Calheta Cottage Rental Photos and Description

2 Bedrooms, 2 bathrooms, sleeps 4, pool, wireless broadband

Casa da Pedra is a traditional Madeiran house in the village of Arco da Calheta.

The locals reckon that Arco da Calheta has the best micro-climate of all! Ans it’s a quiet location . The house has two bedrooms, one with an en-suite bathroom. Downstairs is one big room which provides lounge, dining and kitchen areas. The walls are very thick stone – they are over 150 years old, part of the original cottage. This keeps the house cool in the summer, and warm in the winter.

Outside there is a swimming pool and south facing terrace. The pool is about 5 metres by 8 metres; the depth is about 1.5 metres, solar heated

There are two bedrooms upstairs. Both open on to the balcony, which faces south, giving stunning views over the sea and surrounding mountains. The first bedroom has an en-suite shower room, and there is also a family bathroom.

The shops are a short walk away but in case you arrive late in the day, ask about a welcome pack

There is a garden below the swimming pool, with a wooden house (Casa da Madeira). If the owners are staying there they may use the pool (don't worry, we are quite nice really!). You are welcome to pick fruit from the trees in the garden - these include , custard apples, passion fruit, and some young citrus trees.

Pool refurbishment: The pool was refurbished in December 2008, so you will have an even better swimming experience!

Previous guests may be pleased to learn that the parking area has been altered to make parking much easier. In addition in December 2012 an electric hob was installed to replace the gas one. For users of the high tech shower who may have experienced a cheeky coolness to the water, happy news. The gas boiler which supplied hot (well almost) has been replaced with a solar water system. This is supported by an electric immersion heater. So, cold showers by choice only now!

Guestbook comments from the owner

We wish to express our thanks for your contribution to a wonderful holiday we had on the island of Madeira. The house in Arco da Calheta was just perfect. It was very clean and tidy and had everything we needed for a self catering stay. It was an ideal location to base ourselves for exploring the island and the swimming pool was a real bonus. I would also like to thank Ezequiel and his staff for organising the taxi pickup from the port and the car hire. We will have no hesitation recommending your house to anyone wishing to visit Madeira in the future.

VERY COMFORTABLE ACCOMMODATION WITH EXCELLENT POOL

  • 5 of 5
We visited Madeira for the first time in Sept 2014, and as we like a quiet place to stay this was just right for us. The road to the house was a bit challenging, but having hired a smallish car, we got quite used to it.

The accommodation throughout was very comfortable, although the downstairs area was a bit unusual and the free Wi-Fi was a bonus, as was access to British TV.

The swimming pool was the warmest we've had, and the view over the Atlantic was pretty good.

As we encountered some rain some mornings, the downstairs terrace was just perfect to allow us to have our breakfast etc in comfort and the dry, with the upstairs balcony perfect for the sunshine over the rest of the day.

A perfect spot - just not enough sun for us!

  • 4 of 5
I had high expectations of Casa Pedra having seen its descriptions and photos and spoken to its very helpful owner, Carole. I wasn't disappointed! It is a 'proper' cottage not a holiday complex one and that's what we wanted to experience real Madeiran life. The local agent provided us with the keys and information about the village, shops etc. - not too far to go, particularly if you use "Heart-attack hill". We'd hired a car at the airport (but you can do it via the agent here) and travelled round the beautiful island. The roads to the cottage and others on the island are narrow, steep and require due care so a small car is preferable! Casa Pedra has everything as stated, well fitted-out, with a superb pool. Sadly, the weather was a bit mixed and not quite good enough for a dip! We used the supermarket in Calheta, just at the bottom of the hill, and also ate in the Calheta Beach hotel on two evenings. Having had a holiday there a few years ago, we knew the evening meal buffet to be excellent and very good value. Any negatives? We'd hoped for better weather in late March/early April but were just unlucky. It was similar or possibly worse than December weather of previous holidays. The cottage itself would have been a pleasant, shady, cool environment in the summer heat but for us it was a little on the gloomy and cool side. We would happily revisit slightly later in the season.

Owner's Response: sorry about the weather, we can't control it. However we will try to do something about the lighting to make it less 'gloomy' on wet miserable days. Fortunately there are not many of them. Hope to welcome you again

Great views and superb pool

  • 5 of 5
Everything was as good as described, but the swimming pool was even better- huge, clear as crystal, and extremely well maintained. The house is very well equipped, the views of the sea and countryside were stunning, and it's position was excellent for exploring all areas of the island.
In Madeira, food, drinks, and eating out were all reasonably priced.
A word of caution--hire the smallest car that you can. We hired a Citroen C1. The one main road on the island is easy but many of the side roads are very, very, narrow and tortuous.

