The wonderful thing about the local towns is that they all have their own character with historical centres quite unspoilt by new development. Within 10 minutes is Fasano, a modern town with banks, supermarkets, restaurants and an interesting old centre, Locorotondo, a hilltop town of remarkable circular design with whitewashed houses and a large ‘cantina’ selling excellent local wine, historic Alberobello a UNESCO heritage site and a unique and fascinating place to explore its thousands of trulli. Within 25 minutes is Martina Franca an elegant baroque town, ‘Cisternino famous for its gastronomy, and hilltop Ostuni known as the ‘White City’ as it glows day and night. Nearby is Castellana Grotte famed as the most spectacular limestone caves in Italy, the archaeological ruins of Egnazia, a Graeco-Messapian town and seaport, and a Zoo Safari Park, ideal family fun. A quick 10 minutes takes you to a selection of sandy beaches/coves and 5 minutes to the village bars, restaurants & shop.

General information: Puglia gets close to 300 days sunshine a year with the warm weather starting in April and going right through until the end of October. The hottest months are July and August but with two seas around the area the air does not feel too oppressive during these months, especially as the property is located on a hillside. Spring and autumn is glorious- sunny and warm with wild flowers in abundance. Italians are unashamedly devoted to celebrating everything Italian - religion, food, love... And they show it with festivals, there's almost one a week in the summer, celebrating everything from classical music to grapes. These family orientated events provide great free outdoor entertainment and gives you an insight into the wonderful hospitable Pugliese people. Puglia is something authentic and very Italian, come and find out for yourself and see why more people are recommending it.

Activities: There is no limit to the amount of activities you can do in the region whether you prefer soaking up the sun, shopping, sightseeing or something more active. Beautiful architecture, ancient castles and Baroque churches can be found in all the local towns and eating is an activity in itself as the region is a food and wine lovers paradise - no matter how hard you try it is difficult to eat badly. With over 400 miles of coastline, Puglia has a huge selection of sandy beaches/coves (all of which have blue flag status) and there are plenty of activities for the water sports enthusiasts. If it is golfing you are looking for then Puglia has five major courses to offer. The 5* San Domenica Golf resort and spa near the fishing village of Savelettri, is the closest at only a 10-15 minute drive.

Distances and further information: 35 minutes -Bari Airport 25 minutes - Brindisi Airport. 10 - 15 minutes - Alberobello, Locorotondo, Fasano/Zoo Safari, beaches. 15 -25 minutes- Martina Franca, Ostuni, Polignano al Mare, Castellana Grotte, Casamassima (large shopping centre selling food, clothes etc). Further afield, Matera, a town home to 13th century cave dwelling --'sassi' - used in the film 'The Passion' , many with original cave wall frescoes, is one hour and a half and Lecce, famous for its unique architecture and known as the 'Florence of the South' is an easy hour. PLEASE NOTE there is a no smoking policy at this property. We ask for children to be supervised at all times given the large garden, steps and swimming pool. We recommend that you hire a car to ensure you explore the area and get the most from your Puglia holiday. Car hire available from £16 per day. Great family holiday

claire09 London, England
Review Submitted: October 26, 2009 Date of Stay: September 2009
We had a wonderful time staying at this villa during the first two weeks in October. The weather was a little changeable with a couple of rainy days but on the whole it was hot and sunny during the day and cool in the evenings.

Maura catered very well for our little one (10months old), providing a highchair and travel cot for us at the villa and the large living room was the perfect place for her to crawl around and play which was great. The villa is comfortably furnished and the kitchen has everything (and more) you could need in terms of pots/pans/crockery/cutlery.

We visited all the places recommended in the folder and loved them all - the towns all have beautiful old towns and the surrounding scenary is stunning. We didn't go to the coast much so I can't comment much on that although as did make it there once and found the sea to be a whole lot warming than the villa's swimming pool which we were quite surprised about!

All in all a great break for the three of us, thank you for letting us stay there!

Perfect Getaway

Review Submitted: September 10, 2009 Date of Stay: August 2009
We wanted a nice villa where we could a enjoy a "chill out" week but with interesting sights nearby if we felt the urge to venture out , and we got exactly what we wanted. It was lovely having the various outdoor areas- the dining table with a huge shade which made it usuable all day , the gazebo near the pool which made relaxing by the pool in 40+ degree heat a treat rather than a chore- and all with beautiful views of the Puglian countryside.

