieval towns and the relative ease of reaching the metro areas made this an ideal location.

Outstanding!