Arco de Calheta - best location for families

  • 5 of 5
Stayed at this lovely character property in August 2011 with family (2 children 9 and 5). A few myths to dispel - Madeira is not full of old people and it's not expensive - it's not commercial either once you've left Funchal.

This property worked very well for us - it has loads of character and space yet it has the mod cons such as a dishwasher and wi-fi. The pictures and the description are very accurate. The agent who met us was very friendly and took his time to show us everything we needed to know. The view over the village and out to sea is amazing and you get a lovely sunset too.

I would say Arco is the perfect place to get a taste of Madeira. It's an hour from the airport, 35 minutes from Funchal and about 10 minutes down to the 'artificial' beach. Arco itself is a village that is unspoilt. It's very quiet and the property is well away from any main roads. There are probably about 10 shops and 6-8 bars in and around Arco but they are spread out and best discovered via a leisurely walk or two. You can also walk up to one of the Levadas and a day trip by car to Porto Moniz is about an hour away. There is a small supermarket about 3 minutes walk away but better to go to the one by the artificial beach, which is bigger and cheaper.

A few general tips about Madeira we found: cheap flights by Easyjet from Bristol on a Thursday; assuming you're hiring a car, the smaller the better as the roads are narrow and you wont want to go fast anyway (though it would have been nice to have a hire car with a bit more power for the hills); Funchal is worth two day trips at least - the Blandy's wine lodge is fab and like a working museum; and the 'pirate ship' is a must do - it's a replica sailing ship which will take you out to see the dolphins (90% likely) and along the coast where they stop off for anybody wanting a swim in the clear blue waters. In summary, Madeira is easy to enjoy, very good value, courteous people and very predictable fine weather without being too hot. We will definitely return one day.

Ten days in a superb location!

  • 5 of 5
Probably like so many before us, we had heard so much about Madiera and how nice it was, from friends and relations who had been there on holiday, that we decided it was time that we made the trip and experienced it for ourselves. We were not disappointed. Our 19 year old son and 23 year old daughter came with us and entirely agree with the comments made in this review.
Everything as listed on the Owners Direct website was accurate and we found the Casa da Pedra to be extremely well-kept and exceptionally clean. The beds were among the most comfortable we have ever slept in, really most welcome after a two hour flight delay left us arriving tired and hungry in the early evening. We were also very impressed with the maintenance of the pool during our stay, and with the help given by Ezekiel and Terese. Arco da Calheta is an ideal location on the island, being on the south-facing coast, but far enough away from the much busier tourist and hotel centre of the capital, Funchal. It was also nice to feel that you were living among the "locals", and we frequently used the village shops and small supermarkets. We would certainly recommend hiring a car, (small but with some power, to negotiate the many steep inclines), because you see so much more of the fantastic landscape Madiera has to offer, and can choose your own routes and decide how long you wish to stay in one location.
Highly recommended are any of the "levada" walks, plus those at the two highest peaks, a day in Funchal, and a 2 hour trip we took on a catamaran from the harbour in Funchal, and saw sea turtles, dolphins and whales. Restaurants are generally good and not over-expensive, we really liked the scabberd fish or "espada", a local delicacy.
The flowers in the parks, by the roads, and in the mountains are wonderful, and the many different species never cease to amaze.
Our only disappointment was the visit we made to the Botanical Gardens in Funchal. Parts of it seemed quite neglected, through lack of maintenance/money (?), so not recommended unless it's given a facelift. There is much we have still to see on Madiera, and we hope to return next year. Since returning to England, two friends, having seen our photographs, have already booked an 8 day break and fly out in September.

Casa da Pedra is in the village of Arco da Calheta, situated on the south coast of Madeira, about half an hour’s drive from Funchal. The south coast has the most sun and the least rain on the island. The locals reckon that Arco da Calheta has the best micro-climate of all! It’s a quiet location but in the centre of the village. It is a perfect place for taking your rest between lavada walks

The village is on a hill over-looking the ocean and with views of the surrounding cliffs and mountains. The hill/mountain to the left of the house is famed as an international paragliding place. Check out this site for more information on this exciting sport. www.bhpa.co.uk. There are local shops and cafes within an easy walk. The village boasts a new leisure centre and children's plaly park. The beach and marina at Calheta is a ten minute drive. The marina offers private hire deep sea fishing. There are several restaurants within easy driving distance