A very pleasant surprise were the fantastic Supermarkets within a short drive, particularly the ultra modern air condtioned one on the way to Locorotondo they complimented the lovely local shops in the nearby towns very well.

The local restaurant delivering fantastic fresh pizzas at a very reasonable price was a very nice feature .

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay and would highly recommend this villa to anyone wanting a base from which to see some of Puglia or if you want a quiet break .

Our Italian Adventure

peterpen Somerset
Review Submitted: August 25, 2009 Date of Stay: May 2009
We are now back from our perambulations round Italy and France and I just wanted to let you know how much we enjoyed our stay at Villa Capalu. Your instructions were spot on and your suggestions as to where to visit really helpful - and your comments coincided exactly with our subsequently formed views of our own. The instructions in the villa were comprehensive and comprehensible, the welcome pack was extremely generous. The villa was itself very well equipped - we could not think of anything we lacked - and the pool was lovely (size, position and temperature.

Alan's two visits (when we arrived and the day before we left) were well timed and useful. The cleaning family had assumed we were arriving by air and were a bit surprised by our arrival at 4pm, but they recovered beautifully - a nice family. And Angelo was all that you said he was - we had a memorable meal there with our youngest son and his fiancee, when there was a teenage party with karaoke, in which as buttoned up Brits we were surprised to find ourselves taking part.

All in all, a great pleasure staying at Villa Capalu, which was the highlight of our month long holiday and which we can strongly recommend to our friends

wonderful villa, fabulous location

Bellabella braintree
Review Submitted: July 30, 2009 Date of Stay: June 2009
We knew the holiday would be good before we even got there because of the customer care and attention to detail from the owner right from the onset. We arrived late at night following the detailed directions the owner had provided which took ua right to the door. Our first reaction was how big the property was, how clean and well laid out and how thoughtful of the owners, given that we had arrived at night to provide a generous welcome pack with bread, cheese, wine etc. Next morning we woke up and it was even better in daylight. When we opened the bedroom shutters the view across the valley took our breath away and we saw what a truly beautiful location we were in. When we investigated the rest of the property it just got better and better. The villa was everything that we wanted and more - spacious, clean, private, comfortable, relaxing, well positioned, well planned, great pool, lots of terraces and a beautiful old olive tree right in the middle of the biggest terrace to provide shade when needed.

When we could drag ourselves away from the villa we visited the lovely old towns nearby and sampled the local foods, wine, ice cream (fantastic) and felt we got a taste of 'real Italy'. There is not one particular thing we could say was the highlight, the whole holiday was a highlight and we cannot wait to go back again and explore the area further. We had the best holiday ever and will be recommending it to our family and friends and look forward to returning ourselves next year.

fabulous Holiday

janet101 Stirling
Review Submitted: July 30, 2009 Date of Stay: July 2009
We had an absolutely wonderful holiday, the villa is beautiful and thoughtfully equipped, the area is amazing and we visited all the local villages/towns but only as far as Ostuni. We thought of going farther afield but really why bother? A particular highlight was the beautiful pool which we and the children (aged 4 and 6) could not have enjoyed more. We had the Lonely Planet Guide with us which I don't think did the area justice but the restaurant recommendations were fairly reliable. We particularly enjoyed La Locanda di Zia Rosa in Cisternino (a very informal family run restaurant) and La Cantina in Alberobello (a bit slicker and more commercial/touristy but still very good). For an evening out we loved Cisternino or Martina Franco.

We visited the caves in Castellana (long tour 3km we all coped fine despite being told before hand it was very humid) and though not experts have done similar tours in Mallorca and Lanzarote and the Castellana caves are orders of magnitude better. We also visited the Zoosafari which has a remarkable in the number of rare animals on display (we live next door to a safari park in Stirling so have a comparison) probably better not go into the ethics of it etc. but the children loved it.

There are no negatives at all 5/5. It was hot and there were mosquitoes (which loved me and Ian but not the children) but that is no reflection on the property. We will definitely come back, but try our luck in October, maybe next year?
