Quintessential Art Deco weekend

The Pink house in Margate allowed us to experience our most authentic weekend in England. Located on a residential street the nights were perfectly silent and the smell of the sea and seagulls flying outside the bedroom window were so calming. The bedroom and grand staircase contained furnishings and lamps from The Savoy hotel in London. Three bedrooms upstairs were all so comfortable and surprisingly large. The tub is great with dual toned original tiles bathroom and skylight for musing. We thoroughly enjoyed using the retro kitchen including the grill which made perfect crumpets. All the details were in character from the celadon dishes to the kindly next door neighbor who helped us with directions. The place is really put together with loving care. When one sees Bauhaus English modern houses in books they seem a little austere, but what doesn’t come across is how luxurious and comfortable they are to inhabit.. When you experience space in the drawing room, you are brought back in time to an age of sensible elegance. Sitting by the fire in the evening with the lovely Art Deco mirrors and Bauhaus masterpiece of a fireplace over sherry we almost thought we were expecting the Duke and Duchess of Windsor to “pop round.” The long windows look out on both front and back gardens. Incredible roses, lavender, and iris were in bloom when we visited (June) and the garden was exquisitely manicured. The landlady was a delight to work with and left all kinds of literature about the Shell Grotto which really cannot be missed. We ordered in Chinese and felt like Auntie Mame dining beside our moon gate window. Margate is an absolute quirky paradise, with the grand Walpole Hotel, dance hall, pubs, beachside gardens and the inimitable Mad Hatters Tearoom. Unlike Brighton, which is nice but totally pimped out with yuppie fervor, two days in Margate is not enough to explore this laidback throwback of a seaside town. To us luxury is in detail and the personal touch. The Pink house, if you can book in, is the most de luxe place we stayed anywhere in Europe.
